Kernel Upgrade...Should I?

I've been running 7.3pro since it came out and have had little to no problems. I noticed a new kernel was out and I'm thinking of upgrading. Should I? I've never compiled a kernel so I have no idea how to do it. Is it a pain? Can someone either give me an "idiot's guide to kernel upgrading" or a link that gives a step-by-step? Thanks, Tom

backing up your partition table--reminder

Hi, As you read on this list, someone lost their partition table due to the virus called Microsoft Windows. Even if you don't have a dualboot, do yourself a favor and backup your partition table. Just do this: fdisk -l /dev/hda >>mytable.txt (or whatever disks you have) and write it to a floppy or handcopy it to a piece of paper. Question concerning APM and Laptop

Can someone also define the difference between suspend and standby, cause for what I've read about suspend mode, I should have used a dos partition so it could suspend to disk, but I've only got Linux running on this laptop. In the general setup of the kernel config I've activated following kernel options: [*] Power Management support <*> Advanced Power Management BIOS support [ ] Ignore USER SUSPEND [*] Enable PM at boot time [ ] Make CPU Idle calls when idle [*] Enable console blanking using APM [ ] RTC stores time in GMT [ ] Allow interrupts during APM BIOS calls [ ] Use real mode APM BIOS call to power off Maybe these settings are wrong. I don't know for sure since normally I left my laptop connected to the powerline without putting it to sleep. But now I need it on the road. hda lost interrupt??

Hi: I got this message from syslogd: Feb 4 17:47:26 gato kernel: hda: lost interrupt It always happens after I authenticate with gdm.. I am starting to believe that something is interfering with my harddrive.. After authenticating with gdm I am suppose to get KDE, but sometimes it hangs and sometimes it doesnt... Still trying trial & error to see what it is .. Any ideas?? Thanks, Raul

unreadable fonts in the KDE konsole

Hi, The fonts in my KDE Konsole are unreadable, I found reference to it on the SuSE support database (a snippet is below) and followed the directions but it did not fix the problem. Has any one seen this and fixed the problem? Cause The package freetype2 has been compiled without the so-called byte code interpreter function to prevent any infringement of patent rights. Solution Use YOU (YaST Online Update) to update the package from our FTP server: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/7.3/gra1/freetype2-2.0.4-52.i386.rpm or install it via rpm -Uvh PACKAGE-NAME.

Erattic mouse movement in SuSE7.3 Professional

I bought myself SuSE 7.3 Professional. I love it, but I have a small problem. I have a Microsoft Intellieye optical mouse. It is an USB mouse, but you get a PS/2 adapter with it. Ok now for my problems. 1. If I use the mouse as an USB mouse it works perfectly (I.E. no erattic movement). The only problem is that the mouse 'dies' on me after some time (this can be anything from 1 minute into X or 10 hours). I have no idea on how to reactivate the mouse on the USB port, and thus have to reboot my machine. 2. When I use the mouse on the PS/2 port, I just cannot get it to move correctly. It jumps to the corners of the screen and runs commands by it self. I must have configured XF86Config about 100 times with different protocols and device settings etc. I will apreciate it if anybody could help me get this sorted out. P.S. Modules Error

I have that error: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/modules.dep Is it serious? I think it appears because I was playing with kernel compilation. Thank You, Martin.
