Hi everyone We have 8.1 up with a logitech webcam on the end of an astronomical telescope. It works fine with the computer next to the telescope but we want the computer 30 metres away. Is there any way I can do this with usb? Thanks, Steve.

Anders, Thanks, that does seem to work but is not quite what I was looking for. I guess there is not a HowTo that describes using the *.src.rpm and associated spec files. :( I still have a few questions, maybe you can answer them: (for all of the below, I am working with shadow-4.0.2-47.src.rpm) ---- 1) The above ("rpm -ivh; rpm -ba") is apparently missing some dependency checking. At least on my machine rpm -ba is dying because I don't have ldap.h installed. The dependency on openldap2-devel is in the specfile under both "# neededforbuild" and "# usedforbuild". How do I get rpm to test for it? 2) What is the difference between "# neededforbuild" and "# usedforbuild" in the specfile. 3) If I want to create a patch file of my own, do I just create a shadow-4.0.2-greg.dif file and reference it in the specfile? If so, do I create the diff file with a diff -c like a normal patch? 4) While developing my patches, I want to modify the actual source, compile, and install. fonts file error while building rpm???

while building an rpm(s) with (rpm -bb) I get the errors listed below. Strangely enough I don't refer at to the fonts directory. I'm executing "rpm -bb" as ordinary user. How does it come that /usr/sbin/Check is executed for this ordinary user and not just stopped, as in: richard@dar:/usr/tmp> /usr/sbin/Check Check does not work for normal users. Is there a way to prevent these errors?? gnucash dynamic link problem

Trying to get gnucash up and running. SuSE 8.1, KDE 3.1.1, working on the gnucash 1.8 level. After installing (rpm) all the dependencies, when I try to run gnucash, I get the message: ERROR: In procedure dynamic-link: ERROR: file: "libgw-wct", message: "file not found" The files appear to be in /usr/local/lib, but I can't figure it out. Help! (and thanks in advance) Randy

New Mac

Hi, I'm looking for a new computer to replace my P166, and I've been wondering for some time if buying a Mac, and run SuSE for PPC on it, would be a good idea. As far as I understand, Apple has its own flavor of Linux, named Darwin, on top of which OSX runs. Yes I recall their infamous ad 'Send other Unices to /dev/null', once mentioned in this list - I also saw it in the British Linux Magazine lately - thrashing their roots, not being very grateful to the ones they took it from, it seems. AFAICT, Apple was never very good at marketing, and this was another bad move. Anyway, I wonder if it would make sense to install SuSE on it, since Darwin is already there? But could KDE, Gnome or some WM be installed on that? A number of big applications, such as StarOffice or WordPerfect, seem to require the i386 architecture. Does this mean that they could not be run on Linux for PPC? I heard rumours that the only available office application for the Mac is MS Office??? And Internet Exploder is their default browser??? Yes I could have asked this on the SuSE-PPC list, but these questions are probably extremely basic for them, and more interesting for this list I guess, where there might be people considering purchasing a Mac. Hi, Does anybody know of an online reseller to purchase suse 8.2? amazon doesn't ship software to Turkey. Resellers in Turkey doesn't even sell 8.1 yet, AFAIK. I found a few adresses but they're in German, which i don't understand. Thanks..

For work i have to attach to sco box that runs are main work application (tbred). Everything works great except that the arrow keys are not correct. How can i set Konsole to send the charact codes so that it works correctly. I also need to be able to work for the shell in unix. Here backspace del both cause a carrige return. If this is outside the scope of the list please point me where i need to go. Thanks!! Paul Kraus.

I recently set up a Sharp LL-T1820 w/o problems using SAX2. I guess you should try to use XFree86Setup and try to generate the config file using that program. I used it a while back on Redhat 5.x, and it wasn't that difficult but required you to know *exactly* what video card chipset you have. Pop the lid and take a peek just to be sure. I got the same message if I tried to run my monitor at > 1280 X 1024, the native resolution on my flat panel. I entered my vertical and horizontal refresh rates myself instead of using any default settings. Be sure to have these with you when you start. If you drive your tft at the wrong rates, you can hose it for sure. Good luck. Xine in SuSE 8.2

Hi; Just noticed that Xine is in SuSE 8.2. This is a program I've been using since I first came to Linux (SuSE 7.2) and with each SuSE upgrade I've had to download and install it myself. I'll still have to install libcss to watch DVDs but what distro would include that. I've tried mplayer but I always get no sound while playing DVDs, while xine has always worked (to some extent).
