I disagree with how much easier it is on windows. I'd say that installs of modern Distros like Suse are significantly easier than on windows. Take a new machine with a virgin (unformatted disk). I can do a default package install of SuSE 7.2 on this in less than half an hour (the IBM disks I have are v.quick). There's no way I can do windows NT/W2K installs in that time (you'd need half an hour on the reboots alone!). Installing a VMWare client for Windows 98 takes longer than installing SuSE from scratch. Also once you have KDE 2 installed, life can be very simple for even naive users. The comparisons are unfair because very few 'naive' users buy windows systems where they have to do the initial partitioning and install themselves. They nearly always buy preloaded systems with all the MS software preinstalled. Also bear in mind that installs from vendors like SuSE have to take the trouble to worry about what windows partition's there may be on there and offer dual-host capability. No Windows install is ever gonna concern itself with non-MS software (ie viral software in the words of BG). /dev/dsp???

Hey all, Since updating KDE, when I boot up as user, I get an error window stating that /dev/dsp was not accessible either defective or busy? Do I have something turned on that shouldn't be or something else off that should be on? I am using a Creative 512PCI sound card. All seems to be working well right now with sound, but I am at a loss as to what this message is? kscd crashes (KDE 2,2) and CD-R

Just the start of a journey with KDE 2.2- I upgraded today- and all the major items work well, except- I can't hear- my CD's that is. I can install a crdom to install other software, but when I load a music CD, the cdplayer starts and crashes. Any beta testers have a solution or anyone else have this happens? Item last- I rember a post mentioning a method to get a CDRW- (IDE) to work- I got my new toy today, so how to I make the linux system see IDE device as a scsi- (etc.conf cahnge? KDE update probs - no import functionality

Hello, I have just installed the latest KDE 2.2 and KOffice 1.1 rpms One thing I'm wanting to get working really, really badly is the MS Office import functionality. But this is the most frustrating things yet: When I want to open a word document, I can set the filter either to all openable files or to MS Word, and the filter prevents me from even seeing the docs. i.e. when I navagate to a directoy with .doc files in it, they don't appear in the selection window at all, so I can't click on one to open it. Then I thought I'd try Importing Excel docs. Well, at least in XL's case, I was able to see the .xls in the selection window, but when I actually opened it, I got the following errors: koffice (lib kofficecore): WARNING: Got no results with [X-KDE-NativeMimeType] = = 'application/msexcel' kio (KTrader): KServiceTypeProfile::offers( KOfficePart, ) kio (KTrader): No profile, using KServiceType::offers, result: 7 offers koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: Found no KOffice part able to handle application/msexcel! koffice (lib kofficecore): ERROR: Check your installation (does the desktop file have X-KDE-NativeMimeType and KOfficePart, did you install KOffice in a different prefix than KDE, without adding the prefix to /etc/kderc ?) kparts: 0x809ed70 emitting activePartChanged (nil) This boggles me, since I installed rpm from SuSE's ftp server, I assume that the rpms are built correctly. Can anyone give me some pointers here? has anyone been able to use the MS Word import? How? Which KDE22-SuSE ftp or KDE ftp for SuSE distro?

I am going to install the the kde 2.2 and I wanted opinions on whether the KDE ftp for the SuSE distro's or the SuSE ftp with K2.2. is more stable? I believe I'll follow Ben's advice and dl the seperate sub branchs into discrete folders e.g. base into base folder, devs in dev, and apps in apps folder - running SuSEConfig after each sub branch is install. Any other comments or clues would be appreciated - I'd really like to avoid the artsd/sound snafu if at all possible (oh and does it matter whether or not you upgrade the XF86 before or after?). Hi: OK. When all else fails, go back to the beginning, I say. Well, forgot, but finally dawned on me to go all the way back, and checked DNS, and, sure enough, I was still using the old Source.net DNS servers. So, forget the sendmail question. It was a DNS issue, and the envelope sender issue is resolved. Thanks, Tom
