I have oo641c installed and running just fine - huge improvement over so5.2. I suspect you had a bad download. Try it again.
I think Philip may be on to something here - I've had a similar problem in SuSE 7.2 where OpenOffice installs fine on some installations, but on occassions where I have re-installed SuSE, it simply refuses to start, giving nothing useful at the command line.
I found out what appears to be one of the dumbest bugs ever: If you have kicker or a task list on either side, as opposed to the top or bottom (I'm a Step guy), OpenOffice will not install or start. It just stops without a decent error message.
I had a lot of fun figuring that out...
