why suse does not upgrade rpm for 7.0 so it can handle those rpm with major #> 4 -- SuSe 7.0 Linux 2.4.2 i686 Fri Apr 6 19:05:00 EDT 2001

Voodoo1 and 2.4.2 Kernel

I am trying to figure out how to get my voodoo1 card to work under the 2.4 kernel. Here is the error I get when trying to run quake2: _GlideInitEnvironment: libglide2x.so Voodoo expected, none found. If I boot 2.2.18, Voodoo works fine. But I have everything set up...iptables, sound, etc for the 2.4 kernel. Magic Sysreq keys: kernel compilation needed?

There's a feature in recent kernels called Magic Sysreq that assigns particular meanings to various Alt-SysReq-x key combinations. For example, Alt-SysReq-B forces an immediate reboot and Alt-SysReq-S syncs your file systems. I have this working with a stock (non-Suse) 2.2.18 kernel on a system upgraded from SuSE 6.3 to SuSE 7.1. I recompiled the kernel myself and set the configuration options. Is it possible to make this feature available (on my other system) without getting the kernel sources and recompiling them? Paul Abrahams

I have onboard sis6326 AGP and configured it with XFree86.3. Then within KDE I started SaX2 and make the configuration for XFree86 4. Rumen

[OT] Anyone got Win4Lin working on SuSE 7.1

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has managed to get Win4Lin 2.0 working on SuSE 7.1. I have patched the SuSE 2.2.18 Kernel as well using the pre-patched 2.2.18 kernel on Netraverse they all appear to compile OK. The mki_install_hooks appear to be OK. Win4Lin seems to install without any errors. When I go to install Windows it fails with the following error message IMPROPER_INSTL: dos : ERROR: Improperly installed Permissions or privileges are incorrect. The same error message appears when I run /usr/bin/dosboot Regards, Graham Smith ----------------------------------

KDE2: blank desktop for root

As a result of recovering from a messed-up 7.1 system, my KDE2 desktop for root is blank. Nothing on it, not even the icon bar at the bottom. I get the startup sound, and I can get out with Ctl-Alt-Del, but I can't do anything while I'm there. Any suggestions as to how to reinitialize it? My user desktop is more or less OK (except for the lack of sound). Paul Abrahams

Poor rendering of Type 1 fonts in StarOffice 5.2

I was wondering if, perhaps using either KDE 2.1.1 or XFree 4.0.3, someone has found a way of making StarOffice 5.2 display Type 1 and other vector fonts in such a way that they no longer look like overblown raster fonts. (I'm currently using SuSE 7.1, KDE 2.0.1 and XFree86 4.0.2) Michael
