Suse says kernal 2.2.16, XFree86 4.0.2 says kernal 2.0.30

I'm having continued problems trying to configure XFree86 4.0.2 to work with my ATI Radeon Graphics card. When I boot up, the Suse linux 7.0 login prompt greets me with: Welcome to SuSE Linux 7.0 (i386) - Kernal 2.2.16 (tty1) Also, when I do command: uname -r The result is: 2.2.16 Yet, when I do "startx" to start up Xwindow system, the error output log says the following: ____________________________________________ XFree86 Version 4.0.2 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400) Release Date: 18 December 2000 Operating System: Linux 2.0.30 i686 [ELF] Module Loader present (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Sun Jan 21 14:01:41 2001 (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config" Parse error on line 12 of section (null) in file /etc/X11/XF86Config "" is not a valid keyword in this section. (EE) Problem parsing the config file (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile() Fatal server error: no screens found ______________________________________________ Notice that the 4th line says the operating system is Linux 2.0.30 I installed XFree86 from .tgz files downloaded from XFree86.org, out of the libc5 directory. The only guess I have is that maybe I was supposed to d/l the files from the glibc2.2 or glibc2.3 directory, and not the files in the libc5 directory. But this is just a shot in the dark. hardrive install needs inst-img but I can't find it

I looked everywhere, can't find this file, I tried using the inst-img file on SuSE 6.2 but it doesn't have the correct version of YaST. Where can I find the file inst-img ? I have everything from the SuSe web site for Suse 7.0 but no inst-img file. the install program needs this file to do a hard disk install. thanks in advance joe

Netscape 6

Has anyone had any luck installing Netscape 6 from the Netscape site? For linux, the offering I found is a zipped installer, which starts OK but then hangs, at least on 6.4 with kernels 2.2.14 and 2.2.16. I ask because I got Netscape 6 working on a Solaris machine and thought it (mostly) an improvement on 4.76. Any thoughts appreciated. Mounting /usr,/opt.. /var?

Hi, I have another problem with my small network. I have one main computer where I install everything, and smaller computers with only a basic system installed. I mount the /usr and /opt partitions from the main computer at boot time, and most things run equally on all computers. LaTeX, however, needs a file latex.fmt from the /var../texmf directory, so it only runs on the main computer. Are there any other user programs which have the same problem and what is the preferred solution? Mounting /var would surely be silly, but maybe just this texmf directory? Thanks, David.

Digital camera....USB.

I'm probably going to get a digital camera (USB). I want a GOOD one, but not willing to pay an "arm and a leg" for it. Hi JR, Thanks for responding to my post. I tried your suggestion using #45 off the video card database list. Interesting thing happened. The Xwindow system did launch, but all I got was a blank red screen. When I tried moving the mouse, all it did was flicker around the top of the screen. The keyboard ceased to function. I couldn't shutdown the Xwindow system, so I had to just turn the computer off. I know that's not a very good thing to do in Linux, but it was all I could do to get out. Any idea what I might try next. I'd appreciate any help you can give. I'm at my wits end after working on this for 2 weeks. I don't know, I may have to pull this graphics card out and buy an older card that will definitely work under XFree 3.3.6. I just don't know what else to do. Extra Info - Can't compile Nvidia driver

Hello, everyone. I followed a link from someone earlier to a page on Toms Hardware stating that I would need to check my autoconf.h file and make sure that #define CONFIG_SMP 1 was present instead of #undef CONFIG_SMP I changed this line for SMP and tried again to compile the Nvidia 0.9.6 driver from their src.rpm files. This time, instead of compiling and then bombing out when I try to install it, it now won't compile, giving me a whole slew of errors, many of which concern SMP. I searched the SDB and found only five references to SMP, none of which were any help. I even looked in the manual, and that said to make sure kernmods.rpm was installed. I cannot find this rpm anywhere on the CDs, or under the 7.0 tree on the SuSE ftp site. This problem is now much more than not being able to compile the Nvidia driver; it is a problem of not being able to compile an SMP kernel module on a system running an SMP kernel. This is not good. I hope someone can tell me what is missing from my system that I will need to add in order to get this module to compile. My /usr/src/linux is a link to /usr/src/2.2.16-SuSE, but the directory contains no references to a 2.2.16-SMP kernel. This, quite frankly, has me worried. If YaST2 is smart enough to install the SMP kernel, where are the supporting files ? Thanks, Stuart.
