This is for some interesting challenge: I have some leasing-notebook from my company, on which NT4 is installed and I was not given any installation disk/cd nor manual. This is why I have to copy that whole EXISTING NT partition using... dd if=/dev/hda of=/data/nt4.img My problem at this time is that both the old NT4 and the new NT4 partition have to be precisely the same size (AFAIRC), which I have yet to encounter... :-) Now, that I have come this far, do I need to use the Blocksize (bs) and Count Parameters when I want to copy THE WHOLE partition to an image file? Can I not simply skip these values? Otherwise, to my humble knowledge, I shall go through this - hopefully correct - way of calculation: Units according to fdisk on the nr4 harddisk: Units = cylinders of x * y bytes (y is typically 512 bytes large) bs equals x, that's for sure, but what about count? Or what about Bcount? That what value should I set that one? *Just in case I need this calculation* Am I right in that this way the Partition Boot Record (NOT the mbr!) is copied as well? Why do I get a spurious dialog requesting a username and password to connect to ftp.suse.com? If I need such, where/how do I get it? I got halfway thru a download and now I need a username/password to resume.

Do I need a seperate /boot partition on a 36 GB drive with 7.1 ?

Howdy, I'm about to install SuSE 7.1 on 2 servers that have 36 GB SCSI drives, and I need a sure answer to this question: to I need a /boot partition or not? One reason my boss decided to switch to SuSE it because of support for RieserFS, but when I try to make a /boot partition and format it with RieserFS, I get an error message about not being able to use ReiserFS in a partition smaller then +30M. I tried telling it to make it +40M and +50M and I still get that error message. I heard that 7.1 comes with the new lilo so you don't really "need" a separate /boot partition, but this makes me nervous. Can I be 100% assured that these servers will never be unable to bott due to an unreachable kernel? Or do I need to use a separate /boot partition? If I need to use a separate /boot partition for safety, how do I manage to get it formatted with RieserFS? I don't want to leave it ext2 because we've crashed some servers and had to wait, (with clients howling for their web site to come back online) while fsck runs, and we have to pay a fee to get the techs at our hosting co to type in the fsck commands. We want to use RieserFS to do away with that. Hi, This is (I think/hope) a curiosity question rather than a problem. I am running a kernel.org 2.4.3 kernel on my 7.0 system. I have an Adaptec SCSI card that runs under the AIC7xxx driver. When I access my scanner (an ageing Umax Vista s6E), I see this in my log: linux kernel: (scsi0:A:5:0): refuses synchronous negotiation. Using asynchronous transfers Apr 7 11:26:35 linux last message repeated 21 times There is no similar problem with my scsi cd. This does not seem to be causing a deterioration in transfer rates or any other problems, and maybe scanners are inherently asynchronous, but I don't recall seeing the message before switching to this kernel, in which the AIC7xxx driver is new. Dear Commodore-64-lovers *AND* Linux-fans! This has come to my ears and made me go like nostalgic... Someone has programmed a Linux-based tool to do the following: - connect c64 and PC to let c64 use the harddrives I was astonished and do now want to know about this tool. Was it Linux64? SuSE 7.1 no sound form Cd

I all I just install SuSE 7.1 everything went fine I have setup my sound card I can listen to mp3 file but if place a CD in I can't hear any sound.. can any body tell where to look.. ===== ,. \\|// - ? I just received my copy of 7.1 Professional. When I opened the box CD#6 was cracked. Can someone let me know what is included on that disc?
