Re: [SLE] This list is too busy: any improvements on the horizon?
Volume is high. No doubt. I have no trouble with that, but I guess people with dial-up connections spend a *lot* of time downloading mail? But then again I know that I, for one, enjoy having posts about everything dropping in my mail, so I can benefit from other's experiences/solutions. Personally I've solved some troubles on my systems from other's postings, and volume accounts for most of it...:-) Anyway my .02$: What I really miss is a 'next by thread' function in the archives. As it is browsing the archives involves always loading the main (montly) index which, by the end of the month, takes forever (and I'm on DSL). So if I'm looking for info on some subject I must: - open the index - Search the index for candidate subjects - go to the message, read it, if no help I must - return to index - go to next message, read it, if no help I must - return to index - go to next message, read it, if no help I must and so on What I mean to say is that, as it is the archive isn't very *browsable*, and IMHO adding this feature would not only make it more comfortable, it would also more easily let people go check the archives for stuff, thus negating the *need* for downloading the large amounts of mail, and ultimately solve this thread...? Other than that, I agree with Jonathan Wilson: "[SLE] [SUGGESTION] Re: [SLE] This list is too busy: any improvements on the horizon?" This would be very nice indeed! Eo.02$ Jon Clausen

Haven't done 7.1, so my apologies if it needs to be 7.1 we're talking about, by I have done a console NFS install of 7.0 onto a few old 486/33s. All that must be done on the server side is to mount CD1 and export the CD-ROM mount point. Make sure that the IP address that you will assign to the client is in the range allowed to connect in the exports file. If you don't currently have an NFS server set up, then you simply have to start the portmapper and NFS server after creating/editing /etc/exports (you have to restart the NFS server if you edit this file). Do this with: rcportmap start rcnfsserver start The appropriate line from my /etc/exports looks like: /cdrom 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 (ro) My network has the address range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254. On the client, stick the floppy in and boot into YaST1. Go through the usual bits and then at the appropriate time select NFS install. Simply answer all of the questions and the install should proceed pretty much as is usual with YaST1. I need to send mail to all users. How can I create a subscriber's list for all users so that all the users can receive same mail. Luckson.

I'm sure I told you how to do this before... Here's a virtually identical email to the one before. If you've after something else this time, give more details. As root, use the attached script and pipe the output to a file, e.g.: bash:~ # getusers.pl > userlist Then edit the file with vi or your favourite text editor to remove and users you don't want to be on the list (e.g. root, system users, which are usually at the start of the passwd file). Put the userlist in some sensible directory, like /etc/mail, then edit your /etc/aliases file to include a line similar to: everyone: :include:/path/to/your/userlist and run 'newaliases' (to rebuild the aliases database). Note that this will create an alias that all of your users can use (by sending mail to 'everyone@your.domain.net'). If you don't want this you can comment it out after using it yourself (and rebuild the aliases database). Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\

[snip] I think this is a better approach ( YMMV :-) ( printf "allusers:" ; cat /etc/passwd | grep -v nobody | \ awk '{FS=":" ; if($3>100){printf("%s,",$1);}}' | sed 's/,$//' ; echo ) \
/etc/aliases ; newaliases
to insert all users *except* system users ( on RedHat and perhaps others, system users happen to get higer ID's than 100 !!) And then cat /etc/aliases | grep -v ^allusers: >/etc/aliases ; newaliases to remove the allusers alias. - -tosi -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE6y5z66mRH+PEpr2YRArPjAJ0bLZkonEdxopIcc/l4/9+dZg0nUgCgqbX2 Vsy8T6K+JP5fJPbS53f4858= =tdg1 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I discovered the hard way that an FTP install assumes that all the RPM's are in a single tree on the server, so it suppresses the 'disk change' messages. After installing all the .rpms from CD 1, it rapidly scrolled several hundred 'package not found' messages by my screen. I had to insert CD2, then select 'Start Installation' again, and repeat the process for CD 3 thru 6. I've never done an NFS install, so I don't know if the same assumption is being made, but I thought I'd mention the workaround anyway...

I did an NFS install on my desktop (my DVD drive is on my laptop) and it was the full graphical install, as if the DVD were in my desktop. I have a feeling that the NFS install will give you disk change messages if you're using a CDROM. I haven't tried it though. Alternatively, DVD drives are pretty cheap nowadays. I still remember buying my first CDROM, for the express purpose of installing Slackware without having to change floppy disks... - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.4 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE6y1Jj+FOexA3koIgRApB5AJ4og5/rxz1gO6zHEVS9XjCv9tsJbQCeO1rd lnvUIAUi/5KgTsjxGtb4jX4= =k/iW -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
