Dual boot...

...I am preparing to do a dual boot machine with my laptop. I have read before that you need to install windows first on the hard drive to get the partitions to work correctly. Then install linux on cylendar 1024 . Then configure LILO to boot with the option of picking the partition to use. I have a few questions... 1. Do you need to boot with a floppy when you do this, why would it just read the lilo booter, unless you put it on the MBR sector of the hard drive. 2. Is there a place I can go to get reallly good directions for this, or do you all know a place or how to do this? Thanks, Mike

Intel C++

Has anyone managed to get Intel C++ working on SuSE linux? I have 7.3 professional, a trial license and the compiler is running fine. However, it won't compile anything. It fails with a bunch of errors, about its include files. I have the license file installed. I've run the iccvars.sh script to set the environment. So if you have got it working, what did you do? Dual boot on dual drives...

My main drive is NTSF and I can't partition it because w2k is already loaded and I don't want to format and start over since it's my work computer. My next option is to install Suse on a second hard drive and dual boot. My question is: 1) Am I correct to assume that I can install Linux on a second (or D:) drive? 2) How can I dual boot? Will installation place the lilo on my primary drive or do I have to use a boot disk? 3) Won't a boot disk slow down the linux system? Thanks to all for the help. Remote CD mounting

Hello, Is it possible for the windows boxes on our home LAN to mount and unmount the CD-Rom drive on our server......as in clicking a desktop icon? OR does it hurt to keep a CD mounted for extended periods? (as this would achieve the same thing, sort of ) I don't want to have to mount and unmount any CD's at the server, every time. The CD drive is accessable though Samba and Net Neighborhood. Oh, and yes, of course, the server is running SuSE. Multiple CRON instances

Guys- Whats up with all the instances of CRON that fireup when sysstat is installed? Im familiar with this on other distros, and they dont fire off 4-5 instances, also.. Lots of defunct cron processes throughout the day also. This is 7.3 I see there is a cron update from the website but haven't installed it yet as it doesn't address this problem. The FAQ is not what one would think. It isn't a FAQ that represents the contents of the various topics discussed on this list but rather a FAQ about how to use the list. I'm not sure about the archives either. I clicked on January and there were 64 messages. In February, 8 messages. That doesn't seem right. It would be nice if the archives could be searched and if they truly represented the contents of the email list. The archive appears to be broke, too. I have worked with other lists that provide email keyword search commands. This would be a nice feature to help folks. I did see the email this morning on the unofficial SUSE FAQ. Thanks for asking that question. I'll add, I sometimes visit the Slackware and/or Redhat sites to find information. These sites are very user-friendly --- well organized, books ("Official Guide to Using..., help, etc. I like the SuSe distribution, but I like the other web sites for knowledge. I wish SuSe would take notice and improve their web site, which in turn will help their customers. Well, I'm SUPPOSED to be using DHCP, so I'll check as soon as I get home that dhcpcd is being invoked. Thanks. Every little suggestion helps. sound not quite right

Suse 7.3 pro. I have a dell optiplex gx400 with a built in sound card. It detected my sound card and indeed plays.. however the sound is off. It sounds like a 33 rpm record played at 78. ((Boy I just realized how much I dated myself). The autodetection says I have a 82820 Camino 2 chipset with the AC 97 audio controller. When I play a cd, the sound is right. It just happens off when it is a mp3 or wav. or mpeg. Thanks for the help. -- Dr. Roy F.
