Sorry for the cross post All of a sudden my root password doesn't work. Looks like I've been hacked (though the last time I ran YOU was three weeks ago) it's a Firewall/Web system with ports 80,22,postgres open. Kernel panic has me panicked, help

Last two days I have had the following kernel panic twice. Prior to this I have never had a problem. The first time I had the problem I was running YOU and while retrieving the update list the server crashed. I have also included log snippets pertaining to the problem. Top output not adding up.

Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. Piping dd and tar AND gzip

I am copying an image with dd if=/dev/hdc1 of=/image Now, I would like to pipe this in order to get this image tgz'ed in ONE task. appending | tar -cz does not work. Evolution HOWTO

So.... what was the final solution to get Evolution going, anyway? I installed the latest SuSE GNOME updates from the FTP server, and that made GNOME 1.4 mostly functional. However, I can't get Evolution to work, since there seem to be some missing libraries. -ronc

Invalid sync freq. after running X

Hello, I have just recently done a fresh install of SuSE Professional 7.3. I had a running system that crashed hard (harddrive failure), and I had to replace it. With my old system, the screen would blank after a period of inactivity. The monitor would show a short error message "Invalid sync." and then shutdown into standby mode. This was ok, and I figure this is how it is supposed to work. With the new system, I get the same behavior as with the old, providing I haven't had any X sessions. If I have had an X session, the console blanks, and the monitor issues its "Invalid sync." message. Then it shows the message "Invalid scan freq." while showing wavy horizontal lines interspersed with an occasional wide greenish band going up the screen. The monitor does not go into standby mode. When I move the mouse (gpm is running) or type a character, the console returns to normal, and the monitor briefly displays the frequencies 38kHz/60kHz. Could this behavior have something to do with the "vga=" line in /etc/lilo.conf? The old system had "vga = normal". This freshly installed system has "vga = 788" in it, I assume by default. Could it have something to do with APIC? The entry for the default kernel, which I have been booted into when this happens, shows the line: 'append = "enableapic vga=0x0314 hdb=ide-scsi"'. The monitor is a 19" Cornerstone Color 45/101sf with horizontal scan rates from 31 to 101kHz and vertical scan rates from 50 to 160kHz. The sync on this monitor is Separate, H, V or composite H/v TTL level, or Sync on Green at 0.3 V p. (I am guessing this last explains the green bands.) Regards, Sean -- Theo. **** imagine; all of everything that is or was, can be reduced to an equation less than one inch long ! *** Okay , getting completely and thoroughly discusted w/ verio , we have gone so far as to contact bellSouth .. who , of course , tell us, they "do not support linux" and wont even send us the modem unless we have windows something on the box.. <heavy sigh> I still have a windows partition I can fudge a bit for purposes of this experiment <g> tho husband is seriously worried that w/o support we wont be able to use it .. I can't imagine why, if anyone did support an OS I was currently using , I'd have to see what was further out on the bleeding edge<g> Anyway, any users of Bell South in particular , or DSL generally care to share ? headaches , heartbreaks , willingness to suggest answers to tech support type questions .. ??? I suspect that i am merely stupid and that this is the reason i cannot figure out how to do an online update to the latest KDE release. It is my assumption that i need to provide a directory string at ftp.suse.com, but can't for the life of me figurre out what it is. Although i can find the files, yast2 can't, and i never seem to be able to download the right files in the right order to just run the rpm's myself. For the sake of my crumbling self-esteem, can someone please help me. bc

Windows emulator for Linux

Hi What would be a good win-98 emulator for Linux? Is it vmware of win4lin? I have tried the vmware that comes with SuSE, but I found it to be quite slow what comes to screen handling. Reason is that my spouse wants to go to Linux, but one bookkeeping software and banking software needs win-98. We are also ready to pay for this sw... Jaska.
