Hi James, How are you going about trying to configure your JerDirect boxes? We use them extensively at my place of work and configuration is accomplished via a simple telnet session to the box, no Windows based software is required. Someone, somewhere out there must know how to configure printers on a multi-port JetDirect box?

installing kernel patches

Hi all, I'm new to linux, only 2 weeks, and I need a little help with updating the kernel. I am running 8.0 on a i686 machine and I have a few questions. My current kernel version is 2.4.18 and I thought I would have a bash at updating to 2.4.20. I used the following commands: cd /usr/src gunzip -c 'patchfile' | patch -p0 everything seemed to go to plan and I verified that for rejected portions using 'find /usr/src/linux -follow -name "*.rej" -print now if I enter the command 'uname -a' I get the following reply : Linux linux 2.4.18-64GB-SMP #1 SMP Wed Mar 27 13:58:12 UTC 2002 i686 unknown However, if I give the command 'linux/scripts/patch-kernel' I get this : 'Current kernel version is 2.4.19' What is actually happeneing here? if I navigate to /usr/src, my symbolic link points to a folder named linux-2.4.18 Also, assuming what I did was correct (which I am not entierly sure of) I tried to repeat this procedure with patchlevel 20. Now I get the following response which has caught me out: linux:/usr/src/linux # gzip -cd /home/****/patch-2.4.20.gz | patch -p0 can't find file to patch at input line 4 Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option? Path .. how do I?

Could someone tell me please as in steps 1,2 and 3 how do I assign a program to be recognised from outside of its own directory. I've downloaded Phoenix .5 [very good] but I would like to have Suse know where it is so that all other programmes can recognise it. TIA Steve

I have gotten this to work in the past. Did you look at the Web Jetadmin program? http://www.hp.com/pond/wja/live/manual/html/wjacomp_linux.html There are both Linux and Windows flavors of it. I have gotten that to work in both environments to be able to detect and configure any JetDirect device I have ever plugged in. Unfortunately, I have never been able to get the Print Queue Creation to work on Linux. I had to resort to manually doing that part. It is very handy for configuring IP addresses and updating firmware. It will automatically detect any JetDirect devices on your network. One feature we use is the page count. You can set page counts on all of the devices manually. Good for keeping tabs on the duty cycle of the printers. Also, I've had occasion to have to keep track of how many pages we were getting out of some third-party toner cartridges. Here is some documentation on configuring JetDirect print servers. It has instructions on how to use arp & telnet as the tools to do the basic initial configuration of the JetDirect as well as instructions on how to set up a print queue to use printers attached to it. http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj02836.html By the way, if anyone has gotten WebJetAdmin to be able to manage print queues on Linux servers, I would appreciate any pointers. OpenGL on ATI Rage 128 Pro (SuSE 8.0)?

Is this supposed to work by setting it from YaST? Or do I have to do some manual stuff, which is fine, but I want to know beforehand if it's really needed, because it would be a shame to mess it all up unnecessarily. Tried checking the box "3D Acceleration" in YaST, yet it's still disabled next time I run YaST. Thank you for your help.
