Configuring Soundblaster 16/AWE 32 ISA Card in v7.1

Thanks to all who helped me configure X 4.0.2 and the login via KDM. I have another problem which doesn't seem to be totally resolved by any of the online sources I've looked at so far. I'm sure it's a FAQ, but I haven't found the solution as of yet. In its prior configurations (as first a Caldera box and then, a Mandrake 7.2 box), I have able to get my Soundblaster 16/AWE 32 compatible ISA sound card to work. Caldera detected it during install, while in Mandrake, I had to run sndconfig (or something like that) from a terminal to set it up. The configuration through YAST2 does not work in my particular situation. However, I think this is due to some other underlying problem. First of all, I installed the system via an FTP installation, so if I'm missing any modules, etc., I could use some instruction as how to go through the system to "grab" the appropriate packages. For example, at login, xconsole launches (don't know if this happens by default or not). Three messages come up: modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-0 If I run the sound card config through Y AST2, I do the following: Start ALSA and Start sequencer are checked (default) I then click on "Add soundcard" and select Soundblaster 16 I then get the message: "An error occured during installing: The kernal module snd-card-sb16 for sound support could not be loaded." I also get admonished to make sure that ALSA is correctly installed (something of which I am not aware of a way to check). It also suggests potentially trying OS/Free or another module. Any suggestions or links to helpful sites appreciated. Greg Lentz

Volume is high. No doubt. I have no trouble with that, but I guess people with dial-up connections spend a *lot* of time downloading mail? But then again I know that I, for one, enjoy having posts about everything dropping in my mail, so I can benefit from other's experiences/solutions. Personally I've solved some troubles on my systems from other's postings, and volume accounts for most of it...:-) Anyway my .02$: What I really miss is a 'next by thread' function in the archives. As it is browsing the archives involves always loading the main (montly) index which, by the end of the month, takes forever (and I'm on DSL). So if I'm looking for info on some subject I must: - open the index - Search the index for candidate subjects - go to the message, read it, if no help I must - return to index - go to next message, read it, if no help I must - return to index - go to next message, read it, if no help I must and so on What I mean to say is that, as it is the archive isn't very *browsable*, and IMHO adding this feature would not only make it more comfortable, it would also more easily let people go check the archives for stuff, thus negating the *need* for downloading the large amounts of mail, and ultimately solve this thread...? Locating program 'ginstall'

A common problem, not in the SuSE FAQ but probably should be. I need a file (/usr/bin/ginstall in this case). S3 graphic card on SuSE 6.4

PLEASE HELP ME!! I am satisfied with SuSE Linux 6.4, except one problem: I'm not able to configure the screen resolution to 800x600 with million colors. My graphic chip is S3 id 86C391, my OS is SuSE Linux 6.4 with SAX2 and YAST2. Using SAX2 the os detects the chip correctly, but suddendly the configuration test fails, I cannot have any 3D support and the resolution of 800x600 with million colors is a dream for my machine! CAN PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME? I have another pc with same graphic card, running Win 98SE and it works correclty at the higher resolution permitted.

HELP HELP HELP I'm using SuSE 6.4 on a ASUS P2B with Celeron 400, it works fine. My only problem is the graphic adapetr configuration: with SAX2 I'm not able to work at 800 x 600 with 24bpp... I have to stay with 640 x 480, no 3D support and 65536 colors.... it's a limited view, with some windows I have to move them up to reach the OK or CANCEL or APPLY buttons... It's like missing a leg or some fingers!! Can someone please help me?? I'm quite new in Linux, able to edit manually some files if necessary. Thanks a lot in advance. Enrico

How to convert Kmail Mails to M$ Outlook

YAST pkg install failure

Dear SuSE list, While using yast 1.09.2 to install new rpm's to a SuSE 7.1 system, yast listed errors for 10 of the packages. The error msg is "can't get PREIN for KDEBASE_2.1.1-15.rpm" There are 9 more instances of the same msg on the other 9 packages. YAST offered no further info nor any way to determine the cause. These packages were direct from the SuSE FTP site. Now KDE fails to startup and X hangs on the background display. LVM's vgscan takes sooo long on boot

When I boot vgscan for LVM takes a very long time to run. Can I shorten this time? Perhaps by getting rid of some /dev/entries? E.G. I have two drives and a CD yet /dev has hda* through hdi*. Can I get all but the first four. And can I get rid of the partitions not use by one of the disk? Or will such pruning not help vgscan any way? TIA, KurtRR

hi all, Well just ordered pacbell dsl. Do they have good service? Also, anyone know where I can pickup a used 'Westell Modem'(hopefully from a ex-pacbell dsl user). They also told me that I will need software: Enternet 300. How will this software interact with my linux box? Anyone went through this ordeal?
