[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Dell 2650/Perc3 Raid Controller easy switch??

I am currently using a Dell 2650 Poweredge server without a raid controller. It's using the standard adaptec onboard SCSI as it stands. I'm wondering if anyone has installed the Perc3 raid controller and had the Linux install just pop right up (assuming the megaraid module was loading)? I wouldn't need to reformat if all I was doing was switching controllers and hardware mirroring, right? Thanks, Rich shado(a)mc.net

Can't find audio cd

Having this problem on two different machines, both runnig 8.0. A different 7.1 installation has no problem. Xmms and Grip both do not find any files in /cdrom with an audio CD in the tray. Permissions on /cdrom, and the devices pointed to are identical between the machine where the audio CD is found, and machines where they are not. Unfortunately, I can't use the 7.1 machine for the sound editing work I need to do. Suggestions? TIA. Greetings! I'm thinking about getting an APC Back-UPS CS 350VA USB to automatically shutdown my small file/DSL/firewall server (AOpen micro-ATX motherboard, Cyrix M2-333Mhz, 128MB, 10GB IDE hard drive, SCSI cdrom drive, and no monitor). Does anyone have any experience with this particular UPS? Does the stock SuSE 7.3 kernel support a USB UPS or do I have to hack and patch the kernel to make it work? Recommend a similar model with serial support for under $100 USD? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Samba Server And Suse 8.0 Setup.

Hello I have basically a suse samba server setup. Eth0 is for the internet connection (cable). Eth1 is my internal network. I use eth1 for my samba server. When i have the shares/ drive letters mapped, whatever, Ill goto access them and that computer will just lockup or timeout for about 1 minute, then it will resume operation normally. I have approx. 5 comptuers on the suse server, and they all do this from windows xp to windows 98se. I am using set up addresses of 192.168.0.x, where is greater than 2. My question is have or is there something Ive setup wrong to cause this pause to occur. ? Its becomming very annoying..and frustrating. Im using kernel 2.4.18-64GB-SMP with a dual processor setup. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Every package installed is orginal versions from the suse install cdroms. (no updates done). Anything come to mind. btw, ive replaced the switch, with a new netgear one, and all the networks at startech ST100 Realtek 8139 chipsets on 100Tx. Anyone... !

how to mount a vfat filesystem with mod 777 ?

Imagine the following situation: - computer 1 has linux running and there is a vfat partition mounted - computer 1 is running samba on that vfat partition (i.e. the vfat partition is a share of samba) - computer 2 wants to have write acces on the samba share The problem is, that computer 2 has no write acces, because the vfat partition is mounted 755. The samba.conf file is the following: [public] comment = Schreibbares Verzeichnis path=/home/sure/netzwerk/public public=yes readonly=no browseable=yes create mask=777 How can I make the partition mounted as mod 777 ? Top output not adding up.

Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. Evolution HOWTO

So.... what was the final solution to get Evolution going, anyway? I installed the latest SuSE GNOME updates from the FTP server, and that made GNOME 1.4 mostly functional. However, I can't get Evolution to work, since there seem to be some missing libraries. -ronc

Invalid sync freq. after running X

Hello, I have just recently done a fresh install of SuSE Professional 7.3. I had a running system that crashed hard (harddrive failure), and I had to replace it. With my old system, the screen would blank after a period of inactivity. The monitor would show a short error message "Invalid sync." and then shutdown into standby mode. This was ok, and I figure this is how it is supposed to work. With the new system, I get the same behavior as with the old, providing I haven't had any X sessions. If I have had an X session, the console blanks, and the monitor issues its "Invalid sync." message. Then it shows the message "Invalid scan freq." while showing wavy horizontal lines interspersed with an occasional wide greenish band going up the screen. The monitor does not go into standby mode. When I move the mouse (gpm is running) or type a character, the console returns to normal, and the monitor briefly displays the frequencies 38kHz/60kHz. Could this behavior have something to do with the "vga=" line in /etc/lilo.conf? The old system had "vga = normal". This freshly installed system has "vga = 788" in it, I assume by default. Could it have something to do with APIC? The entry for the default kernel, which I have been booted into when this happens, shows the line: 'append = "enableapic vga=0x0314 hdb=ide-scsi"'. The monitor is a 19" Cornerstone Color 45/101sf with horizontal scan rates from 31 to 101kHz and vertical scan rates from 50 to 160kHz. I suspect that i am merely stupid and that this is the reason i cannot figure out how to do an online update to the latest KDE release. It is my assumption that i need to provide a directory string at ftp.suse.com, but can't for the life of me figurre out what it is. Although i can find the files, yast2 can't, and i never seem to be able to download the right files in the right order to just run the rpm's myself. Hi What would be a good win-98 emulator for Linux? Is it vmware of win4lin? I have tried the vmware that comes with SuSE, but I found it to be quite slow what comes to screen handling. [SLE] problems with KVM switches.. losing mouse control on 8.0

I am using a multiple servers with a KVM switch and I find that I lose control of my mouse as I return back to the SUSE 8.0 KDE. Are any you experiencing the same thing. I have tried other mice and different KVM switches. -I am using a Belkin KVM switch with hot key functionality for changing monitors. -I am using PS/2 mice The only way I can stablize the mouse is if I return to YAST 2 and try to re-configure the mouse when it is a problem... Otherwise I have been rebooting to get the mouse stability.

Converting Albums to MP3

Hi All, I want to convert my record collection MP3 and I am looking for a way to do it. Somewhere in my memory is a program that will record what comes into the sound card and indentify the pauses between songs and separate them into individual WAV files. Once in WAV, the conversion to MP3 is pretty easy. However, it is this first step that has me stumped. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreaciated. Regards, jimmo

Version 8.0 installation from hard drive with YaST2 possible?

"No installation data found on medium" "Could not mount the source medium" Previously I was alawya able to use the orginal YaST to do hard drive installation, I was never able to get YaST2 past the above errors, if I exit YaST2 and start YaST everything works fine. It has always been this way for me and I didn't mind as I like using YaST. However, I am told that version 8.0 will no longer have YaST. Does anyone know if version 8.0 of SuSE pro will allow paying customers the right to copy the installation disks to their hard drive and do a complete installtion and further updates directly from the hard drive? If I have been skipping something, please let me know, it has been a while since I installed 7.3 my curent SuSe distro installation disks are on my /hda11/7.3 thanks in advacne joe

I'm learning to use CSS with html (anything to try and make an ugly webpage look better) and I can't get it to work. At this stage I'm not sure if it's a problem with apache (which I know next to nothing about) or my html/css. I'm running vanilla apache as it came with SuSE 7.3. I have checked the style by substituting the <link ...> tag with the <STYLE> definition and it works. Hi all, I have just tried to access my USB 250 Zip drive in SUSE 7.3 Pro, only to receive the following message: "Could not mount device. The reported error was mount /dev/sda4: unknown device." I have checked and ziptool is installed, I have a Zip icon on my desktop, but obviously, something needs to be configured somewhere. I read /usr/share/doc/packages/ziptool/README, but there wasn't any help as far as I could decipher. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

I'm planning to give the Reiser FS a run-in (or should that be ruin?) and I have a few questions I'd be grateful to get advice on: 1) Is the reiser support in 7.2 (2.4.4-4GB) safe? I'm not intending to upgrade my kernel anytime soon. 2) How does it get set up in /etc/fstab? Is it just a matter of changing ext2 to reiserfs? 3) What's this I hear about tail and notail modes? Hmm. New 7.3 system. I set the permissions to secure, if that has any bearing. cron-3.0.1-406 Logged in as root I try to create a new crontab: # crontab -e and get the following expected message before vi starts: no crontab for root - using an empty one I create the following entry: 30 8 * * * (tab) date When I exit vi I get the following message crontab: no changes made to crontab and a crontab -l shows nothing. I've tried with the default deny, allow files and no deny, allow files. Setting root crontab works fine on my other 7.3 system. I'm stumped. Ideas? Brett

Linux Format issues 19, 20, & 22 all had info on mounting USB digital cameras as a storage device, but I'm still having problems. Reboot

This is something I have not been able to find much info on so far - maybe I am searching on the wrong keywords... anyway.... I am using SuSE7.3, vanilla full install. When I want to reboot the system, I logout, and click the Shutdown button. That presents me two options - Shutdown or Reboot. To the right of Reboot is a dropdown box. In previous versions of SuSE Linux I could click that dropdown and select one of my LILO options such as WinNT or SuSE Safe mode. Well now in 7.3 that box is still there, but there is nothing in it. I cannot pre-select how I want the system to restart... I have to wait and pick it from the boot menu after the BIOS has doen it's thing. What option have I missed (messed with?) to empty this menu out? How can I enable it or fill it back up with the LILO options? C.

Annoying Konqueror lock-ups

Hi, When I use Konqueror as a file manager, on opening certain directories it will freeze with rapidly flickering patterns where the horizontal and vertical scroll bars should go. It's a reproducible problem with certain directories, but I've not yet established a firm cause and effect relationship with what part of the directory's content is producing the effect (although I suspect it may be related to image files). I'm running Suse 7.3 on an 800MHz Athlon with an nvidia geforce 2mx. I've had the problem since installation, and it has survived upgrading from KDE 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 (and to the latest 2.2.2 builds on ftp.suse), from nvidia drivers 1251 to 2313, from kernel 2.4.10 to 2.4.16. (I'm not sure if the problem survived the change to qt2.3.2, as that slowed everything down so much that I changed straight back to 2.3.1) Has anyone else had (and solved) this problem? Cheers Mark

How to set up a HP 930C?

I have just reinstalled my main server system, and have grave problems installing the printer. It is a HP 930C connected to the LAN through a D-Link DP-101 printserver (plugged onto the printer itself). I remember that my first SuSE Linux 7.3 installation on this system also gave me problems in this area, but somehow I got over them. Now I have struggled for a couple of days, and that is somewhat more than I expect to use for a "simple" job as setting up a printer. The printer and the printserver work, which can be confirmed by printing from other nodes on the LAN. Furthermore, when I try setting up the printer through YaST2 the test pages - both color and text - print out just fine. When I get around to use the printer after the setup, nothing happens. I have seen a patched apsfilter package which I have installed. Otherwise I have updated the system with YOU. I have backups from the previous installation, and I have tried moving all the relevant files to their libraries, but this plan didn't work either - same result. The problem is that I don't get any output from the printer. With some settings (adjusted from YaST2) the printer takes in a sheet of paper, but then the job dies. With other settings, the job dies instantly. When I do 'lpq' right after sending a job, I get a message about the job being removed. That is, the job got removed in the same moment it got issued. What should I be looking for? I have run out of ideas. Best regards, David List

.has anyone ever used ghost for linuxbefore. Norton Ghost is supposed to support Linux products.ext2 filetype to be exact. So I take my hard drive of my current machine called A and put it another harddrive in it called B: then I start ghost and look for a disk to disk copy and it tells me there is not a valid source disk in the machine. What is the correct process to take a ghosted image file or to copy a hard drive, the Symantec help site is no help and I cant find it anywhere else.

After a reset and log as single I have manage to recover the firewall file and the message file.. now I have also remount the system with remount rw , / now I can used it again .. but I still can't figure out what happend... I used reiserfs as my filesystem now how do I ask reiserfs to fix my drive so next time I reboot I will not have to manualy set it to rw I can include a the log file from my system Please need help badly..... How to see what is IN dump files?

Hi all, Some time ago I created a backup of root filesystem with dump. Then my hard drive broke out, but I decided to do a full reinstall with update. All I want now is to read just one or two files in the old files created with dump. How is it possible?? Praise

Toshiba Techra 8000 and Xircom network card

All, I'm trying to set up SuSe Linux 7.3 on a Toshiba Techra 8000 and a Xircom RealPort Cardbus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56. I've gone through the standard installation (Default + Office). I've had problems in the past and am again having problems with my Xircom card recognizing the network. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this and would have any helpful tips getting me up and running. Thanks, Jon.
