Suse 8 and HP 4300c usb scanner

Dear All, I am new to Suse 8 and liking it so far. I , also, use Linux Mandrake 9. Anyway, I had my unsupported scanner working with LM9 very nicely using the niash patch for sane. There was a special procedure to get this working for LM 9 and it finally worked very well. Now, I would like to get this working with Suse 8 and so far no luck since there are some differences between LM 9 and Suse 8. I am sure it would work in Suse 8, however, I am not sure exactly what I need to do. Is anyone using this scanner with Suse sucessfully using the niash testtool ? If anyone could help me step by step I would appreciate it greatly. The testtool and information come from this link: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hp3300backend/. Alternative XF86Configs

I need two different XF86Config files on my SuSE8.1 box - one for normal desktop use and one for games. This is because, with my GeForce2 card, the NVidia drivers don't let me go above 1280x1024 on the desktop, but the nv drivers (which let me use 1600x1200) don't support 3D. How can I switch easily between the two XF86Config files involved? Is it possible to set the file to be used when logging in graphically (e.g. having two different users)? If not, how do I drop out of the graphical login tool to log in without starting X, so I can start it manually with the relevant config file. Help me, problem with configure shell script

I have SuSE Linux 7.3 version and I don't manage to install Rdesktop source code. After the configure command line. " ./configure" it prints this message: # ./configure bash: ./configure: bad interpreter: No such file or directory Why? How can I solve this problem?

emacs php customization

Hi guys! I'm trying to get PHP syntax highlighting for GNU-emacs 21.1.1 (SuSE 8.0) to work. I found some html stuff and was able to get it to work. But if I have a file *.php it doesnt work. I found some html-helper-mode (via 10000 links on GNU.ORG) that supposingly gets php highlights also, but I can't get it to work... Anybody have any ideas/suggestions/tips? Thanks!!! Later HG

SuSE8.1 crash??

Ok, this is starting to make a bit nervous... I just had SuSE8.1 take a major dive on me... got me a little concerned since this is the second time this has happened. Both times it has crashed I was writing to a floppy. This time I was in the process of manually creating a GRUB boot rescue floppy (I have loaned out my SuSE8.1 master disks to a friend who wants to give Linux a try so I cannot use YaST to do it all the easy way, and my second computer had to have Win98 re-installed...thus the need for a GRUB boot floppy to get back into Linux on that machine). I popped a new floppy into the drive and typed: fdformat /dev/fd0 Which worked as expected... then I typed: mke2fs /dev/fd0 A couple of clicks on the floppy drive and poof, the whole system comes to a screaming halt. Monitor goes black, the HD light is on steady, and no response to keyboard, or the hard reset button. I had to pull the power cable to restart the machine. The first time this happened, I was reading a file from the floppy drive and same exact results... a system crash. How do I install a .src.rpm?

Keyboard repeat rate slowing by itself...

I'm having an "odd" problem with SuSE 8.1; kde 3.0.x; [pretty much a "default" installation] -- my keyboard "repeat rate" is slowing down [and eventually stops] if I keep my system "up" for several days -- is there any known cause for this? I set my keyboard parms to be the shortest delay before repeating, and the fastest repeat rate [30cps, which isn't fast enough for my tastes, but that's beside the point] However, after the system has been "up" for more than a day, the "repeat rate" appears to have slowed [mostly noted on the "backspace" key and/or arrows] After a few days, I'll notice that the repeat rate has stopped entirely. Note that by "up" I also mean "logged in" -- I live alone, so I leave my session running 24x7 -- I generally don't have to worry about people coming in and using my system "as me". Could it be the keyboard itself? [this is the one with the "word-for-dos" or "word for windows v2.0" keyboard template glued to it, so it's one with "feel" rather than a cheesy new one from dell/h-paq/gateway/you-name-it...] As I write this, however, I'm finding it seems to be the arrow keys more so than regular keys -- here I've held the 'x' key for 5 seconds: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx but holding down an arrow key for 5 seconds only goes this far xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx this is rather annoying [and very tiring to the fingers -- as if carpul tunnel wasn't bad enough...]
