Hi SuSE people, This tarball does not compile. It hangs from the beginning (make menuconfig or make xconfig). Only by cutting out a few 'sick' lines (which, fortunately, I did not need) was I able to get it working.

From where is YaST2/7.1 getting updates?

The answer may be right under my nose, but I'm not seeing it. If I go to the SuSE FTP site, I see packages which are fresher than what I got with the 7.1 distribution. If I tell YaST2 to update it finds some stuff, but not nearly as much as I see on the FTP site. This freshness issue is one good reason to understand where YaST2 is going for these updates. Another good reason is that it's dangerous to allow my computer go out connecting to servers I know nothing about. Any ideas? Steve

2.4.2 Kernel at SuSE ftp site

I orginally used the 2.4.2 kernel from kernel.org, could not get the modules working. I downloaded the linux-2.4.2.SuSE-1.tgz from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/ That kernel compiled and worked fine without any problems. What is different? Are their big changes that need to be done to use a new kernel with SuSE or is it just the location? I used YaST and it placed everything in /linux-2.4.2.SuSE . I was previously using /usr/src thanks in advance joe

questions about installing SuSE 6.4 PPC on a UMAX clone

During a recent bit of dumpster diving, I happened upon an undamaged powermac clone (the model number escapes me, but it is one of the 'pizza-box' UMAX machines). The HD appears to be completely blank, though, and I want to put linux on it without having to go through buying and installing MacOS first, since i don't plan to use it. i understand there is a bootloader designed specifically for these older macs, namely MiBoot, that comes with 6.4, but the documentation in the box is a little...um, sparse on that point, and I can't find any howtos anywhere. Does anyone out there in listland have any experience or information on this one? advTHANKSance, -c

bootable cd howto

Hello all I would like to know, what exact steps are needed to make a bootable cd with a linux kernel on it... I presume, i will have to make a custom kernel for it, but i am not so sure, whether all the functioanlity has to be monlithic in the kernel and/or where to put the modules.. If somebody knows a step by step sequence or can point me to an url or howto, i would be verz thankfull... <while writing this mail, i found the cd-writing howto, which has a *brief* description of the process... does somebodz know a url with more details?> best regards Alex

Someone recently asked about JavaScript standards adherence. In all the fun I've been having looking for new and interesting ways to break things, I haven't had a chance to respond. This is a very interesting subject, and there are some very good people on the netscpe news group for javascript. If you are interested take a look. Why Swap space is not mounted?

Hello Linux folks. When I compiled a new 2.4.0 kernel and rebooted the system my both swap partitions didn't get mounted. When I returned back to old 2.2.18 kernel both swap partitions were mounted properly. Could somebody explain me please why it happened? Thanks. I run across this again and again. I sit there and i am under stress and need to pull some rpm file off the ftp within 2 min. it's basically impossible to do. 1. u cant locate it fast enough because there is no good search index for the ftp packages (wish we had a search index on the http site) 2. you start yast and it tries to connect to suse.com always because its default. it dies halfway thru you making it to the correct directory. you feel annoyed that suse doesn't offer a listing of mirrors as option in yast. 3. you remember an ip address of a mirror you used ones. damn it it won't connect. did they move the mirror or is the ip wrong? you wish again yast would have an options list of what ftp site/mirror you want to connect to. no wonder suse.com is so overloaded if yast always defaults to it. oh well that is life....I know you can change the default site to connect to by hand but I wish yast came with a site options list. mk _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Why SuSE7.1 creates .kde and .kde2 in /

Hello SuSE folks, Is this a feature or a bug? Why SuSE7.1 creates .kde and .kde2 directories in / ? When I deleted them they have been recreated again. Content of .kde directory is the same as /tmp/ksocket-root Why it needs to be duplicated in /.kde directory? Content of .kde2 is a bunch of empty directories. Why do I need them if I already have /root/.kde2 directory with all configuration files? Please somebody give me clarification on this issue. Lenz, may be you can help? Thank you in advance.
