Re[2]: [SLE] Netiquette - (was: Geneology software for Linux)
Hi, I went back and reread the "subscription" notice and 2 items popped up that I thought would be useful but turned out not to be.
From subscription notice: Q4. How can I retrieve the FAQ? A4. Send an email to suse-multimedia-e-faq@suse.com
Q6. Are there archives of the list? A6. Yes, http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-multimedia-e/ Currently, they are not searchable. The FAQ is not what one would think. It isn't a FAQ that represents the contents of the various topics discussed on this list but rather a FAQ about how to use the list. I'm not sure about the archives either. I clicked on January and there were 64 messages. In February, 8 messages. That doesn't seem right. It would be nice if the archives could be searched and if they truly represented the contents of the email list. The archive appears to be broke, too. I have worked with other lists that provide email keyword search commands. This would be a nice feature to help folks. I did see the email this morning on the unofficial SUSE FAQ. Thanks for asking that question. I'll add, I sometimes visit the Slackware and/or Redhat sites to find information. These sites are very user-friendly --- well organized, books ("Official Guide to Using..., help, etc. I like the SuSe distribution, but I like the other web sites for knowledge. I wish SuSe would take notice and improve their web site, which in turn will help their customers. Hi All,
I'm a little confused by this ...
a) SuExec is designed to protect running cgi.
b) Therefore SuExec's DocRoute should be /usr/local/httpd/cgi-bin ?
So why is it /usr/local/httpd/htdocs on the SuSE compiled version of Apache?
Have I misunderstood somewhere?
I guess its back to the custom compiled Apache for me ...

I know this was discussed once on this list not to long ago but I didn't pay as much attention to it as I should have. I want to install OpenOffice but can't figure out how to install it so that it installs one time and then each user can create their own "mini installations" for their individual accounts. I tried installing as root but couldn't create the account installations. Any suggestions are appreciated. Zach Coming to you live from SuSE Linux

Use sux, not su. sux is "su but with permissions to run X programs" regards Anders

I guess I don't understand the question, but I had a preview of the StarOffice 6.0 system at LinuxWorld, NY, a couple of days ago, and it blew my mind. It is really a full-fledged word processor and spread sheet. If it performs like the demo, there is no reason for anyone to use MS Word or even Corel WP. (I like WP in Windows, altho I liked version 5.1 better.) The new SO will not take over your GUI, it will be available as an app, like everything else. SO is a really neat system. They say it will be available in April or May. I did not ask if it will be free, all I asked for was a copy, but I didn't get one. --doug
You may not be able to get the beta of SO 6.0 anymore from sun.com but if anyone wants the same thing they can go to openoffice.org and get build 641c of OpenOffice..it's the samething..actually it's a newer build :) OpenOffice = StarOffice like Mozilla = Netscape if that clears it up a bit. :) * Doug McGarrett (dougmack@i-2000.com) [020203 17:01]: ->At 15:01 02/03/2002 -0800, Ragnar Steingrimsson wrote: ->>On Sun, 3 Feb 2002, Zach Smith wrote: ->> ->> ->>> I want to install OpenOffice but ->> ->>The following describes installing StarOffice 6.0beta, perhaps OpenOffice ->>maintains the same system... ->> ->>First: ->>chmod u+x so-6_0-beta-bin-linux-<language>.bin ->> ->>Then for the network installation (as root): ->>./so-6_0-beta-bin-linux-<language>.bin -net ->> ->>Then as user you can activate the setup as it is explained in the setup ->>document from Sun (setup_guideeng.pdf). ->> ->>-- ->>Ragnar Steingrimsson | Department of Cognitive Sciences ->>UC-Irvine, SSPA 3151 | Email: ragnar@uci.edu ->>Irvine, CA 92697 | Small Green Men ->> -> ->I guess I don't understand the question, but I had a preview of the StarOffice ->6.0 system at LinuxWorld, NY, a couple of days ago, and it blew my mind. ->It is ->really a full-fledged word processor and spread sheet. I think Philip may be on to something here - I've had a similar problem in SuSE 7.2 where OpenOffice installs fine on some installations, but on occassions where I have re-installed SuSE, it simply refuses to start, giving nothing useful at the command line. I found out what appears to be one of the dumbest bugs ever: If you have kicker or a task list on either side, as opposed to the top or bottom (I'm a Step guy), OpenOffice will not install or start. a) SuExec is designed to protect running cgi. b) Therefore SuExec's DocRoute should be /usr/local/httpd/cgi-bin ?
So why is it /usr/local/httpd/htdocs on the SuSE compiled version of Apache? Have I misunderstood somewhere?
I think that suexec just checks that the user and group of the cgi script, matches the homedir that it's being called in. It dosn't neccessarily put the cgi script in a chrooted protected directory. It also is compiled in Suse to make sure that the cgi script is in /home/user/public_html, you have to recompile it if you want something different. Maybe cgiwrap is what you are looking for? It's an alternative.
