Firewall advice

I've got an old P75 64MB box which has, until recently, been running Smoothwall as a firewall. Since I got a rather unimpressive ADSL ethernet modem, which needs to be driven by a web browser, and which remembers the MAC address of the driving NIC, Smoothwall doesn't do the job anymore. After much effort I put SuSE-8.1 on the box. Slow, to put it mildly, but it does the job. It set up the SuSE firewall and set it to do NAT and it works fine. My question is, where do I go from here? I don't know much about the SuSE firewall, or how to harden the box against attack. I'd like it to spin down the hard disk (which presumably it doesn't need much in it's limited role) to reduce noise and power consumption. Anyone else used SuSE-8.1 as a dedicated firewall? problems with kdm

8.1 "Konsole" font... or X ? or... help?

First of all: Sorry in advance if I'm exploding all your mailboxes with this... ;-P I'm in the process of switching to 8.1, and am taking the opportunity to set up a server/client system for mail, so I can access my mail when I'm not @home. So far it's progressing nicely, and I can now log in on the server and check mail, through Squirrelmail from the 'outside', and via IMAP on the 'inside'... :D Problem: I like Mutt, and usually run it in 'Konsole'. But obviously *something*'s changed between 8.0 and 8.1, because the characters that show 'threading' (in the pager) show as the "I-can't-show-this-character -squares" and they leave 'residue' on the screen, if I use the standard 'Linux' font in settings->font. (I don't know how to describe it better in english. If you need to see it I'll take a screenshot and put it somewhere.) This is rather unfortunate, in that this is my preferred font, and it makes it almost unbearable to look in the SLE-folder :( I've tried changing the font settings from within the settings->font menu, and while the *other* 'standard' fonts (in different sizes) show the threading, they're not nearly as nice to look at. If I go to a 'real' console (tty*) threading looks great. Thing is, I'm not sure whether it's actually a *font* problem, a problem with X, or maybe a combination? Kcontrol reports the same version/release of Xfree Kcontrol claims my KDE is version: 3.0.4 Konsole help->about says: "Konsole 1.1.3 (using KDE 3.0.5)" I'm having trouble finding decent docs on Konsole too... If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it... coz I'm out of 'em :( (Guess I should've paid more attention to the 'font'-threads lately...?) Hi everyone Looks quite easy this one. Server 192.168.2.1 Client 192.168.2.2 SuSE 8.1 I have an Epson c70 running from lp0 on the server. What's the correct way with Yast2 to get the client to print too? Cheers, Steve.

'root' locked out of KDE :-(

Hi! I've upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 All went fine. I've update YOU and then udpate the rest All went fine. I've created one user'laotoma', apart from 'root'. No problem to login under KDE as 'laotoma' or 'root' I started playing with the system, and now, under KDE, I can't login as 'root' anymore, nor is the CORRECT password for 'root' accepted when I try to run YAST2 as 'laotoma'. I guess it might be because I set the system as 'paranoid'. I played also with the Video Card settings and I need to change them. Question: how can I login again as 'root' under KDE and then run YAST2? TIA Lao Toma

Freaking system clock

OK, something really weird is going on here. My system clock seems to be switching at the moment between two modes. A good one and a bad one. The good one now says 00:16 while the bad one says 01:28. Also both clocks are ticking. The KDE clock in the rightbottom just switches after a couple of seconds to the 'other' clock. Also KMail is checking for new mail all the time (it is set to check my mail every 5 minutes). I'm currently not running any special programs (Xnews in Wine, couple of shells, Konqueror, KMail and KMix). The programs I ran before were EnjoyMPEG, mplayer, MAME with GXMAME. I also switched to OSS sounddriver instead of the ALSA (sometimes do that for certain apps). What should I do? Should I reboot my computer or do something to find out the cause? In that case, what? Thanks in advance. This is really weird.

wireless pcmcia cards

Hello all. I recently set up a wireless router with my internet connection, and bought a Microsoft mn-520 wireless pcmcia adapter for my laptop. I have SuSE 8.1 and have had no luck at all with setting it up. I was wondering if people have had any luck with this card or any other card, and if maybe I should go with some- thing else or not?? MPlayer questions

Thanks to Richard Bos's advice, I checked out the Apt-SuSE site, but I was kinda nervous about installing APT, so I went to the packman site (where the Apt site said the latest RPM for MPlayer was) and, with a little patience and some determination, I got MPlayer installed. (I compiled my very first source RPM to get Lame, one of the prerequisites, installed. Go me!) It works just fine, but it's kind of slow on my 450 MHz system. I'm going to try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers; any other suggestions for pepping it up? And can I expect it to be able to run full-speed on my box? Also, how do I access the DVD menu? I couldn't find the appropriate interface button...

Fonts for staroffice

Does star office and open office use the fonts from kde3? if so can i take the fonts from the kde2 and use them in kde3?
