[SLE] problems with network card!!

Hi folks, well maybe you already know me because of all the dumb questions I ask here. But I really don't have anyone else to ask. So Please I ask for your help . I have an @Home connection to the internet, and I inatalled SuSE 6.1 on my computer. I put all the data provided for the company in the setting for the net. I get this from the dmesg command ----- tulip.c:v0.90 10/20/98 becker(a)cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov eth0: Macronix 98715 PMAC at 0x2400, 00 80 c6 f8 3e c0, IRQ 11. ------- So, the card is recognized. I guess that means that the card is recognized but the interface can't get up correctly. Therefore anything to configurate it is not going to work. any suggestions about this? By the way I installed redhat in anothe partition and the result from "ifconfig" is exactly the same. [SLE] Virtual Hosts

Hello, I am a bit new to this so bare with me! I have set up apache and it is working fine, but I have now tried to configure a name based virtual host for a second site I am putting up and I still just get served the main page. when I execute httpd -S the host shows up as configured. Can anyone point me in the right direction? [SLE] Sound for Intel 810 chipset

Hi, I was able to install Suse Linux 6.3 on my Intel P III processor on a 810 chipset board. I tried to configure sound on my m/c but to no avail. Does OSS or ALSA support 810 chipset integrated sound card?? The sound card is recognised in Windows 95 as a SoundMax integrated digital sound card. How can i go about configuring sound on my m/c?? [SLE] any clues re kdevelop

One of the more interesting toys in my KDE environment is kdevelop. I'm about two-thirds of the way seriously looking into some kind of IDE for a project I've been hacking at since 1996. The bad thing about kdevelop is that it uses its own editor or emacs. I've been using vi ever since Bill Joy wrote it and am pretty much stuck. Does anybody know where to stick in the lines for viper so that the emacs with kdevelop will use viper? thanks muchly, gary -- Gary D. Hi all, I've just installed Suse 6.4 .. all i want this machine to do.. is connect to my ISP on demand and be a packet filtering firewall for my Lan. YAST2 seems to have a very basic ISDN setup module... SuSe detects my Zyxel TA 128 as an Unknown modem... Can someone please get me started on this .. and on ISDN4linux ? [SLE] partitioning problem

I had something similar happen to me when installing. What you have to do is boot by floppy in DOS, then run fdisk, "remove" the offending partition, then put it back as a DOS partition. If you want to keep it as DOS, then reformat that partition, and you should be in business! Suse should acknowledge it whether it is a DOS partition or no, Windows is just persnikety on acknowledging it if it isn't formatted a certain way...the suse yast software just looks for partitions. hi all, I have installed XF40 using 2 gfx cards, one Riva128 and one matrox mill. Very Nice, i must say, Xinerama also works fine, But my problem is: My TvCard "Hauppauge blabla", which usually works just fine, has quit working. I tried this with kernel 2.2.15 and 2.4. I know that this card is functional. After loading the appropriate modules and watching the successful output on F9, and firing up kwintv or xawtv, I only get sound, no picture. when i start kwintv i get, among the startup messages, the note, that dga is non-present. I use a Toshiba 460 CDX; its a 166MMX/32MB RAM/2MB CT video chip/2.1GB hdd. Bios dates back to 1996/97. Split partitions approximately 1.2GB for Win98 and the rest for Linux. I've had Linux on my "baby" for about 4 months now. I tried Redhat 6.1 but it took 3 weeks of messing about with XFree/XF86Config/LinuxConfig to get anything resembling a decent 800x600 screen display, and even then I could only manage 256 colours. And the sound quality was absolutely awful. I then slapped Mandrake 7 over the top of Redhat (just told it to upgrade) and found that Lothario made the job a lot easier, I'm now running it with 16K colours and the display is better than under Win98 (which I *must* have - not my choice - for my work). The sound config was a dream compared to Redhat 6.1 and produced excellent renditions of my MP3s. Toshiba also provide a set of laptop utilities, to run under Linux, there is a link for it on the laptop site; and SuSE also include the Tosh utilities on the full distro of 6.4. I'm about to take Mandrake off the laptop and install SuSE 6.4 tomorrow (as it's a public holiday, here in England). If anyone with a Tosh 460 wants a copy of my XF86Config, let me know and I'll happily email it. And I'd better post it off to the laptop site too :-) I keep forgetting too. You don't have to buy an all singing, all dancing, latest bells and whistles laptop to install Linux, my baby is nearly 3 years old and it was quite happy to run Linux, albeit a bit slow comapred to my main machine, an Athlon 500 with 256MB RAM. Perhaps you could ask a friend with a laptop to let you borrow it (back up everything first though) and see if it is suitable for your needs. Just my two pence worth. [SLE] Printing configuration

Hi, I am using linux Suse 6.4 and have a Epson 600 Color local printer configured with yast. I can print perfectly with most applications, but I can't print pdf files neither with the pdf reader xpdf nor with acroread from series "pay". Apsfilter simply infomrs me that job xxxxx cannot be printed. I would be grateful to you if you could help. Regards. Firstly I want to make it clear that I am a Linux advocate and want it to become an alternative to Windows. And it will, Linux is becoming a very usable OS for the general public. The support is unbelievable. BUT... Linux has its shortcomings. It still needs another year or so development before you can walk into EVERY PC store and be able to choose a Linux PC in very much the same way you have the choice of Windows and Macs. Now, Windows in all its incarnations has its shortcomings aswell, but it is a mainstream product. It won't go away tomorrow. Now, imagine people coming from Windows and going to Linux. They are in the same boat. What does that say about Linux then? If you say NT isn't perfect - then Linux isn't neither. In work I work with both Linux and NT. And they coexist great. I don't need to put NT down in order to make Linux look better. There is far too much ANTI MICROSOFT in ALL Linux chatrooms/mailing lists. But where would we be without it? I bet the vast majority of the people on this list started off with a DOS machine. Ok, you have MS DOS, PC DOS and DR DOS but the fact of the matter is that MS DOS one out. Ok, you say the marketing was brilliant... but MS took the PC market by storm. What was available at that time? Not very much. And I agree, if Linux came out then then we will all be using Linux machines now... but it didn't happen like that. Face it - the fact is it DID NOT happen like that. Get used to it. Linux has improved on areas of OSes that we've loved to "hate". So it is fair to say, this - Windows is on every desktop because people know how to use it - from whatever their background and technical expertise (or lack thereof). How it ended up on their PC is another matter and something which goes into marketing and not technicallity. They know how to use it because they have grown up with it. I'm surely not the only one on this list who grew up with DOS5/6.x/Windows3.x/Win9x/NT and am making a transition to Linux. Why am I making that transition? Not because I hate Microsoft. Not because I have to reboot Windows everytime I install something. But because I want to be able to do things I can't with Windows. In the same light, I still use Windows because there is a lot which I can't do with Linux. I can see Linux only getting better and better - it happens that way. When the Linux world gets an environment that ALL walks of life can use, because, lets face it - Linux is still at the moment on your PC because you are technically interested in it (or it is part of your job)and can see it as the way forward - then, and only then, we will see PC store's staff demonstrating this superior alternative. It isn't there yet. Desktop PCs need an interface that my Gran can use. If it doesn't pass this grade then it won't go mainstream. Gnome and KDE are striving in this area, but why don't we all use them - because it isn't even up to scratch for use more technically adept people, let alone the average Joe Bloggs. The day Microsoft ends up in a museum I can stop writing emails like this. I'm fed up of the Microsoft v. Linux debate. I'm fed up of people saying "I get forced to use NT" or "I won't use it because it is Microsoft". Grow up. It is on your desktop because there are more people in the world than yourself. It won't happen overnight the change from MS to Linux. But whilst it is happening, get on with life and enjoy yourself. Hit that Start button as many times as you like and wonder why there is a shutdown command on it - but don't complain to Microsoft - just help develop Linux a lot further. Then let the devlopers of the Linux world get on with their work in producing the next big OS - because then we can all live happily ever after. 1. Note that /etc/wvdial.conf has a line "Idle Seconds = 180". "Idle Seconds" should simply be "Idle". YaST (actually wvdialconf?) needs to be changed to set this properly. 2. Greets, Running SuSE 6.3 and having some issues with wvdial. I have users setup through Yast and they are enabled to use the modem. I can use wvdial with a user.. sign off come back later and try wvdial and get a permission error. Then have to login as root type chmod a+rwx /dev/ttyS1 then the user can use wvdial again.. this happens about 60% of the time. It seems to be almost random.. it is not always that when I reboot I need to change the mode.. and it is not always that after one successful use I have to change the mode. Basically to start if anyone has heard of this issue.. would like some help.. if not - which config file would change the permission attributes of the /dev/tty* files? Hello LINUX freaks, is there anybody who can tell me how to get outlook express to send email to mail linux box? I am already able to recieve email via outlook express from my linux box, but now i 'd like to send email via my linux box to the WWW. Everytime I try to send an eMail outlook reports: "Relaying denied"! [SLE] Will IDE and SCSI work together with SuSE?

An Adaptec 29160 that I bought for one of my (older) FreeBSD platforms didn't fit. It probably will fit into the new PC that I'm installing SuSE on. This new system is fairly limited for my needs and I'd like to add some SCSI devices.
