Global CPU usage metrics

Hi folks, I'm running SUSE 9 on a k6-2 with kernel 2.4.21-144. When I run top I get a CPU consumption of ~10%. This is pretty consistent. vmstat reports ~5-7%. UCD-SNMP reports 37-51% and a demo version of OpenView Performance Agent reports similar. The sum of the processes supports the values reported by top and vmstat, so why are the UCD-SNMP and OVPA values so wrong? And why do they seem to agree? Thanks in advance, Dave

Stopping print jobs.

Hi, I can not stop print jobs. I'm using SuSE 8.2 and cups: cer@nimrodel:~> lpq -a Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size active cer 332 (stdin) 26065920 bytes cer@nimrodel:~> lprm 332 cer@nimrodel:~> lpq -a no entries cer@nimrodel:~> So there are no print jobs, but the printer goes on printing. I stop cups: nimrodel:/var/spool/cups # rccups stop Shutting down cupsd done nimrodel:/var/spool/cups # rccups status Checking for cupsd: unused But the printer continues printing. Why!? I see a big file in '/var/spool/cups/tmp' dated now - I forgot to compare its size with the deleted job. I delete it... and printing continues. There is nothing under '/var/spool/lpd' ps afxl|less shows a job: F UID PID PPID PRI NI VSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TTY TIME COMMAND 0 0 9178 1 15 0 2800 652 schedu S ? 0:03 parallel:/dev/lp0 332 cer (stdin) I guess that the culprit must be "/usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel". Why wasn't it stopped when I stopped cups? Perhaps 'lprm' must be used as root? Finally I stop the printer with "kill -9 9178" (the -9 seems to be needed). Then I can restart cups. Peace! Is this a bug? SuSE 8.1 was also unable to stop print jobs (I asked here about it). Certainly stopping a print job should really stop it. To whom can this be reported? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

[9.0] hwclock segmentation fault

From that time, I've since set it back to local, however I've had a hwclock segmentation problem since. I checked suse portal and they had two pages that seemed to offer some help, but hasn't cleared up the problem. If I do an adjust time through KDE or Yast, nothing will change, If I change the time and hit accept, the time sdtays the same. I've deleted /etc/adjtime then run ntpdate ntp2..... This resets the clock imediatley. If I try and run hwclock -(anything) in root, it comes back with a segmentation fault. I am back in local, and when I boot I get the $HWCLOCK segmentation fault every time. I have checked the bios clock and it is correct, also booting back into winxp showed the correct time. The laptop is only 6 months old.. Using supplementary as an installation source in yast2?

SLP 9.0 i386. ftp.suse.com has a supplementary directory for RPMs that are not security or updates. What is the correct path to use in yast2 to collect these packages? I realize they are not supported. I have tried to get yast2 to see them in yast2->Change Source Of Installation->Add->FTP using various directory paths to no avail. For instance using: /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/ /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.0/yast-source I get the following error: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unable to create installation source from UTL 'ftp://ftp.suse.com///pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/ update_for_9.0/'. Details: Error(InstSrc:e_no_instsrc_on_media) Try again? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can some one give me a pointer to the correct path? Do you have to do this for each component (X, KDE, GNOME, GNOME2, etc)? Shouldn't this be somewhere in the SuSE Unofficial FAQ? ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/README.txt was not of help on how to use YAST to accomplish this. TIA. Server solution?

Hiya all! I'm about to set up and configure a server based on SuSE Pro 9 for a customer who's going to run it as the base for a web & mail hosting service. What recommendations can you guys give me on package choices for mail services? SMTP/POP3 is essential, webmail is a strong wish, IMAP isn't at all important. Thank you in advance! reiserfs fails

On 9.0 pro. bootup, reiserfs fails. Knoppix was plopped on top of SuSe . CD is accessable.I could easily reinsatall 9.0 but that might be tacky. No idea how to proceed. Thanks ellie(a)wam.umd.edu

Samba printing help needed

Help: I have spent too much of the past two days trying to set up printing from a win2k machine to a samba server running SuSE 9.0. I can browse shares on the server, even a DVDROM, from the windows machine and have been able to install both printers on the server (a Lexmark E322 on the parallel port and HP psc950 on a USB port) onto the windows machine. They both show "ready" but when I try to print a test page nothing happens (nor have I been able to print from an application). After a few minutes the test page message shows up on the windows machine asking me to check OK or trouble shoot, but nothing happens on the printer. I've also uncommented these lines in the /etc/cups/mime.convs file: application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 - and mime.types file: application/octet-stream that, according to some samba printing information I've found, is supposed to allow printing from windows machines. The error message is the same with both printers. I've tried following the windows trouble shooting guide without success, including attempting to redirect a local printer port to the server printer using the "net use" command. For some reason when I try to do that the windows computer can't find the server printer although I double checked to make sure I'm entering the correct name. (Again, both printers are visible from the windows machine when I browse, or look for them when adding a printer.) I can print to the Lexmark via samba from an old iBook running Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 so samba seems to be set up properly, but I have the same problem printing with the psc950 from the iBook as from the windows machine. Bother printers print fine from the server machine, both test pages and from applications. Any suggestions would be appreciated as my meager knowledge has been exhausted at this point and I've not been able to locate any helpful information in the SuSE support database or through Google.
