SOLVED!! Removable Media Mounting Problem

Dear SuSE list users, I have just solved my problem dealing with mounting removable media! I had some hints from isupport(a)suse.de and some of you here on the list. Thanks!! Here is a look at the problem and solution. Under SuSE 6.3 there were some Support Database Articles that tell users of removable media such as SCSI ZIP drives (Iomega) how to mount their cartridges. The article pointed out that these DOS or M$ formatted carts have partitions 1 thru 4. So it tells the user to create a fstab entry that looks like the line below: /dev/sdb4 /rwmo auto noauto,user 0 0 ^ then to mkdir /rwmo and then to issue: linux# mount /rwmo to complete mounting the removable carts. And here is the BUG: Sometime between 6.3 and 7.1 SuSE, something changed!! Now the user MUST NOT set the fstab entry for the removable drive to a partition # . the entry must be set to /dev/sdb (SCSI) or /dev/hda (IDE) only. once the fstab entries are correct, the user can mount both SCSI MO carts and LS-120 'super floppies' with out trouble. I'm sure that SCSI ZIP drives will work this way as well, but I don't have one to test. Another observation: I have installed 7.1 several times now on three different machines using YAST 1 & 2. But the installs did not create fstab entries or KDE device icons for any of the removable media drives; either LS-120 'super floppies' or SCSI r/w Magneto Optical cartridges; even tho I made sure that there was media in the drives during each install. Michael??? Is this an oversight? Cool observations: When I installed SuSE 7.1 on a machine that had NT4 on it, YAST2 made the correct fstab entries and KDE device icons for all of the FAT and NTFS drive letters of the NT4 partitions. On that same install there was a 7 CD SCSI 'Changer" that can hold 7 different CDs and mount any one CD. The CDs are SCSI LUNs "logical unit numbers". Well I was pleasantly surprised to see that YAST2 had created fstab entries and KDE device icons for each CD (lun)!! Great work SuSE!! .................... Second Install SuSE 7.1 Pro.....

Hi All, well that was the Hell Install, which very much surprised me! Incompetant local suppliers to one side (I got mine from Aussie), I AM glad I've got it, as it has been some versions since I purchased an OFFICIAL one. ;-) SAX 1 & 2 would not play ball with the OFFICIAL SuSE kernel 2.4.2, but went ok with 2.2.18 & that took some time to figure. I went to bed @ 2am & just got it running now! (FIC 503+ MB, K6-2-450, Matrox Mill 2....) Now to test out more of the system & see how it flies. As ever, thanx for putting this distro together & the pin is UBER Kool! :-) Greek Geek :-) Tired but happy! --GG

Linux's dirty little secret: Printing

I have spent the last 3 days trying to get 7.1 to print. In that time I have read both Printing-howto and PrintUsage-Howto, all that I can find in the Suse documents, and the deja linux archives and many other web resources, including the BSD handbook. It is obvious from the posts I read in the archives that my problems are not unique. At first I was trying to print to a netware printer using the ncp package which works fine in connecting to my netware server. I gave that up and connected a printer locally to lpt1. I can print text to this printer from the command line: cat myfile.txt > /dev/lp0 so I know that the printer is connected and working. I have followed the documentation on setting up a queue and filters in both yast and lprsetup/aspfilter and none of this stuff works. From message archives that I have read, I am convinced that this is a black art. I am an experienced network admin and with accurate documentation and newsgroup/list archives I can handle just about anything. But the resources available for linux printing seem woefully inadequate. I sure would appreciate any pointers to resources I have missed or anything else that might get me going. thanks, Otto Porter

Update: [SLE] iBCS hidden "overflow"

After three weeks without a clue, I was searching on the net, and I found this single mail thread: http://www.tux.org/hypermail/linux-msdos/1998-Jan/0091.html And there is a patch to avoid a the problem I have, but under "lredired" drives (dosemu). So just seeing the patch, I see the trouble is caused by the "flock()", so mi first try is that my trouble seems to be from the same function, but implemented in the iBCS module. Then I have two questions, 1. In some way, I feel like there is a "hidden" limit in flock(), so when it's reached, the module can't flock() anything and the whole system fails. Does anyone have some info about the iBCS internals? 2. In older version of SuSE (I remember 5.X series and probably early 6.X series), there was something like "Heavy load Server Kernel" or something like that. Does someone know if there are similar "class" of kernel, in the 2.2.X branch? (maybe from SuSE or maybe by others). My problem begins when the system is running longer than a day, usually between 40 and 48 hours continuous running, the XDBF system just hangs all the terminals with a message from foxpro sayin "Record not available", and no one can write those dbf's. The system load is tiny, the disks are less than 10% of the capacity, but I can't get the XDBF system to work again until I reboot the machine. I want to know if someone have experienced this kind of trouble, and can help me, because I'm clueless on this issue, and the iBCS mailing list is out-of-this-world. Thank you for any info you can give me (or point me, to search by my self). Postgresql in SuSE 7.1 vs 6.4

Hi all: I recently upgraded my system from SuSE 6.4 to 7.1. In doing so I was moved from postgresql 6.5 to 7.0 Today I was looking into moving a database from the 6.5 format to the 7.0 format, and it seems that I need an installation of 6.5 in order to do it. Is this true? I have trouble believing that there is no upgrade path for those of us who were automagically moved to the new version in an OS upgrade. I've tried uninstalling the 7 version and installing a 6.5 RPM, but now I get library version problems. Can anybody tell me an easy way, on a 7.1 system of: a)Simply getting a version of pg_dump to work so I can move the data over, or b)Reverting to the old version without breaking the apps that need the current libraries. I'm really trying to avoid doing a large source compilation or having to restage a machine for what should be a simple data conversion task. Opps, just to Rob. Here it is below. Rob - "boot the machine with the boot disk choose language etc.. yast2 comes up choose abort" No can do. Boot floppy loads initrd, then linux, in the process reports the following: scsi: 0 hosts scsi: detected total looks for the hardware, then asks for the modules floppy. As soon as you select O.K. the install jumps to a teal colored box saying "loading data into ramdisk 2210 kB" and runs to 100% and then immediately jumps to a black screen with white cursor blinking in the upper left hand corner. That it, all locked up, or a least no further install runs. System is based around an Adaptec AHA-2940U2/W SCSI II controller; virtually everything in the system is scsi based so with no recognition of the controller I'm virtually dead, not true, I AM dead. I tried an install on my IDE system at work this morning and it ran smooth as silk, so the problem lies with the hardware I'm sure on this system. Now what? Dave
