Yes, I have a backup and reiserfsck works fine to get back to 90% of where you were before. It's just that you never seem to be able to get back to 100% of where you were before without staying up all night. We though someone may have cracked it before reiser 4.0 :-( -------------------------------------------------------

Problems with Synaptic .24 - Doesn't work anymore

I'm running Synaptic .24 and just the other day I tried running it and got the message below. Prior to that I had tried to download a file to install and had some type of error about not being able to complete the download because of some file problem. Anyway, when I start Synaptic, it takes a rather long time to load then I get the message below. **************** could not open RPM package list file /var/state/apt/lists/ftp.gwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_opt_Suse_8.0-i386_base_pkglist.ximian: Problem opening /var/state/apt/lists/ftp.fwdg.de_pub_linux_suse_apt_Suse_8.0-i386_base_pkglist.ximian The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. **************** I don't seem to have either file in the above directory. stoopid question: Kernel Update in 8.1 ??

Hi, Never tried this before with 8.1, but today I dared installing k_athlon-2.4.19-185.i586.rpm from /people/mantel. Before, in the old versions, it was done that way; rpm -Uvh, then mk_initrd, then lilo, then reboot. All right. Now, we have grub. So, running lilo is no longer necessary. So I just rpm -Uvh'ed the new kernel. mk_initrd was automatically run right after this. So far this seemed to work nicely. But then, after the reboot, no login screen when the machine normally switches from console 1 to console 7 - just a blackout. I now booted into 'safe settings', logged in as root, and went to init 5, which now does work. Did I forget something? Or is there something wrong with the -185 build? Problems with SuSE 8.1 and cups

Hallo, I installed a canon remote printer with the help of the http://localhost:631 page in my browser, after starting cups manually with the command /etc/rc.d/cups start as root. The test page of the localhost:631 was printed perfectly. Now my problems: 1. Where can I place a command or change a variable in order to start cupsd during the boot procedure automatically ? In former SuSE's there was a configuratioin file variable to be adapted, which I cannot find anymore. 2. When trying to print a little file with kwrite a message comes up "error ocurred while retrieving the printer list. The ipp request failed for unknown reason". The same happens btw., if I open the control center and then try to call the printer manager. 3. The printer manager from StarOffice don't offer the new installed "remote printer" queue from cups. Can somebody please tell me what is happening and what should I do ? BTW: cups ( 1.1.14 ) , Staroffice, kwrite and others are working perfectly in my "linux-from-the-scratch" installation. Evolution won't start

I'm running SuSE Pro 8.1, and GNOME starts properly. But in either GNOME or KDE (I use KDE as my WM), when I go to start Evolution, I get a dialog that says "Cannot initialize the Ximian Evolution shell: Configuration Database not found", and if started from a terminal, I am also treated to an error message that reads "evolution-shell-WARNING **: Cannot access Bonobo/ConfigDatabase on wombat: (IDL:OAF/GeneralError:1.0)". What have I done to deserve this? touchpad and usb mouse

I have a toshiba laptop (SuSE 8.1) that is working very nicely (ACPI excepted). The touchpad was my 'mouse' until I decided to plug in a USB mouse. The USB mouse now works very well, but I am unable to use the touchpad. I presume that this is in the XF86Config file somewhere but I am unsure as to what the settings should be for a touchpad. If possible could I use both, plugging in the USB mouse when I need it and using the touchpad when 'in transit' ?? Many thanks Pete

Hi , I didn't need to compile anything into the default kernel shipped with 8.1. The only change needed was the upgrading of the firmware from Netgear ... The screen shots of the Yast2 options, I'll send you for entering the encryption string. Reg'ds Dre :)

Unloading USB modules before PCMCIA

I use a cardbus USB2 adapter to access a USB2 HDD (for backups and archiving) when in the office. Using SuSE 8.1, when shutting down without unloading the modules ehci-hcd and ohci-hcd, the shutdown process hangs when shutting down pcmcia. I tried adding the rmmod lines to halt.local, but these are called too late. Where can I add the rmmod lines to automatically unload the USB modules? Or am I going about this the wrong way? S3 Harware Accel on Toshiba Tecra 8100

How does one enable hardware (3D) acceleration on the S3 Savage MX/IX chip in this machine? I think I read somewhere that this was not supported in the new version of XFree - is this correct? The SDB article applies to 7.0 and isn't any help. Is there a work around?
