more odd behavior - KDE desktop icons disappearing

OK, methinks it is time to do yet another re-install of SuSE7.3. I have a new problem. The icons on my desktop disappear. I can lauch apps from Kikker, but anything that sits on the desktop is dead. The only recovery I have found so far is to log out and back in again. Any other ideas? Cause? It is almost as if KFM was choking on me.... I hate to give up (reinstall) and not learn why this is happening. C.

configuring network card for multiple IPs ?

I'm an experienced Linux user, but I just can't find the "SuSE-approved" way to configure my Ethernet card to listen for multiple IP addresses. Can anyone tell me how, or provide a pointer to the documentation (paper or online) ? I hate to throw in random ifconfigs into rc.local. I'm running SuSE 7.1 Professional on Intel. Daryl

This post is mainly about SuSE having some great information but not making it easily accessible. I have had a pet project to get chinese input running on SuSE for sometime. I have been searching the SuSE site on and off for over a year and have never found any useful information. Yesterday I found a link in google which lead me to: http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/ Which is a brilliant document on getting asian character input to work in SuSE by Mike Fabian. This answered all my questions. The next link in my google search lead me to another SuSE link: http://lists.suse.com/archive/m17n/2001-Nov/ This is a link to a SuSE mailing list called m17n which I had never heard of before nor seen on the website. Now this mailing list is only 3 months old but there is no mention of it on either suse.com or suse.de. The archived posts that I read were very helpful. Here is a mailing list that will help me. I find it strange that SuSE is producing such good documentation but not making it available. Does anyone remember that Lenz wrote a document on how to make your own rpms? How easy do you think that will be to find if a) you don't know that it was Lenz that wrote the document or b) you don't know the document exists but are looking for help. I spent 10 minutes on www.suse.de/en looking and I couldn't find it. This makes me wonder: what other great documentation have SuSE's people created that we can't access unless we know about it first? (or are lucky with google?). Just some thoughts, Jethro Cramp

Failure in installation of SuSe 7.3 into Laptop

Since my first massage earlier during the week I have been encouraged to come back with more detailed information. Here it is: My LTE5100 is a laptop with HD and FD in the "notebook part" and CDROM in a "docking unit". Processor: Intel/Pentium 90 MHz. RAM: 24576 kbyte. Graphic: Cirrus Logic cipset, 1M video RAM. Ethernet interface in "docking unit". (Yes, I am aware of that this is an old equipment with poor performance. However I use it in my network for simple tasks and I very much wish to have the same Linux installation in all my equipment...). I have successfully installed Suse 7.3 into other desktop and laptop PCs but do not succeed in installing into my COMPAQ LTE5100 laptop. Installing SuSe 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16-22) and RedHat 7.1 (kernel 2.4.2-2), via FD+CDROM, works without any problem. I have to start installation from FD and then continue via CDROM. When starting without any kernel parameter the process stops with error message: 'CPU#0: Machine Check Exemption: 0x 10D4C8 (type 0x 9)' This is overcome by using kernel parameter 'boot: linux nomce' on the command line. Then installation goes on with FD accesses for 10-15 minutes (loading initrd, loading linux) until the CDROM is accessed (YaST starts). Instal- lation i other PCs (FD access) takes in the order of a minute. I then select minimal or default installation. For some packages the fol- lowing message is presented on the screen: 'unpacking of archive failed in /usr/... cpio: read failed Bad file descriptor'. Looking into the "crtl-F4 screen' there are messages like: . . VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev fd(2,0) hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } hdc: ATAPI reset complete . . I then tried with kernel parameter: 'boot: manual nomce ide=nodma'. The installation terminates with messages like: '...unpacking of archive failed...'. "Alt-F4 terminal" shows: . . modeprobe: Can't locate module nls_cp437 modeprobe: Can't locate module nls__iso8859-1 . . I then tried: 'boot: linux nomce disableapic pci=conf2'. "Alt-F4 terminal": Startup Non-volatile memory driver V1.1 VFS: Can't find a Minix or Minix V2 filesystem on device 02:00 VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev fd (2,0) Dec 4 .... syslogd 1.4.1: restart Adding swap: 257000k swapspace (priority -1) Adding swap: 257000k swapspace (priority -2) Adding swap: 257000k swapspace (priority -3) Adding swap: 257000k swapspace (priority -4) hdc: cdrom_decode_status: status=0x51 hdc: cdrom_decode_status: error=0x30 . . . There were a lot of warnings on the normal display (Alt-F1) but the installation could be completed. I was able to log in as root. Ping to localhost was possible. When I restarted (shutdown -r now) there were a lot of failure reports during start-up before I could logon again. I then reconfigured my PC: - Disconnected the "notebook part" from the "docking equipment". - Removed the FD from the "notebook" and replaced it with the CDROM device (the "notebook" now only contains HD and CDROM). - MS-DOS with support for CDROM access is installed in HD. - The laptop is powered on and MS-DOS in HD is started. - Prompt is changed to CDROM (d:). - SuSE setup is started on CDROM (setup.exe). The installation starts and I input all the information I have been ad- vised to use ('manual nomce...pci=conf2'). Postfix and mailman

Hi all, I am trying to use mailman with postfix. I recompiled mailman as described in /usr/share/doc/packages/mailman/README.SuSE by using: --with-cgi-gid=$NOGROUPGID --with-mail-gid=$NOGROUPGID $NOGROUPGID expands to "nogroup" (gid 65534). Now, I get the following error from mailman wrapper when I try to test: WANTED gid 65534, GOT gid 28. (Reconfigure to take 28?) Where gid 28 is "mdom". Did I miss anything here? Replacing the SuSE routing&networking scripts with iproute2

Hi, Looks like after long hours of fight I think I have solved my problems with Ethernet's and SuSEFirewall 5.1. The question is how much trouble I am looking into if I start playing with iproute2 and replacing all the other old routing/networking related scripts, I know it is probably hell of a work yet just wondering :-). Some fresh install annoyances

I did a complete wipe and rebuild of my computer yesterday. This included a major hardware shuffle to rid my system of that annoying DNS/DriveSeek error. That worked, but now I have new problems that i ave never had before with SuSE7.3 (or any other release for that matter) 1. Mounting vfat drives. This has worked very smoothly in the past. Now when I try to mount/view a vfat drive using Konqueror, Konqueror starts up and does a websearch for ListDir, then returns the error message, Unsupported action ListDir. A second attempt at using Konq. to open the /windows/D drive gives this error: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: /devhdb5 already mounted or /windows/D busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/hdb5 is already mounted on /windows/D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= OK.. that's nice, the drive is already mounted. I can unmount the drive using umount /dev/hdb5 and I am back where I started. Manual mount seems to work fine... I can switch to root, type mount /dev/hdb5 /windows/D and browse the drive from a Terminal window fine. If I attempt to use Konq. after am manual mount I get the same error messages. This is new... any ideas what went wrong here? This is usually something that is a no-brainer... unfortuantely I seem to have no brain when it comes to figuring this out. 2. KMail refuses to save an option. I like using threaded messages in KMail. Makes reading the SuSE list so much easier. I set KMail up to use threaded messsages in all folders. When I start KMail, it remembers this setting for all folders except the Inbox and the SuSE List folders. I have to reset these manually to Threaded. To top it off, while KMail is running it will periodically forget the Threaded setting - the scenario is kind of like this.... Startup Kmail, set Threading on to SuSE List and Inbox, view SuSE List folder, click on Inbox, read a couple messages, click back on SuSE List and threading is off. Click back to Inbox, and threading is off there too. Click to other folders, and threading is on. Got me puzzled. Any idea what finger problems I mght be having? Later C.
