Converting EXT2 to ReiserFS: Recommendations?

I have a 20GB drive (about 32% occupied) that I would like to convert / from EXT2 to ReiserFS. I would like to do an "in place" conversion, if possible, as I don't have a spare partition or drive and backing up the entire / partition externally would be difficult (though possible). I did a Google search and didn't find any recent information (newer than early 2002) that indicated this can be done. Can anyone recommend steps to do this, or something similar. Thanks, Jim

Can't delete a file

Probably a dumb question, but... I had a backup of a lot of directories before installing 9.0. Now I want to get rid of the stuff. I have a directory /oldSuse/root where the file .bash_history -rw------ can't be deleted by root. I also cannot change the permissions. First Sun JDS Review Out

Just thought all of you might like to know that the first review of Sun's new SuSE-based Java Desktop System is out for all to read: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=5286 The article was well written, and I agree with most of the author's criticisms. However, I get the sense that there is an underlying motivation behind such harshness in that I do not believe the author was a SuSE user. For instance, he began to criticise YaST2 as an installation program and compared it with RedHat's Anaconda. When in fact, I believe YaST2 to be a perfectly acceptible installation/configuration package. Let me know what you think. Can not Boot Kernel 2.6 or 2.4.23

I am trying to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.0-test11 and 2.4.23 getting the same error during boot with each. I am not sure if this is a problem with my kernel config file or my grub.conf, but I am inclinded to believe that it is my .config since I copied and modified the kernel name and removed the initrd line. The error that I am receiving is: VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb" or unknown-block(0,0) please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount rood fs on unknown-block(0,0) I have tried some many things, I don't remember what I have and have not. Also, being that I can not mount root, I do not have the ability to tell you with 100% certainty that any device has started. Gnome for SuSE upgrade

While in KDE under SuSE 9.0, I downloaded and installed all the basic files for Gnome from SuSE's ftp site on two computers. After installing them all, I ran SuSEconfig. The configuration hickuped a couple of times. I then rebooted and logged onto Gnome. One desktop was illegible. The other desktop was strangely altered with many of the icons missing. What happened? I am especially concerned about the first one, in which the desktop was illegible. Thanks dj tuchler.

Hardware help

Hi All, I need some help with a SuSE 8.1 installation. I am using it at work (it is so nice to have my machine crash every ten minutes (11 if I am using micro$oft!)) and love it. I tried installing it at home on an H-P Pavillion 6330 model with an AMD K6-2 (300mhz) with 160 mb of ram. I have switched the settings in the BIOS to reflect a unix machine, but it still runs very slow and I am having problems with mouse recognition (very poor on my Logitech 3 button mouseman, serial port and yes, I checked that part of the installation and made sure that I entered the right info) and it doesn't recognize the onboard modem at all. Has anyone had any experience with the Hewlett Packard Pavillion series? Am I screwed? Thanks for the help. ACPI- Fan runs continuosly only in Linux

I have installed SUSE Linux Professional 9.0 and have found that the fan on my Sony Vaio RX-550 runs continously on full strength when the computer is running Linux. I have the computer set up for dual boot to Windows XP and the fan only runs as needed in the Windows environment. I attempted to use the Konsole to access the ACPI setting to turn the fan off while running Linux using the process outlined on page 227 of the "SUSE Linux Administration Guide". When I input the following command: # echo 3 >/proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state the response I receive is that there is "No such file or directory" I have installed all of the ACPI programs and/or files through YaST and still it sounds as if a plane is landing in my office. Sound issue on laptop

Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 9.0 on my Toshiba 5205 laptop. Everything was fine after a bit of tweaking apart from the sound. Whenever is tries to play any sound, the whole system runs very slow and the sound is very 'jerky' and intermitant. The sound card is a 82801CA/CAM AC'97, and YaST is recommending I have the option 'snd_ac97_clock = 0'. I have had to dissable the sound card to make the system usable. YaST appears to have found the correct driver, and I had no issues at all when the laptop was running under 8.2. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks Ged -- -=SuSE Linux 9.0=-
