Update on Ximian Gnome install

Earlier this week I reported on my problems getting Ximian Gnome to properly install on a SuSE 7.1 or 7.2 system. Others on this list have had similar poor results with the install and additionally I had some email exchange with Ximian. FYI on Tuesday of this week the Ximian site was different from the site on Monday and the Tuesday site indicated that SuSE 7.1 and 7.2 where unsupported. As of Thursday the Ximian site looked similar to Monday's site and SuSE 7.1 and 7.2 are again shown as supported. Charles A Edwards (SuSE List) had suggested removing the Ximian GDM package and re-installing from the Ximian site. I removed GDM and Glib, then used the Ximian downloader to re-install Ximian Gnome. Did this yesterday and Ximian choose to reinstall 5 packages on my 7.1 computer. Afterwards using KDM to select sessions would still result in KDE2 being loaded when Gnome was selected. I removed "Gnome" from the KDM login and replaced it with "Gnome-session". Now Ximian Gnome loads through the KDM login when gnome-session is selected. IMO the Ximian gnome user desktop is more visually appealing than the Gnome 1.4 that could be downloaded from SuSE for 7.1. Need to play with it some to find out what the advantages/disadvantages are. The really good news is that Evolution 0.11 which was working on this box before the addition of gnome is still working. KDE 2.2 Help needed on bad install latest rpms

I need help badly, I have exhausted all my knowledge and I still have two major problems. I have installed the latest KDE 2.2 from the SuSE site using YAST 1. I installed first the base section and then ran SuSEconfig, then develop, then SuSEconfig, then the applications, I ran SuSEconfig, then rebooted. I have no startup/shutdown sounds. The cdplayer works nicely. The other problem is that I can not access any cd's. I get the following error, Could not mount device. The reported error was: /dev/dvd: input/output error mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified. This occures in both root and user. Has anyone got any soloutions that might work, getting desperate. Thanks for any help in advance. KOrganizer?

Can someone point me to a download site for this application? I found some KDE pages that say it is included in KOffice, but I downloaded the 1.1 version of that, and KOrganizer is not there. It is also not listed on the KOffice web site. I can't find it on the FTP servers, but I'm probably looking in the wrong place. anyone using samba on Suse7.2 personal?

Hello, I am trying to settup samba on my suse7.2 box, and so far am not having very good luck. I did get the rpm from the suse ftp site to run flawlessly for about a week, but then I had to reinstall Linux and now it will only serve my eth1 card efficiently, the eth0 card it just decides to hang which ends up crashing the win2000 box attached to it. I dont understand why this is happening since the conf files are all exactly the same as before, the machines are exactly the same as before...everything is exactly the same as before, it just doesnt work anymore. I tried asking on the samba mailing list, but to no avail....no one will answer my posts at all, so then I decided to try the samba-latest.tar.gz, but I cant get it to compile. Well, I can get it to compile with no options, but I had originally stopped using this release because it was doing basically the same thing to me....I could transfer say, an mp3 from the linux box through samba to the eth1 box and stay at about 1.1 - 1.4 M the whole way, both sending and recieving. The eth0 box however is lucky if it even peaks at 1.1 and It cant send to the linux box at all, it just crashes. Please, if anyone has acctually gotten samba to work, and stay working on Suse 7.2 tell me how. Its not professional, so samba didnt come with it, but the rpm from suse ftp as I have said has failed me also. I am wondering what options that I may need to sonfigure it with, I assumed with pam, but that fails on me. More than one NIC active?

When running yast I am getting the message (after it automatically run SuSEconfig) "Theres more than one network card active, eth0 is going to be used" (not textual but thats the point). Kernel panic with 2.4.9 as patched from "mantel" on SuSE FTP -- WORKAROUND FOUND!

Good evening, all! I am pleased to report that I was able to get further error info out of that kernel panic by changing the screen mode so that more text fit, and that this has led to a workaround. All of the following has been reported to Mr. Mantel, but in more detail. E-mail me privately if you'd like a copy of the other messages. In any case, the error is actually an "invalid operand: 000" error on the PCI bus, not a Reiserfs problem as it had originally appeared because of the screen scrolling. The error occurs in /usr/src/linux-2.4.9/include/asm/pci.h at line 180. The error turns out to have been introduced in one of the patches in Mr. Mantel's directory. The workaround is simply to leave out this particular patch. After you've extracted all the patches into a temporary directory, just move file 199_block-himem-all-13-any-2-2.4.10pre1 to another directory or delete it (you can always re-extract it from the tarball). Apply the rest of the patches as directed in the README file. I haven't had time to thoroughly test this, but it was reliably failing to boot before the workaround and is reliably booting after, so I think this is certainly an improvement if not a truly definitive fix. As others on the list have correctly pointed out, this is not yet a production kernel; I'm running it on a non-production test machine and advise that you do the same. :-) Thanks to all who replied to my original post. A Newer modules.dep

I keep getting the message: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.0/modules.dep So I did a depmod and this seems to have made it go away. I don't understand what this means and so I must ask what causes that error (besides the obvious) and did I do the right thing in fixing it?
