A news item just out reported that the US NSA has just released a "security-enhanced" version of Linux as a means of demonstrating capabilities and encouraging this kind of work in the open-source community. See http://www.idg.net/go.cgi?id=393954 and http://nsa.gov/selinux/index.html . Maybe they would like to get away from dependence on Microsoft! Incidentally, because of it's role in assembling a distribution and, potentially, verifying signatures on software components, etc., I'd think that "security assurance" is naturally something that a distributor like SuSE might undertake as a way of distinguishing its product. Thus, the work of verifying the authenticity of source components, re-compiling them, etc., is done once for all. Comments? Peter Hollings

Top in root window?

Hi, Is there a way to display the output of 'top' in the root window, that is, without using a terminal? I'm looking for something similar to root-tail (http://www.goof.com/pcg/marc/root-tail.html) but then for program output instead of file content. I'm using KDE2 and can't get the 'Background Program' background mode in the KDE Control Center working with 'top'. TIA, Martijn

I've never had a problem with stop, restart otoh often fails for me. Note that many of these scripts use killproc, with full path to executable. /etc/rc.d/init.d/* stop not working on SuSE 7.0

Howdy, For some weird reason I cannot stop any services such as mysql or http with /etc/rc.d/init.d/<servicename> stop. If I do it's says "done" but then if you do ps -ef |grep <servicename> it's still running. When I first found it we had a really custom install and I thought maybe I'd messed something up. I just finished reinstalling from scratch, and we have the same problem! One thing that might be causing the problem: our perl coder had to have perl 5.6. Is there eny chance that those init scripts use perl, and the new version is messing it up? I have never had trouble with init scripts before. If perl isn't used can anyone think of any other reason they aren't working? Note that I am doing this as root, so perms shouldn't be a problem. SuSE NOT at Mac World...

I was hoping to see SuSE at Mac World... I would have liked to take a look at what they are doing on the Mac side of things AND hit them up for some shwag!!!! I guess it would be cheaper for them to just send me the T-shirt directly. But I did get my Yellow Dog shirt... Spunk

X resolution

Bugzilla on 6.4--is it possible?

Greetings, I tried to install Bugzilla on 6.4 system and got completely confused. Bugzilla requires a couple of perl modules, namely GD and Chart::Base. GD is required to be version 1.3 and use libgd version 1.8.3. Chart requires GD version higher than 1.2. By default, on 6.4 system GD is 1.2 and libgd is 1.7.3. OK, I grabbed gd and gdlib rpms for 7.0 system and installed them.
