That line should go into /etc/modules.conf not /etc/rc.config -tosi

USB has nothing to do with SCSI, it has everything to do with INITRD though :-). INITRD is responsible for loading modules before the kernel boot...Imagine the kernel trying to mount the hard drive without having the correct paramaters to read the SCSI card...And having those details on the hard disk, that cannot be read until it is mounted :-). Initrd will load the module, therefore it has the scsi paramters up and running for the kernel to read it when it needs to. Matt -- "The only thing complex about Linux are the users themselves." In rc.config is a line:
INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx usbcore"
what has aic7xxx to do with usb ?

I don't know if this line has any effect. When I used in the past had no noticeable result.
In rc.config I did nothing, but I found a line:
INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx usbcore"
I don't know when aic7xxx was added.
This line is generated when you install SuSE. I don't if the config tools modify it. In any case, this is used by a script called mk_initrd, a utility to be used to configure your boot process. Try this: - install the new kernel (you did this already, right?) - run 'mk_initrd' - run 'lilo' - re-boot the machine. -- Rafael

With 7.2, be careful....Seems more modular. I managed to get the rootfs not found etc message when doing this (no big deal, just boot off of CD 2 and enter linux yast1, then start installation, boot installed system). If you doubt that scsi_hostadapter line, ignore it for now. In /etc/rc.config find the line called INITRD, this will list your initrd modules that need to be loaded before the rest of the load. In the appropriate place, along with the other modules, enter this: ide-scsi Save and the type: mk_initrd Then lilo reboot StarTux

So after placing ide-scsi in the INITRD section you typed mk_initrd and then lilo and still did not work after reboot? Matt

I still have to use modprobe to activate the scsi driver. It is not that bad.. at least it works, but it would be nice.. if that cd player works right after starting up. Where are my drives mounted? Perhaps I can place a 'modprobe aic7xxx' before that. in rc.config:
INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx usbcore ide-scsi"

mk_initrd creates the file /boot/initrd. It is part of the lilo boot mechanism, you have to run lilo if you create one. You lilo.conf entry should look like this: image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/sda2 label = linux initrd=/boot/initrd
I still have to use modprobe to activate the scsi driver. It is not that bad.. at least it works, but it would be nice.. if that cd player works right after starting up.

You don't need to install aic7xxx again, the initrd file should have done it at boot. I lost the beginning of this thread, why are loading aic7xxx? Do you have SCSI devices that need it? why are you loading ide-scsi? -- Rafael Herrera Laboratory for Computational Neuroscience University of Pittsburgh http://www.neuronet.pitt.edu/~raffo
