After I booted suse 7.1 I get this in my xconsole. I don't know what this is or means or how to fix this.... If I try to mount a cdrom with open tray the mount freezes and my CD Driver disappears on me. But the Palm is reading .pdf formats fine here, with the AportisDoc reader. If you go under AbiWord, when you save a document, it gives you a chance to Save As a palm document and the extension is listed as .pdf...at least on my Mandrake box it is... Yep - I work for EMC now. I worked for Data General which was bought by EMC in Fall '99 (I had only been w/ DG for about 3-4 months!). I work in the QA dept. - at first testing DGUX. Now I am testing our new mid-range NAS (network attached storage) product called the IP4700. Who knows where they got that name...?:) The change to EMC has been really good, but it sure has been busy!! And it keeps getting busier....... If you were using pc66 RAM you set it to 1/2 FSB, if you were pc100 you set it to 33. Orignally I was using SuSE's adsl config module in Yast2. Attempts to use Yast1 have ended with Yast1 aborting with no errors. So I am staying away for it. Not sure what to do next. I installed the KDE2.1-Beta on my 7.1 box because I really like 2.1. The pretty icons I just got with my 7.1 are all gone {:-(> Does anybody know the "right" solution for this problem? Steve

filesystem boot probs with 2.4.2 hack?- it's not reiser ist ext2

I'm having problems with loading file systems when trying to boot with the 2.4.2 kernel built from the tarball on the SuSE site. The first problem was that it couldn't read the superblock on the boot file system. I stand corrected as to my earlier comment that the problem was with the resiser FS. It couldn't read /dev/sdb3 which is ext2. I really don't understand this. I am wondering if it could be related to the comments in section 16.4.5 of the 7.1 book. I have never had a problem such as this before, and I only read this discussion a few days ago in the 7.0 book. I must admit I don't understand all of this. Clearly something needs to branch the instruction pointer to the kernel and then read the kernel form the harddrive _before_ the kernel is loaded. That's called 'booting'. I assueme it is getting this far. It even seems to be reading the /etc/fstab to get the filesystem type to mount the partition. It is at that point I get the 'bad file system' error. Has anybody else encoundered this? If I try to build the SCSI drivers as modules I get the expected 'can't find a root file system' error. I guess I can try the recommendaiton of removing the initrd stuff and see if that helps. If I am understanding the documentation correctly, the initrd is mostly for installation. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA, Steve

I may just ignore it for now. I really can't change my drives around anymore. I can't put my Linux drive on one of the motherboard IDE controllers - when I tried that it was not recognized properly. I believe I put it in the first slot of the Ultra 66 card, and I am almost positive it is on there as a master. I was using IDE33 but the problem was my disk arrangement. I happen to have 3 IDE drives and 2 of them are Ultra-ATA. If you re-arrange your drives (I am assuming you have more than 1) so that your Ultra-ATA drive is the master, then check for a jumper on your drive that might be there and say "Master, with non-UATA slave" - make sure you set that jumper and then you will most likely need to reload your OS, or dump it to the new master, whatever you prefer. Or just ignore it.
