SuSE 9 Install glitch

Hi All, I decided to go with just one distro of Linux since I was pulling my hair out trying to get them to boot anyway. Anyway, I decided to switch the drives around (80 gig is now master with XP Home and the 160 gig is slave with win98se/SuSE). Now grub will boot XP (it wouldn't when XP was on the slaved disk) but now it won't boot SuSE. I decided to reinstall SuSE so it would be sure to point towards a slaved disk. During the install it is suppose to reboot and continue. Grub shows up, SuSE is chosen, screen goes blank, computer boots again. Any ideas why? Dell 4600 3ghz 80gig (set as master not cs) and a 160 (set as slave not cs). I tried them both on cs and it did the same thing anyway. Thanks Russ

Let's start with the basics, some of which I haven't seen mentioned yet. This way we can figure out which options can be used... What network card is the NIC? 3Com model ??? Without that we can't say WHICH of several modules is to be queried. Try in shell: mii-diag and mii-tool Might shed a little more light on the problem. This is the output from one of my servers: hp:~ # mii-diag Using the default interface 'eth0'. Basic registers of MII PHY #24: 3100 786d 2000 5c01 01e1 0021 0000 0000. Basic mode control register 0x3100: Auto-negotiation enabled. You have link beat, and everything is working OK. Your link partner is generating 10baseT link beat (no autonegotiation). End of basic transceiver information. You have new mail in /var/mail/root hp:~ # mii-tool eth0: no autonegotiation, 10baseT-HD, link ok The 10baseT is obvious as to its meaning. The HD is half duplex. FD is full duplex, which is not a common use... I'm rather wondering if the card might be in full duplex mode with the switch/hub being half duplex... Or possibly a bad cable termination? Showing Directory structure

Hi, I'm trying to get a list of the directory structure of something and could use some help. I went to man ls and saw that -R gives me Recursive, but that gives me every file within every directory on the tree. Doing ls -lhR Directory/ > file.txt gave me a text file with all the top level directory names in alphabetical order, then all the files within each directory, then all sub-level directory names in alphabetical order, then all their files ... I want to generate a list of the directory tree without listing the files within the folders. I also would like the listing to show a directory immediately followed by its subdirectories, NOT a list of all top level directory names alphabetically, followed by the first level sub directories alphabetically, etc. Example: A ->Aa ->Ab ->Ac B ->Ba ->Bb ->Bc C ->Ca ->Cb ->Cc Thanks, and sorry if this is a thoroughly mind-numbingly basic operation. eth0 ..DHCP...No IP Address yet ...backgrounding.....

The above is the message I receive from my SuSE 8.2 installation on boot! My limited network comprises ADSL usb modem connected to old Pentium II machine which is set up as a Firewall using Smoothwall 1.0.9. This is correctly configured as DHCP & DNS server. My client "main" computer is an Athlon 2400XP configured as a dual boot system with Winblows XP on a 120GB hard disc and SuSE Linux 8.2 on a 40GB hard disc. I am using GRUB as the boot loader. Winblows XP has no problem getting an IP address through its DHCP client but, no matter what I have tried so far - manual configuring of nic, disabling of acpi and pnp (various combinations) in the bios, manually editing bootloader with "acpi=off", editing DHCPCD - I cannot get IP address. The nic & the motherboard on my client machine "main" are both nVidia and I have the latest drivers installed. I am currently running the 2.4 kernel. BIOS is fully up to date. I have been able to configure the client machine "main" to connect to the internet directly via the ADSL but this is no good to me as Winblows is so security flawed that my system got hijacked - even with their "excellent" (not) firewall. So I am keen to keep the network setup as it currently is. The principal error message is as in title: eth0 ..DHCP...No IP Address yet ...backgrounding.....which even with use of ifup(or)down(or)config(or)status remains the same. Log shows DHCPCD as running but eth0 as not running. The only other message I have received is when I switched acpi off and this was eth0...(DHCOP)...dhcpcd[447]...no IP address yet.... backgrounding. I have been unable to ping either way when running SuSE 8.2 absolutely no problem using Winblows. Can anyone help with this please as after 6 months of struggling I am at a loss and have scoured many forums but to no avail!! Regards Humvee

doing an apt update in SuSE 9.0

Dear List, I have SuSE 9.0 installed. On doing apt 'update', from the console, when the process starts, I get some 'protest beep' sounds, and the screen characters are jumbled and corrupted for a few lines. Then it settles down, and 'update' proceeds OK with legible screen characters. Another symptom that all is not quite right : a Reverse Search, Ctrl 'R', looking for a recent console command, does not work properly. ~ thinking that it may be a "bash" problem, I have re-installed 'bash' but these strange behaviours continue. On this same PC, I have SuSE 8.0 on another Partition ~ I am not having these problems with SuSE 8.0 Any ideas, please, what could be the problems in SuSE 9.0 ? thanks. ____________ sent on Linux ____________

cannot detect isa usr modem

I have a US Robotics ISA modem that I tested in a Suse 8.0 machine, it works fine. when I install it in an 8.2 machine, yast2 does not detect it. when I run: echo "ATDT4572622" >/dev/modem it seizes the phone line, gets dial tone, does not dial, then disconnects after about 2 seconds. This leads me to believe that the device/com port setting is correct. My object is to use this machine on the internet, but I cannot connect. thoughts? -- John Sowden American Sentry Systems.
