Dear All, I downloaded a static binary chess game that I used to play on Linux Mandrake and I cannot get it to open on Suse 8. Everytime I try to run it I get an error message that the program cannot be found. I made it executable as according to directions. It uses the qt libraries. Any help will be appreciated. PROBLEM - gcc 3.2x segfault with 8.1/AthlonXP/VIAKT266A

Hi, I am continuosly have gcc segmentation fault problems with SuSE 8.1 (updated with latest RPMs from SuSE update ftp), latest SuSE kernel which contains fix for buggy VIA South Bridge (also from mentioned location), and gcc 3.2-46 from /projects. Small packages usually compile fine, but larger ones (e.g. quanta and especially kernel) randomly abort with message "internal error - segmentation fault". However, it is possible to continue compilation further with random success. I did all type of troubleshooting (I have even replaced RAM and reinstalled SuSE from scratch). Unfortunately, it did not help. Everything else seem to work fine (XFree in linux, WinXP with games, etc.), except gcc. I have this hardware: Athlon XP 1600, 512 MB DDR RAM (Kingston), Chaintech 7VJDA m/b (VIA KT 266A chipset), latest BIOS update, 40 GB 7200 rpm Maxtor HD. CPU temperature is very low, I have checked it. May be I have missed some packages which gcc would like to be installed, and which are not listed in RPM dependency? bloody rubbish

I am sorry but this is getting to me AGAIN !!!!! First of all I installed Open Office on SuSE 7.0 and never had any problems, but could not install 7.0 on my new pentium so I went and got 8.1, so far I feel as if I am banging my head against a wall each day. I left SuSE with Open office sarting up all the time and locking up the computer. I went back to lastest Mandrake, and could not do some of the things I could do in SuSE so I tried the lastest Red hat, I never got to log on the first time, the install got stuffed up. So I am back to SuSE, and already I feel like dumping SuSE and sticking with Microsucks software at least with that you just get the "blue screen of death" and have to reinstall the crapp each year,, Now comes back to SuSE the first install, it dad Kinternet next to the clock, but now I each time I install it comes up as another window, in tring to fix that I removed somethings I tried and now lost the 1, 2, 3, 4 to switch between the desktops. And each time I try to start "Kinternet" it says it is already runing and is a small icon on the panel, well I would use it if I could see the dam thing. -- From Eric

Hi Damon, I'm a beginner just as you and first of all, i have to say i've no answers for your probs. I'm also trying to copy cd's for more than a week. I also sent mails to this list which i couldn't get any replies. But with some of my mails i got enough replies to solve my problem or at least, make things clear. I think the problem in here is a) you can't send enough info about your problem and b) this list has an unbeleivable daily volume. Anyway, did you try cdparanoia to rip tracks on the console first? Maybe it's just a problem with the grip. Have a good day? I am well aware that this list is free and voluntary and that no one is under any obligation to solve my problems so please don't think that I am unhappy with the people in this list. As I have said in other posts, I would really like to be able to leave the Gates world but so far this has not been possible. Still I am running into a lot of little problems that keep me going to Windows to get certain tasks done because I still can't solve these problems with SuSE. I think a lot of my problems are permission related but I can't solve them without a little help. With a little detective work I was able to find from fstab and Konqueror file manager all the relationships between CD drives and names. From Konqueror I find that /cdrom is a link to /media/cdrom. fstab shows me that /media/cdrom is a mount point for /dev/cdrom and Konqueror shows me that /dev/cdrom is a link to /dev/sr0. Great, now I have the chain but what do I do with this in order to get grip to work for a normal (not root) user? What permissions must be set? Why does the IDE DVD drive work with no adjustments while the SCSI CD-RW not work for a normal user but does work for root. Is it possibly the SCSI controller that needs permission adjustment? If so, how do I find what is the /dev and what permission must be set? [rant on] The really frustrating thing is that though I believe some of these problems to be simple ones, I get zero response. Also I find that these issues are VERY common but information scarce or incomplete. I feel that the Linux community is too secretive at times. Why do I see very long threads about disk polishing or YaST 1 vs YaST 2 but zero answers to what I believe are simple questions about devices? Why is it so often I see in FAQs or posts that critical details are omitted? Sometimes I have seen over time that there are many posts on a subject that could be answered if a FAQ contained sufficient information for the reader to be able to solve his problems. A good example is CD ripping. There is a FAQ at http://dinamizm.ath.cx/articles/cdrip.html that covers the subject but has several errors and is also lacking information that could help the reader to deal with exceptions. According to the SuSE 8.0 manual and posts in this list, typing audiocd:/ in Konqueror will let me rip CDs but neither the SuSE book or the posts have bothered to mention prerequisites that would allow this to work. Another great example is something really simple: symbolic links. I could find information in "Running Linux" (O'Reilly?) on creating a symbolic link but the writer didn't bother to mention how to get rid of a link. This is really stupid. How can a beginner be expected to guess that rm is the way to get rid of a link? software removal question

What is the easiest way to remove software after installing? I have installed vncserver and viewer and would like to remove it. Thank you. Hello, had the same problem with SuSE 8.0 and P-4 (and SMP kernel). It works now as I upgraded to 8.1. Suppose it is a slightly newer kernel or better ACPI support. I believe this is actually a feature limitation of SMP machines, and no fault of the kernel itself. Hi, As the subjects says "SuSEfirewall2 The missing manual" is a 110 page PDF document trying to explain the missing parts of information of SuSEfirewall2. This version also covers the GUI configuration of SuSEfirewall2 and is available as both A4 and USLetter sizes configured for doublesided. I think I have covered almost all of it (sometimes two eyes is not enough). Before I release version 1.0 FINAL, I would like to receive input from people. OpenOffice won't display small fonts!

Hi all, I have a problem with OpenOffice on SuSE 8.1. I can't see small font sizes on my screen. For example, if a sentence is written in 8pt fonts and the zoom factor for the screen is 100%, I can't see the sentence (it's as if it isn't there), whereas a sentence just below it which is written in 12pt fonts is shown just fine. If I change the zoom factor to 150%, I can see both sentences. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Alexandros
