[SLE] X Windows on a PPC 7200/120

I was wondering if I could get 16 bit color @ 832x624 using a Macintosh 16" Color Display? Every time I try to switch from the 8 bit I have to trash my install and start over. Looking at a bit mapped screen is getting to be a real drag. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance. [SLE] Printer Problems

I'm a relative newbie to Linux and have had a lot of problems getting my H-L LaserJet5L to work with SuSE v6.0 (which I have the complete package). I used the LaserJet4 driver, set to 600x600 dpi, letter paper,etc., in Apsfilter when I did the installation. If I turn the printer on at the same time as the computer, it feeds several pages of blank paper (until I shut the printer off). If I try to print, I get several pages of what looks like the code for a postscript page. I do have ghostscript installed. I've read through all the pages in the SuSE database and in the manual that came with the package, as well as the section in "Running Linux" (O'Reilly), and have done what I can with the printer turned off, and the setup seems to be right. Has anyone installed a LJ5L successfully? If so, I'd appreciate a suggestion or two. Also, I have a SCSI CD-ROM drive which will not boot automatically to do an upgrade or new installation. If I boot the v6.0 and insert say a v6.3 or v6.4 CD, what is the setup software called? Thanks for the help! Hi Folks, A friend and I would be grateful for good light thrown on the following. He has been having trouble (on an "alternative" Red Hat based system, kernel 2.2.14, from CrazyPenguin) with NFS, in that file-systems mounted onto the root file-system on the server are not being exported (or at any rate not being seen by the client). E.g. if /dev/hdc2 on SERVER is mounted on SERVER:/home, and SERVER exports SERVER:/ (the full root directory), and on his CLIENT machine he does 'mount -t nfs SERVER:/ /B' then he finds nothing under /B/home. A query to our local Linux Users list linux-users(a)mcc.ac.uk brought the following reply from the knowledgeable Dave Gilbert: What you are seeing here is actually the normal way that NFS mounts work on most systems; what you used to do on RH5.2 was highly unusual. I think it is probably that RH6.2 is using the kernel NFS daemon and RH5.x was using the user space NFS daemon. The user space daemon sees the filesystems just like users see it so that exporting / gives you everything. The kernel daemon probably opperates like the NFS servers on Solaris, SunOS and most other *ix's; they actually export file systems not directory trees; so exporting / just gets you an export of the root filesystem not anything mounted under it. We hadn't met this "kernel NFS daemon" before, so we're now intrigued. We've now had a look in the NFS-HOWTO, where (Section 10) there is some interesting information about "knfsd" (the kernel nfsd, presumably as mentioned by Dave), especially to the effect that, unless the kernel has been put together by people who really know what they're doing (Red Hat >6.0 and SuSE > 6.1 are mentioned), knfsd won't work. In particular: 10.2. The server The nfs server demon under Linux 2.2 and later is called "knfsd". It is tricky to set it up. You have to figure this out all by yourself, or stick to what SuSE, Red Hat and others are releasing in the way of 2.2 kernel packages. Sorry. You can still use the old nfsd under Linux 2.2 though. It's slow but easy to set up. Now, I'm using SuSE-6.3 (kernel 2.2.13) and not having any of my friends problems. On SERVER I just export "/ (rw)" and CLIENT sees the lot. This is what he'd like to be able to do too. What about starting up rpc.nfsd? Can this over-ride rpc.knfsd, or does the latter have to be stopped (incidentally, though his 'ps -aux' shows that rpc.nfsd is running, it doesn't show rpc.knfsd). I see that there is a bunch of things: /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/ChangeLog /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/INSTALL /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/KNOWNBUGS /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/NEW /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/README /usr/doc/packages/knfsd/TODO /usr/man/allman/man8/rpc.knfsd.8.gz /usr/man/man8/rpc.knfsd.8.gz and /usr/sbin/rpc.knfsd on my SuSE-6.3, so maybe some reading to do. But since it seems that SuSE have this working properly (i.e. the kernel has presumably "been put together by people who really know what they're doing"), I'm asking the SuSE list for clarification about this way of doing things. Ay comments or discussion which would help us to understand the issues would be most gratefully received. Sorry to be asking a SuSE list about problems with a non-SuSE system, but since this is new stuff and of significant interest, and since SuSE seem to know how to get it right, I thought it was well worth raising for everyone's interest. [SLE] sound card troubles

I need help getting my sound card to work on my SuSE 6.3. The history.. I found my card on SuSE hardware support database, it is supported. It is a Creative Labs Ensonic and it uses driver ES1371. I followed the "step by step guide" to getting it configured and loaded as a module and it didnt work. I tested it by using the lsmod command and it wasnt listed, so I assumed I didnt do something right, even though I am pretty sure I followed the instructions well. I decided then to make xconfig and build the driver right into my kernel. No go..ie, I know the new kernel works becuase I also configured it for a network card and that worked when I used the new kernel. However I still have no sound. ps. The tried testing the sound in both KDE and GNOME. I did configure KDE for sound. Why no sound when the driver is right in the kernel? I hate to to admit this but I know the sound card works becuase it works in Windows 98 on my duel boot machine. Im running out of ideas here, any ideas. Hi!! I have a question,but I am not sure I can explain it.When I install a rpm-file,by yast,it said it couldn't find libglib.so.But I have found it,but in a different place.Yast think it is in /usr/lib,but I have it in /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib.Now I wonder why? I have only used rpm,and I thought they was right.Am I wrong. By the way,can I copy the files,or how can I fix it.The problem is shlibs5,from suse 6.4.it install the files in i486-linux-libc5,and then can't the other software,I want to install,find it. Am I the only one who wonder over this? Please,explain for me,and maybe I need to build my own stuff,instead of trusting SuSE? I'm far from being a specialist in these matters, but I once wrote an interactive score editor in curses mode (using a special ASCII language of mine to represent the score, surely nothing very interesting nowadays :-). Without having looked at any similar tool, it seemed natural that I wanted to "hear" the score right in the editor, it was absolutely evident to me that it was something useful from the start. If in my great naivety, I thought doing it, I wonder why people who are really serious in the matter do not provide similar features. Let me chat about this a bit, it's fun. I made a few commands to play the current, or a few selected bars, right away, and also added a mode that was playing sounds one by one, while being entered (the hear catches most coding errors right away, it was useful). I had no sound card on the machine, so I just reprogrammed the pitch and duration of the console beep (BEL) before each note. Absolutely no sound quality, of course, but quite enough to avoid coding errors. For multi-voice rendering, I was time-sharing the console beep between the voices, giving arpeggios all along. Far from extra-ordinary, and getting on the nerves somewhat, but once again, quite effective at debugging a score efficiently. Only later, my few pre-testers convinced me to add MIDI file output, and I studied MIDI file format to make them happy. It took me only a few days overall, this was not that difficult to do. They also wanted sound support when audio devices were available, like on Sun on SGI stations, and this has been much more work for me to speedily generate the waves for all voices. I had special problems with frequency aliasing and annoying clicks, and had to learn how to handle incomplete cycles and non-rational frequencies, and all this, using extremely simple wave shapes. When I later found Timidity, which is extremely more powerful than what I ever did or dreamed of, I was completely stunned in admiration. Oh, and by the way, Timidity is on SuSE 6.4 as well, for my greatest pleasure. It also worked very nicely for me, after I merged in some previous configuration I had for an older Timidity. > Lilypond just helps you notate and create a midi file, right? Lilypond is aiming high quality score printing. Importing or exporting MIDI files is rather secondary in the project, even if both are possible. I only tried exportation, but even saying this is exaggeration, as MIDI exportation occurred automatically as a sub-product of the generated score. As I told in an earlier message, I tried Denemo which compiled and worked very quickly for me, no pain, no fuss. Denemo has an option to play the full score. It launches a subprocess for this, but yet, you do not leave the editor. [SLE] Upgrading from 6.2 full to 6.4 evaluation?

Hi folks, Sorry if this is a newbie or recurrent question, i'm new to the list. Anyway, here it goes: I have had a full 6-CDs SuSE 6.2 version running on my machine for quite a few months, and i think it's about time to upgrade. However, rather than purchasing a full 6.4 or 7.0 version, i would like to wait for 7.1 or something like that to come up because i'd like it to have a kernel 2.4.x, KDE 2.0 and that kind of stuff. Then i was thinking that, in the meantime, maybe i could upgrade to an evaluation 6.4 version in order to at least update the basic packages for security fixes and things like that. Would this work? I think so, but I was wondering if anyone could see any downside other than the obvious not having the non-in-evaluation packages updated. Also, could i use the 'Update from an older version' setup options considering that the old one is a full version and the new one is an evaluation one? Any feedback appreciated. Hi, I want to upgrate my suse6.4 kernel to 2.2.16. I already download lx_suse.rpm, is there others file need to download?
