USB printer disappears? when turned off.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I've had on two different HP printers using USB with CUPS (SuSE 8.0). It has only happened a couple of times and on different computers (one at the office, the other at home). Under certain circumstances (yet to be ascertained) when a printer is turned off and then back on, the printer will not accept a print job. I suppect that it is something to do with the USB hotplug utility which reassigns the USB device number somehow and /dev/usb/lp0 does not point to the correct USB device number anymore. The only solution I have found to solve the problem is to reboot the computer. I cannot find any information on how printers operate via USB and the hotplug utility or am I looking in the wrong area. KDM disappeared

Red-Hat -> SuSE rpms

Hello, Because SuSE it seems no hurry in updating some rpms, I'm trying to convert RedHat rpms sources to SuSE. I mean small packages as vorbis-tools. My question is: How can I extract rpm spec file from a src.rpm without installing it? The basic idea, I don't know whether it can run, is to reuse SUSE source rpm spec files with new 'updated_source.tar.gz' and then recompile a new rpm 'ala SuSE' Thanks. Sharp Zaurus :-(

Hi! Since I received my Zaurus a few weeks ago, I have been unable to make it synch it prpoerly with my laptop either under Windos XP or SuSE 8.0. I've once been able to transfer to it my contact list from M$ Outlook XP, but this was sheer luck ... No joy since! I read a lot on the web about 'how-to', I received some advice from this list. But still no joy. It looks as if there is a lot to be done (and not always the same things, depending on what you read!) before it will eventually work. I'am sure it is GREAT when it works, but I'm so frustrated ... Ideally I would like to be able to synch it with M$ Outlook XP in one (unfortunate) hand and the KDE family on the other (better) one ... Is there somewhere some 'instructions for use' or proper 'how-to' I could blindly (..) follow to make it work, including the dependencies, as it seeems there is always something missing? The USB drivers seem to be the trouble either with Windows or Linux. Still a long, long way before it becomes as 'easy-to install' 'easy-to-operate' as a Palm ... What a pity! TIA Lao Toma PS: I think there is a SuSE-KDE list? where can I get the complete list of SuSE users/support lists in order to subscribe to some more?

Splitting tar and tgz files

Is there a way to split a tar or gzipped tar file into several files, to be rejoined later on another hard drive? For example, given file.tgz which is 10 MB in size, is there a way I could divide it into 10 files, each of which fits on a 1.44 MB diskette (called file-1 ...file-10), to be rejoined later into the original 10 MB file? Where is swing.jar

I'm trying to run Genj (a genealogy prog) but it is muttering about not finding swing.jar. True enough I can't find it with "locate". I have a standard SuSE 8.0 professional install and /usr/lib/java points to SunJava1-1.1.8. I cannot find any mention of it under the Yast install software search option. Any clues where to find swing.jar anybody? Is it lurking inside a different java rpm? -- Geoff Horn U.K

Has anyone tried this Linux from Redmond? There is a very laudatory review of it, in terms of ease of installation and use, on line (Linux Today). How does it stack up against SuSE or RedHat or Mandrake? djtuchler

Hi, Just a quick question. I've got my TTF in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/ I can preview them with Font Installer but kde 3.0.3 doesn't pick them up for some strange reason. Is there a workaround to set it up, or this is yet another "feature" ?? Cheers P

SuSE7.2pro,512mb ram, ati all-in-wonder128, 32mb video, xfree86version-wouldn't dare to guess [8-0 perhaps I should call it 4.2.#&%@??? Short description of problem... Tried to install newer Xfree86 packages from SuSE (supplementary, not experimental...), The install failed, now yast, kpackage and rpm all refuse to let me make any changes to my system including removal or re-installation of rpm's. If I try to install the kernel source (2.4.16-32) it shows a missing dependency as well (lx_suse). this is really odd because it just let me install this source 2 weeks ago. I am totally frustrated, I just want to write really bad things about SuSE Linux right now, but I'd rather get the problem fixed. I think I had a similar problem about 4 or 5 months ago and ended up using the Winders method of solving problems -re-install- I DON'T want to do that again. I get 85 fps at 1600X1200 resolution full screen with Geforece 2 Go on Dell inspiron 8100.
