[SLE] Kernel problem

Hi all I've just downloaded the brand new 2.4 pre8 kernel. I configured this like I did the same way I dit with the 2.2.14 kernel. The only new thing I did whas to enable the processor Winchip C6, which I thought I had installed. But When I try to boot the kernel with loadlin: c:\loadlin\loadlin c:\loadlin\bzImage4 root=/dev/hdb11 mem=73278 it doesn't get loaded. Sometimes it hangs in the decompression phase ( the little points on the screen in te 3th row) One time this succeeded, bus the next warnig was bad gzip or magic number. I know loadlin has a sort of debug mode, the -d, or -t flag. I used the -d flag, ant this doesn't give a faulty kernel message o.i.d. What is the right command to compile the kernel? I use make dep clean modules modules_install bzImage followed with the command depmod -a Can anybody give me a cleu? [SLE] strange mail behavior is getting me too

OK, I was playing around with my mail system to see how Nick Zentana's problem was behaving. Earlier today, if I typed "mail zentara" as root, on my localhost, zentara would get mail in /var/spool/mail. Now all of a sudden, all mail goes into /var/spool/mqueue. Even if I specify "mail zentara@localhost" it goes into the outbox mqueue.?????? I reinstalled sendmail and mail, no effect. What file controls this delivery behavior??? How do you access them? If it's from a floppy you can use mcopy -t a:/* . the -t option will convert the line endings as needed. I believe mount has a similar switch, but I can't check it as I'm at work. :-( k. [SLE] singe step boot up & lilo

Hi I tried swapping my modem card from my old 486 to pentium (that does dual boot) So I could go on email with SuSE, but first the Windows 95 would not install the modem card, even from the disk that came with the modem (anyway that is another problem) I thought if I reinstall windows it would sort out the modem card but all it did is lost the dual boot. so I booted up with CD one of Suse, exit from Yast2 as soon as I could, and got into my linux that way, from their I went to KLILO and saved to MBR (master boot record) But now when it dual boots up it shows one "fail" in red, I'm sure that did not appear before. Well, My Pace Solo external won't work ! See my earlier post, I cannot install either 6.4 or 7.0 via yast2 as it gives a red box error message. if I switch off the modem it installs OK, but cannot use yast2 to configure it. I know I can do it in other ways, but why doesn't Yast2 handle the modem ? Well, I'm doing this from memory (and I'm old and slow and at work!), but I imagine YaST2 uses /dev/modem, which is a pointer to something like /dev/tty0, which in DOS terms would be Com1. You don't need to configure your modem using YaST2 however, as I think all it will do is use wvdial as a backend. Try kppp, the settings default to /dev/modem, but you can change that. Otherwise try wvdial directly, it's a commandline program but is very reliable. Check out man wvdial from your xterm. k. Do you not have the handbook? People rarely respond on this list with 'rtfm', but you might make a little more effort... That said, external modems are pretty much plug in and go. I would try kppp first. The only trouble you might run into is to make sure your /etc/resolv.conf has the IP address of your ISP, otherwise you'll connect, but won't be able to browse, etc.. You can easily do this in YaST. In fact it's best to do it in YaST, as seasoned SuSE users all know, YaST has a nasty habit of overwriting 'hand-made' changes! k.
