Then perhaps you've got IRQ conflicts between your modem and other devices? Check your BIOS settings for the port your modem is on. If you are interested in details and know how to read C code then have a look at the function get_pid in /usr/src/linux/kernel/fork.c ;-) Eilert [1] Many processes started shortly after the system startup are deamons that will run permanently. Reusing PIDs starting with 300 will in many cases skip most of this processes. [SLE] Permissions in /var/spool/mqueue

What should the perms and ownership be on /var/spool/mqueue be? I think the sendmail upgrade rpm may have changed it. I'm seeing 700 root root. Which is causing problems for non root users. hi all while trying to install sendmail 8.11 to my suse6.4 i accidentally deleted my sendmail(8.9.3) binary which comes with suse. i've tried to find sendmail 8.9.3 in suse-download & suse software but can't find. pls let me know where i can find sendmail 8.9.3-binary. i can't get 8.11 up...so i've to fall back on 8.9.3. thanks in advance tk ===== 0Oo~~:o) Smile! Ok, I mentioned before that some people are waiting anxiously for the ftp to go up if it will ever happen. Now SuSE seems to totally not be interested in this due to 'god knows what reasons'. I mean it is their choice. I still think though the option of an ftp install is part of their service and they should not make us wait 3 months for the ftp just so they sell 3 more copies of their product. I am close to deciding not to buy SuSE anymore simply due to the fact that they refuse to put it up on ftp. One of the largest Linux advantages is that you can get your code in multiple ways; NFS, ftp, CD, DVD. I guess we learned from the Napster ordeal that people have a demand for products and service and if the companies don't provide the products we will provide them ourselves. I wonder if anybody out there like myself got an unthrottled 100 Mbit cable modem hooked up right into the university's backbone and thinks about putting the CDs up for ftp as SuSE seems to have goo in their ears. If SuSE continues to delay the release of a product people want, then I would not be surprised if in the future we got unoffical SuSE CD ftp mirrors popping up all over the net. Maybe they already exist and I am not aware of it. [SLE] YaST and cdrom changes ?

Greetings, I had to take out a cdrom from my system and then YaST doesn't see the remaining ones /dev/scd0 (burner) and /dev/scd1 (cd drive). The one removed was /dev/scd2 and the one I installed SuSE with. How does one update YaST to see /dev/scd1 (which is symlinked to /dev/cdrom) as the default ? Another way of asking my question would have been, what does the phone company need to do to make my DSL connection work? (Bear in mind I know nothing about networking.) My general guess was that my phone line must connect directly to some kind of router in the phone company's 'switchbox' that directs my phone number to the machine that provides me with an IP address etc. The problem is then, if two private individuals (remote wrt each other) want to establish such a link via their phone lines, how do they do it? It seems obvious that there has to be some kind of router that can connect one machine to the phone number, if we assume that the first machine isn't on the internet and so isn't able to resolve IP addresses etc. So my intuition was that without a leased line, such a link would be impossible, unless the phone company made it possible. This intuition seems to be confirmed by the story you refer to. But since the idea was to cut the phone company out altogether... Presumably, of course, the phone companies could enable modem-like xDSL dialup capability if they didn't stand to lose lots of money that way, by allowing phone subscribers to use all the frequencies available on the phone line. Or am I wrong? A much simpler case of my question would have been, given two computers with Alcatel bridges in the same room, what further technology (if any) would be required to connect them (possibly via a third computer) via xDSL? (Nevermind that in that case it would not be necessary to use xDSL.)
