Linux DNS versus Win2k DNS

A couple of us at work have convinced our IT guy to look at Linux for the DNS server. We have, unfortunately, at Win2k network with 1 server for DNS, 1 for Microsoft Exchange, 1 for IIS webserver, Oracle 8i database server, and 3 file servers. At one time we had exchange and DNS on the same server and it would crash regularly, usually about once a week. Exchange was put on another server by itself, now either exchange or the DNS crashes every 2 to 3 weeks. For awhile, the DNS was crashing every week. You could access some websites on the internet, but not all. Question is, can you run linux server with both DNS and a mail service, or Apache webserver on one machine and not have the problems that Win2K does with this type setup? We are a small company with 7 servers and about 50 clients. Art

Connecting Linux to Win2k

Hello all, I need some help in getting my Linux box connecting to my Win2000 box. I have downloaded Samba 2.0 from www.samba.org ? is there an instructional steps that I could follow, or if you have written up installation/configuration of samba could you please send it my way. I know there is other releases of samba do they work on Suse Linux 7.2, and what other programs I might need to download to get this working? swat utility where can I find that, if it's on my CD's what is the name of the file? As you can see I'm not an admin. so please detail instructions or directions, and thanks for your help. Thanks, ~mn

my SuSE 7.3 is ruined because of glibc2.2 from arkeia

I am dying now because of arkeia. At the beginning I just wanted to use backup tape to backup my important data at SuSE 7.3 server. But now it give big problem. I was using arkeia 4.2.7 it didn't run and than I asked the technical support of arkeia and they told the problem because I was using an old version arkeia according to the mismatched glibc. So I installed arkeia 4.2.10 and glibc2.2 . Now each time I restart my server machine, the machine does that very slowly because it always doing "Another Nlservd is already running. Restarting it ...". And it does too many time either while it's shutting or it's starting up. How can I repair this problem ? Which script should I edit to do this repairing ? Palm m505 sync.

Digital Prioris - PCI not found - AIC-7870 not detected

I'm re-deploying a server Digital Prioris XL 5100 that was previously running Open Sewer. There was a minor hiccup in reconfiguring the Mylex DAC960 PDU array and the server needed it's EISA reconfig'd. Unfortunately, that somehow resulted in the floppy not being usable when the embedded AIC-7870 was set up to load its BIOS (for booting). It'd basically thrash away with seek errors. So I stripped out all the ISA and PCI cards and exercised SCU half a zillion times. Now, I finally have the AIC-7870's BIOS and the floppy working again but SuSE 7.3 installation still doesn't detect the controller. What's the magic incantation? Surely it can be made to work. 7.3 v. 8.0 dual boot

I just bought 7.3 Personal a few weeks ago and now 8.0 is out. I'm thinking about dual booting my desktop and my biggest question is the new Yast -- since 8.0 advertises co-habitation with Windows, I was wondering what the 7.3 install would be on a Win ME system (gee, wonder why I would want to try linux??). Or, should I just go get 8.0 (which makes me unhappy since I just bought 7.3 -- talk about timing!) TIA

TTF Fonts in 8.0

Ok.....I put all my fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF and ran SuSEconfig. This, of course, USED to make all of them available, now it doesn't! Anyone know how to get 8.0 to use them? Thanks! Win2k runs chkdsk after haveing been in Suse 8.0

I have Dell Inspiron 8100 dual boot system with Win2K on FAT32 and Suse 8.0. After booting into Suse and accessing the Win2K partician, not even writing to it, then rebooting into Win2K, Win2K runs chkdsk every time. Any explanation for this strange behavior? Art Fpre

can't mount CD with SuSE 8.0

Hi All, Just installed 8.0. on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop, and it has recognized my IDE CDRW, which is good, since 7.3 was unable to, but when I click on the CD icon on the KDE desktop, I get the error message: Could not mount device. The reported error was: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem and none was specified. One difference from the 7.3 install is, this time, instead of only one icon appearing on the KDE, there are two icons appearing on the Desktop for the same drive. In addition to the aforementioned CD ROM icon, there is also an icon labelled: CD-R. When I click on this one, I get the same message, only instead of reporting the error as /dev/cdrom: input/output, it reports it as /dev/cdrecorder: Input/output. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I am a beginner, so if you can help, overexplaining will not be possible. thank you Neal McDermott
