[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Dell 2650/Perc3 Raid Controller easy switch??

I am currently using a Dell 2650 Poweredge server without a raid controller. It's using the standard adaptec onboard SCSI as it stands. I'm wondering if anyone has installed the Perc3 raid controller and had the Linux install just pop right up (assuming the megaraid module was loading)? I wouldn't need to reformat if all I was doing was switching controllers and hardware mirroring, right? Thanks, Rich shado(a)mc.net

Top output not adding up.

Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. [SLE] problems with KVM switches.. losing mouse control on 8.0

I am using a multiple servers with a KVM switch and I find that I lose control of my mouse as I return back to the SUSE 8.0 KDE. Are any you experiencing the same thing. I have tried other mice and different KVM switches. -I am using a Belkin KVM switch with hot key functionality for changing monitors. -I am using PS/2 mice The only way I can stablize the mouse is if I return to YAST 2 and try to re-configure the mouse when it is a problem... Otherwise I have been rebooting to get the mouse stability.

Version 8.0 installation from hard drive with YaST2 possible?

"No installation data found on medium" "Could not mount the source medium" Previously I was alawya able to use the orginal YaST to do hard drive installation, I was never able to get YaST2 past the above errors, if I exit YaST2 and start YaST everything works fine. It has always been this way for me and I didn't mind as I like using YaST. However, I am told that version 8.0 will no longer have YaST. Does anyone know if version 8.0 of SuSE pro will allow paying customers the right to copy the installation disks to their hard drive and do a complete installtion and further updates directly from the hard drive? If I have been skipping something, please let me know, it has been a while since I installed 7.3 my curent SuSe distro installation disks are on my /hda11/7.3 thanks in advacne joe

(Newbie alert) Zip drive confusion.

Hi all, I have just tried to access my USB 250 Zip drive in SUSE 7.3 Pro, only to receive the following message: "Could not mount device. The reported error was mount /dev/sda4: unknown device." I have checked and ziptool is installed, I have a Zip icon on my desktop, but obviously, something needs to be configured somewhere. I read /usr/share/doc/packages/ziptool/README, but there wasn't any help as far as I could decipher. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

I wouldn't actually say the support staff "knows" linux. Times I've had to call, (which was only because I IpTabled myself out of the router -- idiot) the service people were friendly and sympathetic, but with NO experience of *nix. The fellows I talked to tried their best, and actually took notes from what I said I was trying out (ifconfig, route and friends), but actually told me that their boss was giving them dirty looks for trying to "support" one of those Linux people. Their manual, interestingly enough has sections on UNIX installations, which basically back out of it all by saying that typical *nix users are smarter about all this stuff, and should make it all come out fine by setting up their own flavor of DHCP. If you know of genuinely *nix-savvy tech support folks there, could you mention names? I'd ask for them by name at need, and send kudos-type emails to their managers commending them for their Linux expertise. Cheers. ReiserFS + mirroring + ATA

Hi, I have two hard disks:- ata1 - master = IBM 30Gig ATA100 (/dev/hda) ata2 - slave = IBM 30Gig ATA100 (/dev/hdb) Any ideas how I can software mirror these and use ReiserFS as a disk format? SuSE has to be bootable off either of the disks *and* if one drive blows up, I need to be able to swap it out with another one and rebuild the mirror pretty quickish. I dont need to hot-swap - powering down is fine. Can someone give us an idea where to start please! Cheers, - Chris.

Hi, Last night i posted message asking on help to aviod my system shutdown by it self. Well put statement suggested in lilo.con in the appriate localtion suggested but jut know the system in question just power off again for no good reason. I am running SuSe 7.1 Kernel 2.4.13 Mantel RPM. 512 MB RAM 10 GB (ReiserFS / ext2 /boot) Matorx Millimum 2 MB (It's work machine ) D-Link 538 TX+ 10/100 MB What noticed this occurs when memory drop below 350 MB the system shutdown when i am going in to X/Gnome. What i find strange is i am running RH 7.1 + Kernel 2.4.13 Kernel.org with exact same MB/RAM/HD/NIC etc.. and all it well with it. I have had this problems since kernel 2.4.0 . I have checked RAM with memtest and it check out i have switched ram from RH 7.1 Box with this one done memory test as well it check out but still occurs. I have always love SuSe but seriously thinking of calling it quit's with this distro. I never any problems with other distro/kernels acting like this. Any ideas :) Alex :)

Burn bootable CDs

Hi fellows. I am thinking of burning images of the below kind: 1) bootable both Linux and DOS 6 2) Linux should boot from CD into 16 MB HDD 3) Securing my installed Souzie for backup reasons, it should then work from CD (inside Ramdisk), if possible Now, please how can I get this done, what do I need? If detailed explanation is asked too much, a little friendly point into the right direction was enough.

I am informed by a website that I have a browser that doesn't support Java and so it will not go any further with whatever it might display. This happened in Netscape and Konqureor both. Is there a plug-in I should get and use, or some kind of modification of the kernel (brrr!) of what? TIA --doug

Hi Has anyone got Realplayer G2 working with SuSE 6.3? If so, is it straight forward to install? I have got an alpha version of the generic binary for kernel 2.2. What install procedure did you use? Playing DVD's on TV

Hello I got my DVD player going on Linux! But now, I've bought the cables, hooked it up to the television... and want to play movies there, but it's not working. I've followed the instructions in the TV_OUT file from nvidia, but it doesn't seem to work. The picture on TV changes, and the colors to as I change something on my X server, but nothing can be seen (not even blurry). I tried it on windows, and there it seems to work. I think it might be something with my refresh rate ... Has anyone gotten this to work? My config AMD Athlon with SuSE 7.1, kernel 2.4.2, XFree 4 (from distro), nvidia drivers. Used resolution for DVD's 640x480 and 800x600 Asus V7100 geforce2MX COMBO AGP video-card with video-out. Connected to the VCR using a SCART cable which is connected to TV-set via antenna-cable (my TV is about 20 years old, without SCART offcourse :-( ) Thanks for any help! Kind regards Guy

Ok, I finally have some time to work on my Linux system: 1) I added export EDITOR=joe to /etc/profile.local, but when I enter edit at the shell, I happen to enter vi again. Solution? And how can I give options to joe when starting via this alias? is the joerc the correct way or have I to change the whole alias? 2) I set some aliases like alias $='ls -alX', and now I am experiencing that I do not get what I wanted. I would like the appearance of the LS output to be like with doscmd=/o:gen, that is directories sorted in a-z order FIRST, then the a-z sorted FILES. installing scsi

7.2 scsi aic7xxx same as mandrake ??

Hi All Im wondring if SuSE 7.2 has the same flakey aic7xxx driver as mandrake 8.0 has ?? the reason i think so is that when i use my cdrom/cdr/dvd drive connected to my onboard aic7890 the system just hangs until the job is done. Has anyone tryed to compile ther owen kernel 2.4.4-4GB with this driver ?? Next Q How do i compile a kernel with the options as the default kernel use to load the driver as modules ?? and is this possible. Rember im a newbi so not to complicatet please :-) TIA Dan

I'm new to SuSE linux and I am a bit confused. There is a lot of great stuff in SuSE, but it can get a bit overwhelming. I just loaded 7.2 on a workstation and Server. I linstalled the DHCP (server) and wanted to change the init levels so that the daemon will start. In Red Hat there is a command line utility called ntsysv. I could not find it in the SuSE distribution, but I did find ksysv which seems like a nice utilty to do the same thing. However I can't seem to start the darn thing. The error message says I do not have permission--even if I run KDE as root. When I had 7.1 loaded I was able to get into the utility. It asked me to enter the root password. Now it does not give me the choice. It launches straight into the utility asks what Distribution I am running and then tells me I can't run it. Any Ideas. ( I opened a window and tried to start the utility on the command line. It failed because I was trying to display on my login user Xwindow server.
