Sorry - I run out of ideas at this point. All I can suggest is that you do a full configure of the kernel and recompile it then retry making the Alsa drivers. I usually set "Set version information on all symbols for modules" to Y which could help you here. [SLE] username@bin:~> after login, why? Let someone read this!

Hi guys; I have never seen this before SuSE 6.4. Whenever I login I get username@bin:~> as the prompt instead of username@hostname:~> for both root and others. When I used YaST1 for installation, it set the right hostname that I gave to the system. But, now I installed with YaST2 and I get the wrong hostname. I checked /etc/hosts, /etc/HOSTNAME and everything is right everywhere. The only think I suspected was when I check the shells in User Manager, they all have /bin/..., which I didn't mess up. Now the problem is all programs report the hostname of my machine as "bin" which isn't right. This annoys me e.g. when installing new tarballs or programs saying unknown host. This's standalone machine. Does anyone know where "bin" is hardwired into SuSE 6.4 system? Grahm, Each of the items you mentioned seem like good choices but I do have a couple suggestions you may want to check for more choices, if you haven't already. :I'm going to use an 700MHz Athlon, but I'm not sure about mb, currently looking at an :ASUS K7M or K7V (which is better?) or a Gigabyte GA-7VX While it has not been out all that long you may also want to consider Abit's KA7 or KA7-100. [SLE] Problems with SuSE 2.2.16 kernel

I noticed the 2.2.16 kernel out on ftp.suse.com and decided to take it for a spin (the EIDE kernel). It booted fine but the system ground to a halt after firing up a few applications. Needless to say, I went back to 2.2.14 immediately. The following is the kernel log from my messages file. At first I thought it was a VMware problem, but if you look at the last two log entries, the problems reoccur when VMware isn't running. Has anybody tried 2.2.16 and experienced similar problems? [SLE] Linux vs. the rest of the world

I have read with a great deal of interest some recent threads about the relative merrits of Linux and some other operating systems. Various arguments have been put forward about the need to read and Bills way of making us work. I have recently (fairly successfully) installed and configured SuSE 6.4 on an existing Win98 box. This is not my first foree into Unix and Linux, I have been a Unix developer and user for over 10 years and have installed a much older linux envornment a few years ago. I think installing and running a Linux environment is not like running Win98. It is infinitely more complex, and the help and hand holding is much more patchy. I think Linux works well for the hardware that people have written drivers for and is popular and well tested. In windows if the driver for your hardware is not included in the OS then the harware supplier will give you one and support it. This just isn't the case for Linux. Having said all that, I don't believe a Linux based network is any more complex to configure and administer that an NT based one, and it is a lot more stable and robust. It is, like anything, a case or horses for courses. Linux will not take on the MS brigade in the home or even the office workstation market. If people are trying to use it in this sphere (creating PowerPoint presentations, etc) they are destined for failure. As a backend server, administered by people who know what they are doing, it is second to none, in my opinion. I had problems with configuring sendmail, and even the might Yast didn't seem to get things quite right. What worked for me is a Perl script called "install-sendmail", written by Donncha O Caoimh at the Cork Linux Users Group. The URL for this great program is http://cork.linux.ie/projects/install-sendmail/ Current version appears to be 5.3.1. Don't run it as root! After installing the config files it produces, (and possibly tweaking my .fetchmailrc), I just use "fetchmail" to get mail from my ISP's pop3 server, and use "sendmail -q" to send out any outgoing messages. Now I use 'fetchmail' to receive mail and Pine to view (and reply, send, etc...) mail. Ironically, I applied the method above to my Ultra-1 (Sparc, running Solaris 8 and behind my Linux machine which acting as a gateway/proxy), surprisingly enough its works very well. Also, there is no need to issue 'sendmail -q', e-mail immediately sent :) Must be the way Sendmail is setup in Solaris 8 (Who knows as long as it works :) Anywho, thank you all for your responses and have a wonderful week. Is anybody out there - the list has gone quiet even after SuSE fixed their mail problem I'm getting ready to build a new PC and would appreciate comments on the following: I'm going to use an 700MHz Athlon, but I'm not sure about mb, currently looking at an ASUS K7M or K7V (which is better?) or a Gigabyte GA-7VX Matrox G400, ATI Xpert98, or 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 - this isn't for gaming, I want a solid, fast, well supported card for X, I'm favoring the Matrox because it works well with X. A 20GB Western Digital - most of it to SuSE Sound card, not sure. [SLE] Netscape attachments

Hi, I usually send and get attached files when using Netscape as mail agent. The problem is how to get rid of them once these messages are saved in their folders because they end up flooding the disk. The only way I've seen is to edit the message as new, detach the files and save the message, but it then stays in the Drafts folder. This is not what I intend, I just want to delete the attachment in the original message. Is there an easier way to delete attachments in Nestcape mail ? Thanks. -- Dr. Luis A.
