SuSE 9.0 reproduceable bad behaviour - kdeinit seem to be guilty

Hi, I've recently upgraded from SuSE 8.2 to 9.0 (ftp version) and sometimes when I log in the system freezes. It happends Just after my username/password in kdm and before the kde splash screen appears. When it happends, I can not switch to console (ctrl+alt+f1), I can ping the system from the network but I can not log in (via ssh). But, and this is weird, if I'm already logged in from the network via ssh, the shell continues to work normally. I run top and I see a kdeinit that it spawning continously another kdeinit that quits imidiately. If I kill this kdeinit with kill -9 then the system unfreezes and continue the logging in process (with kde splash screen appearing, etc). How can I reproduce the problem? I simply kill the X with ctrl+alt+backspace and then try to log in with the same username. I think that when I do this there is a kdeinit leftover from the previous session that doesn't die with the X server. What is puzzling me is why I can not log in from the network while the system is in this strange state but any ssh connection already opened works just fine. How can kdeinit which runs as a regular user block all the system such that not even root can do anything than hard-reboot? Thanks, mache

Grinding to a halt

I have been having trouble with SuSE 9.0 and from reading the list so have others. My desktop grinds to a halt with the CPU running at 90 to 100% and frantic paging out to swap. I thought it was a problem with X and ACPI but running top shows that it is kdeinit consuming all the resources. This can go on for 5 minutes with the swap partition filling up and up until it eventually stops. I have not yet found a reproducible situation but it seems to be happening all the time and I cannot get any work done. Any thoughts?? Nick

KDE dead for only one user on multi-user system

I have a very serious (in my mind) and odd problem. I was trying to run an old program (soulride Jay_Peak) and when it went to full screen, everything locked up. I had no keyboard or mouse functions. I was unable to switch to a console. I performed a secure shell login from another machine and started killing processes of that user. Eventually the whole thing locked up hard and I was forced to perform the 0/1 test (reset). The machine came back up fine, until KDE login for the user that was attempting to run soulride. If I attempt to login to KDE I get one of two things, ksplash crashes or it hangs at the first step of KDE initialization (says something about "... interprocess communication" OWTTE). It will stay there for about 10 seconds and then crash. This only happens on one user out of 5 that are on this machine. I have tried deleting the .kde* and .DCOP* files/directories in this users home directory but still no luck. I have also renamed the .xinitrc file to bak.xinitrc but this had no affect either (not that I necessarily thought it would). Has this happened to anyone, and how do you fix it? Gnome also seems to be affected because this particular user cannot log into Gnome either. XFCE4 and FVWM work fine. All other users can log into any of the above mentioned desktop environments without issue. Any hints? Thanks, Darrell

fetchmail and postfix under SuSE-9.0

Where is fetchmail supposed to put emails from the email server? Of course, I expected that the place should be /var/spool/mail/<my_account_name>. But fetchmail in SuSE-9.0 behaves differently `at least in the presence of postfix'. Mails arrived at /var/spool/postfix/*/ Is it normal? Now, I wish to shut-down postfix. I do not think I need postfix. Am I right? I am very much confused with general email handling of SuSE-9.0. Please help. I really need to restore emails from /var/spool/postfix/*/ to /var/spool/mail/<my_account_name>. How can I achieve this task without losing emails. Thanks. Hugh PS: I once again got burnt seriously by an undocument change of SuSE-9.0. Last time, I got burnt by IMAP change of SuSE-8.1. Naturally I am very much upset by these undocumented changes.

Can anyone tell me what the specific path/file is on the installation DVD that starts the setup program for 9.0? I have the DVD copied to a spare HD on my machine that's used for nothing but backup purposes and I'm trying to setup a GRUB option for it but it keeps complaining about whatever file name I use not being valid. Any insight to this would be duly appreciated! Thanks! Zach

Quota question rephrased

Hi, I'm using SuSE 8.2 ; quota-3.08-27 (with quota_v2 enabled at boot) How can I make quotacheck report the correct size of a user's homedrive on samba after he has removed stuff? I 1st turened quotaa off before running quotacheck. TIA Darryl

help! stupid question

I just did an online update of my SuSE8.1, and got a new kernel, from 2.4.21 (old one was 2.4.19). A small window gave this instruction: Please execure /sbin/lilo after installing the update kernel and prior to rebooting. I use GRUB, not LILO, should I execute lilo? And the other thing, how do I execute lilo? I opened a shell konsole and logged in as root using sux, changed directory to sbin and typed in 'sh lilo', but got the error 'cannot execute binary file'. Erratic Mouse Behavior

I am experiencing an issue with erratic mouse behavior in SuSE 9.0 on an IBM TP 600E laptop. I have enabled SCPM on this machine and created three additional profiles, Work, Home, and Away. When I created these profiles, I was using a USB mouse attached to the system. Yesterday, while in the Work profile, I switched to using the laptop's Trackpoint. This was done simply enough in YaST\Hardware\Select Mouse Model by changing from Intelli/Wheel mouse (USB) to PS/2 mouse (Aux-port). I later changed profiles (at a command prompt) to my Home profile. When I got home, I booted the machine, and when I started X, all hell broke loose on my desktop. All sorts of windows and menus were opening. I finally did a Ctrl-Alt-Del to get back to a command prompt. How can I correct this, as I would like to use the mouse at work, but when I'm at Home or commuting (Away), I would prefer to use the ThinkPad's TrackPoint?

Does it exist, in the Install Program, the facility to tell the installer to seek info from another Partition where there is installed the previous, production version of SuSE : Whereas, the Installer will look for result of < mkcloneconfig > & also the database of installed software, on previous install ?? thanks. best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________
