USB Modem plug & play?

Hi, before investing on a USB modem I'd like to ask someone here about issues. My system, Thinkpad 600x laptop, runs on Suse's 9.0 Pro edition. Suse was able to detect/configure my current MegaHertz/USR PCMCIA modem. It works well but I cannot get any speed higher than 34 even though it's rated to transfer up to 56. I'd like to switch to a modem with better transfer/compatibility but with the ease of portability. I've noted a few small pocket USB modems, hence my question below. Generally, are USB modems plug and play like most USB devices or do they require additional drivers/configuration? Configuring a Router

I have just installed a Linksys router on my LAN. As I am functionally illiterate with regard to such things (it took me three days and many hours on the telephone to get my Win2000 box working with the router) what is the simplest way for me to get the linux machine on my LAN to communicate with the router? Conecting my Dell Axim X5 User SuSE 9?

I see around people are re-compiling the kernl to allow for Dell Axim Sync Under Linux and some other things.. Anyone know of any built-in functions for me to sync my address-book and such directly through SuSE Pro? The Dell Axim connects via USB and Runs Windows CE 03. any pointers would be appreciated.. SUSE 2.6 Kernel as Soon as Summer 2004?

SuSE 9 Pro Loaded -- Some Questions?

I have successfully loaded SuSE 9 Pro on my notebook. I have been toying with the 82801DB AC'97 internal modem. Using the Hardware app brings up lots of information about the modem and dialup is set to use pppo. But ... no actual dialing is going on. It says it is using irq5 but Driver -- Modules -- Active says "No", and Modprobe says "Yes" and "modprobe slamrmo" Help? I use Limewire Pro but have been very unhappy with number of hits it gives me in comparison to KaZaa. I wanted to explore using "kmldonkey" and I found out that there is almost zero documentation for it. It asks for a username and telnet password during configuration and I don't want to setup something that requires the use of telnet on my machine. Does this really require telnet or is it just an ascii protocol? Does anyone know what are the normal holes (port/protocol) to punch in your firewall? What do you uses as a server? Does it autodiscover peers? Thanks for any information. I sure can't find any and google is my friend. To enable telnet server on Win2000 Server net start tlntsvr or Go to Computer Management->Services and Applications->Services. Telnet is listed and defaults to manual startup. No fuss no muss. * * * While I'm on the subject of Linux on laptops I would like to point out that anyone running Linux on a laptop has different needs than someone running Linux on a desktop or a server. For instance when have you ever seen a desktop or server that needed PCMCIA? Yet every major distribution installs it whether the machine needs it or not. Another thing about PCMCIA is that every distribution wants to start the network *before* starting PCMCIA. On a laptop, it should be the other way a round. While it is true most laptops have built-in Ethernet adapters now, including my Dell Latitude, it is almost never used. What is used, however, is the wireless adapter and even though it is internal it is still PCMCIA. On my laptops I have changed the startup order for PCMCIA so it starts before the network service. This simple thing ensures that I get an IP-address from a DHCP server every time I turn on my computer. It does not matter whether I am at home, at work or in a hotel with wireless access. I always get an IP address and I don't have to mess around with creating profiles. It just works. This is such a simple thing but not one distribution does it by default. BTW I am really beginning to become annoyed with SuSeconfig. Every time I run YAST2 or YOU it changes the startup order of the services in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d back to the SuSe defaults. Completely, ignoring what *I* need. SuSe is not alone in ignoring laptop users. None of the distributions I have used have a package group and default configuration designed specifically for laptops. According to industry experts Laptops/Portable computing devices with wireless networks access are going to become the predominate computer used by 2006. (It already is in my home. I have two laptops with wireless connections and my wife's desktop is wireless.) The first Linux distributor to provide a package selection and configuration specifically designed for laptops will be way ahead of the game. Problems with real player

Hello. I am having some issues with real player and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix it. First I'm running 8.1 prof on a sony viao lap top. The problem is that when I go to use real player, either by just pulling it up from the desktop or going to a website (like amazon) and clicking on an audio link and start real player form there. Real player then starts up and begins to connect (if it was brought from something like amazon..) and sometimes it even starts to play a the clip then it freezes (just real player) I can't close it or anything, I have to restart to actually close it. Any ideas on a solution? TIA!

Shadow in my monitor graphics

Hi to all, I have a problem with my screen. I use KDE as my GUI and the windows appear with a shadow in all the screen. What i mean by a shadow is like several lines (more like shadows) which appear in the horizontal direction and appear in the windows edges. There are also other shadows which appear in each line of text that i am writing. When i move the window the shadows follow it . Perhaps this is a X server problem, or it might be a hardware problem (monitor or graphics card). I have plugged the monitor in another computer and the shadows did not appeared, so i presume this is not a monitor problem. I have run the X wizard to reconfigure the X but it remained the same. Is this a graphics card problem ? I do i trace the problem ? Thanks to all in advance. P.S: sorry about my english

cgi world readable

Hi all, I have just installed SuSE 9.0 with Apache 2 and realised that cgi can only be executed with permission set to at least 705. But my ISP server, with Apache 1.3.3, can execute cgi with permission 701. How can I configure the system to work just like my ISP? BTW, is 701 more secure than 705? Thanks a lot and happy new year.

Moved from 8.1 to 9.0 - now I miss some things !!

Here is a *short* list of things that I loved in 8.1, but seem to disappear with new 9.0. I did my best trying to recreate the functionalities I got used to in older versions, but without success. 1. Konqueror (and some other stuff) used to "change colour" when started by root user. E.g normal colour of scroll bars was blue, but if I switch user to root, than they were yellow. Q: Can I do it in 9.0, and how? 2. KDE Keyboard Tool (the tiny flag icon sitting in the panel) configuration had an option to assign my Win key to switch to alternative group, and my Scroll Lock LED to show the alternative group being active. This was by far the best use of Win keys and Scroll Lock LED one could imagine - I use frequently both cyrillic and latin part of TTF fonts, so this setting was of great help for fast switching between the two alphabets. Now in 9.0 this seems to be broken. The options are still there (right click on flag icon / configure / options ...), but when I set the options as in I used to 8.1, nothing happens. Has anyone managed to get tv_grab_uk from the funktronics perl-xmltv package to work? For me it seems to ingnore the "--configure" switch and complains about: Parameterless "use IO" deprecated at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.1/ XML/Writer.pm line 16 cannot find /share/xmltv/tv_grab_uk_rt/channel_ids, xmltv was not installed correctly. I installed perl-xmltv using apt-get install. geoff

Hi all... After making a multi-session CD I do a "df -h" to see how much mb is used up it only shows the size of the last session. It must be something with K3B because this happens on two different machines. Any ideas what is wrong? Updating GIMP

I've been having memory problems with my SuSE 8.2 version of Gimp ( v1.2.3) and wanted to upgrade it to the new 1.3. When I tried to run the upgrade with Synaptic it wanted to uninstall all the Scanner stuff (Sane, XSane, KdeScanner) in order to install Gimp 1.3 Anyone know if it is OK to install Gimp without the removing the scanner stuff? gcc problem - libtool: compile: unable to infer tagged configuration

I'm trying to use rpmbuild on lame.3.94b. If I run a manual make command. It compiles without a problem. However, if I try using the spec file I get a libtool error: libtool: compile: unable to infer tagged configuration The scrit contains the following line: make CC="gcc3" CFLAGS="${CC_OPTS}" test and if I understand correctly CC_OPTS is defined as: %ifarch athlon export CC_OPTS="-O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strength-reduce -mcpu=athlon -march=athlon -malign-functions=4 -funroll-loops -fexpensive-optimizations -fschedule-insns2 -Wall -mfancy-math-387 -pipe" Does anyone understand the error and can point me in the right direction towards fixing it? You should have given your exact partition table descriptions, but guessing at them I would suggest: grub-install /dev/hda This assumes you do not have a /boot partition on /dev/hda, if you do the command would be: grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/hda (It also assumes you have a valid /boot/grub/device.map, if not you need to look into the option --recheck) grub has a VERY complete info document. (So complete I cannot really blame you for not wading through it to find the answer:-)

Samsung ML1710 laser problems

I recently bought the Samsung ML1710 Laser Printer. It says on the box is supports Linux, and the docs state SUSE is a supported distro. It's a USB only printer. Here's what happens. It detects the printer. CUPS doesn't have the ML-1710 ppd file, so I downloaded the version of CUPS samsung has on its web site, untar the file and copy the ml1710.ppd file to my local system. I then point the CUPS util to the ppd file. I'm using SUSE 8.2 Pro with CUPS 1.1.18. The printer comes with CUPS 1.1.15 onl the CD. YAST shows the printer with the proper description, and show the location of printer as "SB printer on //Unknown?serial=2261BAAW916952V0" When I use the test functions, or try to print to the printer, it doesn't do anything. The file doesn's show up in the printer queue. So, anyone have any idea about this? Thanks, Mark
