[SLE] ftpd woes

Hi everyone, I've been running our web server here at work for several weeks, but only discovered yesterday that ftp doesn't work. in.ftpd was running from inetd, but, in an effort to get it working, I've changed it so that proftpd starts at boot time. I can verify(via ps & netstat) that the process is running and that it accepts connections. When a client tries to make an ftp connection, it waits for a long time, then says "connected to 192.168.11.250", waits(and doesn't respond) then gives the message "421 Service not available, connection timed out ...." I'm at my wit's end here. Can anyone help me? I'm running SuSE 6.4 on an HP Kayak. [SLE] MIDI in SuSE 6.4

I've been trying to run some of the software in SuSE 6.4 that use MIDI, like Brahms, Jazz, KMid, RoseGarden, with no luck at all. When for exempel i try to play a midi file in KMid it says: Couldn't open /dev/sequencer Probably there is another program using it. I've understood that MIDI is something which is not a trivial thing to configure in Linux is that true? It seems to be complicated enough to make SuSE support reply with: 'Your enquiry goes beyond the scope of our Installation Support.' I must say that i do not agree with that, i consider a MIDI function as something that ought to be a standard in a serious ('and user friendly' (ever heard that from the SuSE team?)) OS. As a musician i 'have to' use Windows to be able to work with my music (with the immaculate Sibelius software) but i really would love to be able to do that in Linux instead. (Almost every session of an hour or more working with Sibelius in Win98, end with a crash; same thing on two different computers.) With no MIDI in Linux i can't even run Sibelius in VMWare or Wine. [SLE] routing problems -( HELP

Did I say help yet? Help! So I pickup a replacement for my old machine today. Installed SuSE 7.0 via FTP and that went mostly pretty well. I found a bug in Sax2 but other then that nothing major. Now I can't get the thing to plug into the network and work. I've edited route.conf. I've tried everything I can think of but I can't get it to see my network or the internet. I know the card etc are working because I used it to install the OS. So what am I to stupid to have noticed? [SLE] Netscape, dial on demand and local HTTP server

Hi, I have a two-machine network. One is the user's machine, the other is the HTTP server (Apache) and firewall/internet machine. The internet machine uses dial on demand: whenever a user requests a URL from a browser the internet machine dials out (and shuts down Apache of course). The problem is this: I am not able to access the local HTTP server with Netscape . If I point Netscape to the server's URL (http://cygnus/) it freezes and waits till a dial-out connection is made, which is what I don't want when accessing the local server. However when I use KFM (KDE 1.1.2) I do not get this problem and I can happily connect to my local HTTP server. My resolv.conf tells to search the local net first for an IP address ('search myshack.nl'), then contact a DNS 'outside'. It looks like Netscape does not bother searching the local domain and goes straight to my ISP's DNS. Does anybody know what is happening here? [SLE] Internet conection sharing (router?)

Hello list, I have a two box home lan, one windows, one linux,etc. Windows box is 192.168.0.2, linux box is 192.168.0.3 or 192.168.0.1 when booted also to windows. Would like the linux box to be a router or gateway(?), so both machines can hook to the 'net at the same time, ala internet conection sharing. Is this possible and simple? I have another NIC I can put in the linux box...what ip address should it get? I am also using Mason firewall on the linux box, however I believe it is wide open at this point. We are on a dial-up w/ an ISP (yes, it sucks), so I don't feel real vulnerable. Someday I'll dive into that. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is this actually a case for ipmasq? If so, I could use some help there, as well. [SLE] need help with sendmail and relaying

I'm trying to get sendmail to accept our domain for relaying. But not matter what i do it just will not accept them. This is a suse6.1 system if that helps. i have this in /etc/mail/access macn.bc.ca RELAY 209.52.241 RELAY and this in /etc/mail/relay-domains macn.bc.ca 209.52.241 We have a terminal server and it is mainly the ones that use that are having the problems. do i have to enter yet of those address in one of those files or can one wild card it? This all worked before we changed ip numbers but all the domains stayed the same. Hello, all. This is largely reposted from a mail I sent last night; I think I had some problems w/ my ISP, since it bounced back at me. I have several SuSE boxes doing various things. I am interested in being able to update any box from one server via NFS. Right now, I run into problems when yast is ready for the next cd, I have to kill the nfs server, umount the cdrom, put in the next one, mount the drive, and restart nfsserver. Not a very ideal situation. How would one go about making the files from the six CD's available from one directory, say /pub/suse and all updates available from /pub/suse-update? I can retrieve the updates now using wget. But how do I make a single 'image', for lack of a better term, that I can use to change configs, etc. on any of the SuSe boxes? [SLE] mail-related questions

I am currently looking into switching over to Linux as my desktop OS. This means that I will have to setup fetchmail and procmail to handle the collection and sorting of my email. Most of it I know already, but I have just a few questions. My system is SuSE 6.3. I will probably be using Pine, since I already know (and like) it, but I might also want to look into Mutt or even one of the GUI MUAs. 1) is there anything special I have to take into consideration, when I create the .fetchmailrc ? Will a standard line like the following work? (so that procmail gets the mail after fetchmail is done with it.) poll server.isp.dk proto pop3 user okh pass xxxxx is ole here 2) Will the mail treated by procmail be readable in any mail-client? (Most importantly in Pine) 3) Do I have to do anything to sendmail to be able to send mail using several different email addresses? If you can think of a problem I have not considered, do not hesitate to let me know (and if you can also give the solution, it's even better.) [SLE] Resolving IRQ conflict?

My home machine is not cooperative on a couple of issues. It has a PCI modem, and an ISA network card, and it can't find either. Not under Linux. For the modem, it's simple. lspci tells me that both the modem and the usb support wants to have IRQ 3. The modem is IRQ 3 under Windows as well, and seems quite insistent about that number. Is there any way for me to reset what IRQ number the usb device should use? As for the network card, I don't have even this much information. Windows detects it as NE2000-compatible, Linux can't find it, and including the ne2000 module manually does nothing. "No such device". I can't even find ut pre-installation. Help would be greatly appreciated. Running Suse 6.4. And in case you hadn't guessed - no, I'm not much of a hardware man... [SLE] Canvas7 in SuSE 6.4

I installed Canvas7(beta 3) last night with no apparent problems. I downloaded the rpm and used kpackage to install it. The install seemed to go flawlessly, and the first time I started the program I was able to register it w/ no problems. However, as soon as I try to actually use it, everything goes to hell. I clicked on "File / Open" to try & look at some example file or something, and the whole Canvas window started blinking like crazy. I finally had to reboot. The next time I tried it, it didn't blink, but just locked up tight. I was able to kill it this time from an xterm. Anyone else using Canvas 7 ever seen a problem like this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a SupraExpress 336i PnP Voice Modem which I know works in Linux, the problem is that I don't remember how it was configured and the isapnp.conf file is long gone. (I have two modems installed in the platform, Win95 uses a 56k pci modem and I didn't have Win95 find the SupraExpress so I can't check the address and IRQ via Win95). If I do isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf I get: Board 1 has Identity a5 00 07 5a 98 81 13 b0 4e: SUP1381 Serial No 481944 [checksum a5] Board 2 has Identity b6 ff ff ff ff 80 71 93 04: ADS7180 Serial No 1 [checksum b6] which are also two of the boot messages (Board 1 is the modem). If I try query modem is the setup srceens of kppp I get the message that the modem is busy. I tried ttyS1 through ttyS3 with no success, always modem is busy. I'm sure that I'm missing something fundamental, but the fine manual has not been any help.. The situation is not critical, but rather annoying at this point. Any help will be appreciated. As a corollary issue, where is seyon in v64.? It doesn't seem to be installed. Thanks in advance. Stephen P. [SLE] aic7xxx patches for SuSE?

Running 6.4. The scsi aic7xxx driver in 6.4 is rev 5.1.25. The latest from what I can find (from http://people.redhat.com/dledford/ ) is 5.1.31. There are only patches available. No one package. My question is, has anyone applied these patches to the SuSE kernel (lx_suse) sources successfully? Or better yet does anyone know where to get the full sources that work with the SuSE sources?
