[SLE] cable modem security.

Hello all I'm intalling Cable modem internet connection... I was just wondering is there any risk on security even if most port are close.. known services like telnet ftp and finger are stop..since my computer running SuSE 6.4 would be online for long period. And also do any body know a program is linux that is capable of detection for example if I have be scan.. or is some one try to break in. How do I change where the file /var/log/messages or to ask linux to log all messages to some where else.. Thanks for any help. ===== ,. \\|// - ? [SLE] Unwanted Reboot

SuSE v6.4, new installation. Suddenly, immediately after I got the system to recognize my ethernet card starting XWindows with startx forces a reboot into MSDOS. I had successfully configured XWindows with sax. Very annoying, to say the least. I'd appreciate pointers towards a solution to the problem. Thanks in advance. Stephen P. [SLE] Prophet II 64 meg and X / Suse 6.4

Sorry if this has been rehashed. My system : Suse 6.4, Dell Precision 420 with duel Pentium 3 866, 512 megs of RDRAM, GeForce 32 meg DDR card by Hercules. Suse 6.4 installed and X runs fine with the SVGA server. However, I upgraded to a Hercules Prophet II Geforce 2 (GTS) 64 meg card, now upon starting X I get a garbled display. Sax runs, but when I try to open any X windows (testing, etc.) I get a garbled display with garbles all consoles - I have to hard reboot to get Linux back. I am using the standard 6.4 X / KDE release, I did try upgrading to X 4.0 but that didn't help (I am not sure if I even installed it correctly - I am a Linux newbie). Can anyone help me here? [SLE] Tape Drive

I have a Seagate Travan 4/8GB SCSI tape drive which boots up as st0. I have been trying to use KDat to backup the system. When I bring up the KDat window and click on mount drive, it says there is no tape in the drive. There is a tape inserted in the drive. When a tape needs format, after formatting it will indicate that there is a tape installed. I can not get it to recognize that a formated tape is inserted in the drive. The KDat help isn't much help on this one. Other than the preference button on the KDat window, I can find no configuration file for KDat Have preferences set to: tape size = 4GB tape block size = 512 bytes tape device = dev/st0 tar command = /bin/tar Would like to get this working. Any help or suggestions would be appricated. Both suse and redhat are configured in pretty much the same way - system vinitialzation almost all startup scripts are found in /etc/rc.d/init.d/ example - you need to restart sendmail after editing the access.db file redhat - /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart suse - /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart as for certification - yes there is a RHCE (red hat certified engineer) cert available here in America, but I dont know anyone who has it or plans to get it. There is also the Sair/GNU linux certification which is independent of distributions. I do know a few people who have gotten this, although they already held jobs where they used linux. I disagree with your statement that redhat is better than suse. I find suse to be much better "out of the box" than redhat. Yast is a very good config tool. much better than linuxconf. I manage a small isp that has 11 servers - 6 suse, 5 redhat. I just like suse because everything is there (except openssh here in the states). With redhat you have to go and download a bunch of stuff after installing. Also, redhat uses that god awful disk druid thing to partition the drives and I hate their installer - both console and X versions. You posted earlier about comparing windows with linux. While a lot of people talk about linux replacing windows on the desktop, I doubt it is going to happen. I use linux as my desktop os because I can do more with it than I can with a windows os, but most people want to just surf, get email, watch a video, listen to music or play a game. While linux can do all of this, it does take some finesse to get it all working. Some distro's are gearing themselves more toward the desktop market - mandrake, caldera, corel, storm - and that is cool. where the real difference between windows and linux lies is in the support and development. Linux is constantly being developed, you can get new kernels, new programs, patches, updates, etc. almost daily. With linux, when a bug is found, a patch will almost certainly be available within a day or two. Windows has a much longer turnaround on bug fixes and updates - example windows 2000, which was almost a year late. [SLE] Toshiba Laptop ?

Hi all, I just gave my wife an old Toshiba Satellite 220CS and she's asked me two questions that I can't find. Does anyone know: #1 How to turn the power off in DOS? Right now I have to fire up WP98 to shut the power off. #2 Just for fun I installed Monkey Linux on it. Monkey defaults to a US keyboard BUT it does not match the keys on this Laptop. Does this mean that a laptop keyboard is different from a US keyboard or perhaps I have an English board? If so, how do I tell if it's an English or US board? One last question, does anyone know if there is a webb site where I can d/l a manual for this laptop? TIA!!!
