SuSE 8.2 on new computer - lots of problems

I have installed 8.2 on two machines without any problems. I upgraded my laptop's 8.1 to 8.2 and I did fresh install on my desktop. Recently I bought new machine. It should be dual boot so I installed Win2K first, no surprises. I left 70% space for linux. First when I tried to install from DVD YaST2 hangs on evaluation of packages that need to be installed. OK, I thought, 8.1 got similar problem with DVD setup so I tried boot parameter cdromdevice=hdc. It did not help. The I tried 8.1 and it at least displays error message that it cannot read package selection. No problem I tried to install from CDs. It's possible to install from CD. It was almost without problems but when I tried to do online update at the end it could not connect. I skipped YOU. I finished installation. I booted and I noticed that DHCP client is not working. It turned out that network card is not fucntioning properly. It looks like I got Relatek 8100B which works as 8139 undert Windows and 8139too under Knoppix Live CD Linux. What's wrong? I cannot make it work as rtl8139 or 8139cp too. Does anybody got similar problems with SuSE 8.2? My hardware is Shuttle FX41 mobo with VIA KM266 chipset + Athlon 2000. So I got installed customized kernel for Athlon. It's located in the user's home directory, and it's a hidden file, so if you're looking for it using Kongueror make sure to turn on "Show Hidden Files" in the "View" menu. HELP!

I installed Suse Linux on a spare workstation but now we need that workstation to run a system that requires Windows (i.e. it is not a SPARE workstation anymore!). I Fdisked the hard drive and formatted it, but it still wants to boot up to LILO. How do I get it to boot to MS-DOS? I NEED to put Windows back on this PC. apache2 & comanche questions (newbie)

Hi, I've two probs about apache2 & comanche. I'm not sure if they're related to each other or not.I guess apache server works correctly, since http://localhost retreives me the correct html page. Any help'd be appreciated. Thanks.. System hangs on boot at "Starting sound driver"

HI all! First of all I want to say that I am a newbie to Linux. I installed SuSE on my old Pentium II running at 233mhz with 128 mb ram. I use it as a little personal web server on my adsl internet connection. It also has IMAP running and gets my mail via fetchmail. It has been running without any problems whatsoever for months. Properly 2 months since I last rebooted it. Anyway, this morning I had a problem. I could not get into my mail (which is kept on the server via IMAP - I access it via, ehhhh, Outlook Express - embarrassing.) I logged on to my server via webmin but couldn't see what the problem was, so I decided to reboot the server. Now the server just stops at reboot. The last message on the screen is "Starting sound driver" and that is it. It just doesn't continue from there. Starting via failsafe does exactly the same. Any ideas? I can access the server via webmin but can't do much. Apache won't start, but sendmail will. SuSE 8.0 is installed via FTP download. Please send some suggestions/ideas. Hi from Denmark! PCMCIA/Network problem

This is a continuation of a request for advice from last night. Something seems to have happened to the pcmcia system on my laptop (Toshiba satelite 1905). I installed 8.2 on it with little difficulty. However, while downloading pictures from a smart media card with a pcmcia card reader, the system crashed. Now it will boot if pcmcia is disabled, but will hang if I attempt to start pcmcia either at boot or with rcpcmcia. Also, trying to set up a network card with yast results in a system hang at the 77% point (starting network) after pressing the finish button. The network cards (one wireless and one wired) are built in, but may be on the pcmcia system. After further checking I'm thinking the problem is a hardware failure, but would like to check it a bit further before taking it for repair (which I'm afraid will require reinstalling windows xp...) I would appreciate any trouble shooting suggestions, including how to find the details of what yast is doing when it tries to set up the network card. But if I don't think you have merited your position, I might think it is a rotten answer. As I understand this list, it is a peer support group. There is no division of the helpers and the helped. This is hard when new people come in and don't adhere to issues like threading. But if there is no standard, no one can be accused of failing to conform. Although the link http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html is undoubtedly well meant by both the document and the link authors, I think the tone is so unbearably patronising that it is probably a little counterproductive. On the whole, the idea that people should live their lives on this list in fear of pissing off the person who might answer their question is just plain daft. I have had a lively day on the list recently, but I ain't going to with hold answers from people because of it. If I have pissed someone off and they are not going to help me, that is not a loss, because if I was not on the list, I would neither have enjoyed my lively day nor got an answer anyway. But if they do answer that is all gain! And oh yes, the point of all of this. I think someone /dev/null'ed me. Now I have laid out my philosophy above, I would be grateful to know this explicitly, so I don't spend time answering their questions. In fact, I think that it should be a list standard to name everyone you /dev/null on list. This is a much friendlier rule, because you have to fear that people won't answer your question if you obey it rather than if you ignore it. regards Vince Littler
