unable to install Corel PhotoPaint9 for Linux

Has anyone been able to install Corel PhotoPaint9 for Linux? I have been unable. the CorelPHOTOPAINT9Lnx.tar.gz package identifies SuSE as the package but does not install anything and the CorelPHOTOPAINT9LnxRPM.tar.gz package halts saying it cannot find the debian rpms. USB scanner help

Hi Folks, Does anyone have experience with USB scanners and SuSE 8.0? I've been trying to connect a Canon "Canoscan N670U" for the past few days with no success. I even downloaded and installed the latest sane/xsane which are reported to work with the Canon using the plustek backend. The scanner is seen by the kernel and is reported in /proc/bus/usb/devices. I set the vendor and product id's to match in the plustek backend, but still no joy. Yast2 finds the scanner's name, but doesn't recognize it. sane-find-scanner finds nothing. Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking? Thanks, Lew Wolfgang

postfix communication

I'm upgrading a box from redhat to suse 8.1 pro. One task this box will assume is SMTP host. I've been using sendmail on the redhat box, but am interested in using postfix provided I can get it working. :) Here's what I changed in /etc/postfix/main.cf: myhostname = somehost.domain.com mydomain = domain.com myorigin = $mydomain After starting postfix, I can send mail from the localhost and the command line using this: echo "a test" | /usr/sbin/sendmail jejonas(a)yahoo.com But I'm not able to connect to postfix from another host using: telnet somehost 25 The connection is terminated and nothing is logged in /var/log/mail or /var/log/messages to indicate what the issue may be. Any insight is appreciated. I really don't want to go back to sendmail, but then this problem doesn't appear to be a postfix config issue either. Thanks! Jason

I am unable to receive mail locally direct from the net, not thru a pop/imap provider. I have a domainname, wahoo.no-ip.org. Hi All! I was sent a link to this article with the above title and I was curious what others that about it: http://www.osopinion.com/perl/story/19996.html There is a lot of hand-waving, but it did say "16 out of the 29 advisories published (by CERT) during the first 10 months of 2002" were for "Linux Software". At first that is suprtising, even shocking, but my bet is that "Linux Software" actually means "open source", so it applies to more than just Linux (even Microsoft). It also said that "only seven security problems were documented in Microsoft products." However, if you look at the CERT site there are references to many Windows-only products which are obviously not included in the MS stats, but it seems that open-source is always included in the Linux stats. webcam program, ftp, ssh, and security

I'm playing with the "webcam" program by Gerd Knorr. I've got it working nicely, it will upload an series of images from my home network to my domain on a far ISP (linux based, of course). This is all running from SuSE 8.1. However, I have it working with ftp, and that worries me. Is the FTP sending my password in the clear? Or is the FTP that is being used in SuSE 8.1 actually secure? In the .webcamrc file there is an option to use ssh. When I set this to "1" to enable it, every time a transfer was initiated a query for the password apppeared in the shell window - and it waited for me to type in the password. Obviously, this won't do! When ssh was set to "0", and it used ftp, it used the password set in the .webcamrc file for every transfer. That's what I want - but with security! So *should* I worry about the ftp used by webcam in SuSE 8.1? If so, how can I get the ssh option to not prompt for the password on every transfer???? No 8.x upgrade feature?

Hello everybody, I recently switched to Suse, starting with 8.0 and now I want to upgrade to 8.1. So I downloaded the CD image from the FTP server, burned it on a CD and booted with it. Setup for a network installation through FTP. The Yast2 GUI installer loaded properly but then, what a surprise when I reached the step to select the installation mode saying something like: There is already a Linux installation. Do you want to: - Make a new installation. (and therefore loose the current one) - Boot the current OS. So, where is the upgrade option? I found other messages asking that on this mailing list but no answer. The proposed suse_upgrade boot option is useless. This is the first Linux OS that doesn't provide an upgrade feature (RedHat, Mandrake, ... always had that). Am I forced to buy the Suse OS to have such feature? Nothing is mentionned in the various manuals/help from the Suse web site too abut the upgrade. So could someone please clarify this missing feature? Thank you in advance. Raphael

dvd ripping with k3b

Trying to rip a dvd with k3b version 0.7.5. Downloaded the components and it lists them in k3b setup. Started dvd title copy. The overall progress is counting up but I see no light on the drive and it stays at 0%. Anyone using this? Any input? John
