[SLE] Windowmaker under GNOME?

Yesterday I was experimenting (aka playing-around) with GNOME in a test login and tried to bring up the WindowMaker manager. Zero luck.... I use ctwm here and am looking for another wm that may have better devel tools or some kind of integrated development environment. I've poked around with wmaker here (FBSD), and it looks good. So why would it be missing from my SuSE distribution? I installed virtually everything. Do I need to run ``wmakerconf'' by hand first? Has anyone else bumped into this? thanks, gary -- Gary D. [SLE] Help with ipchains

Hi, I'm using ipchains and I'm masquerading my internal LAN. All working fine, so far. I want to allow access to a server running on a given port on an internal machine. So it would seem that I need to allow that port into the firewall, and also forward that port to the internal machine on the port where the server is running. I'm a bit confused about how to do this, can anyone help? This is what seems to be needed to allow access in and out of the firewall machine: # Allow access to that port on the firewall ipchains -A input -i $EXTERNAL_INTERFACE -p tcp \ -d $MYIPADDR $SERVER_PORT -j ACCEPT -l ipchains -A output -i $EXTERNAL_INTERFACE -p tcp \ -s $MYIPADDR $SERVER_PORT -j ACCEPT -l What I'm unclear on is how to write the forward rule, if that's what I need, to forward the port on the firewall machine to the port on the internal machine. I'm not sure if I can "simply" write a ipchains -A forward rule or if I need to use something like ipmasqadm in addition to ipchanis. Calling all gnome fans!! I pulled of the rpms for the latest gnome release from helixcode. I am running suse 6.4 but support says 6.3 packages should work (which is what the helixcode is packaged for). When I try to install the package, I get dependency errors for libjpeg.so.6; I already have libjpeg.so.62 so I added a simlink in /usr/lib from .6 to .62 Didn't work! Any ideas? TIA, Adi Gadwale. Boot SuSE in run level 2 (NOT runlevel 3) Log in as root and run gdm from the command line. Does this fix the problem? Thought so!! Not ideal, but its the way I have to get it working on my machine!! Mike, The short answer to your question will be something like, "mount /zip," or "mount /tmp/zip," depending on what you are calling it or will call it, but my hunch is that you need more than that! Go to the "HOW_TO" pages in the SuSE help system that comes with the distro. The Zip disk how-to there is excellent. Even I was able to install my ATAPI Zip disk properly and get it up and running without much trouble by using its instructions and those provided with the hardware by Iomega. As I recall, the worst of it was making a new kernel so I'd have SCSI support, and that was mainly inexperience getting in my way. (I plead the fifth on exactly what I kept doing wrong!) I'm away from my Linux box at the moment, but take a look at that and if you have any further questions, feel free to ask. I do have notes on what I had to do. [SLE] Netscape updates screwing up plugins

Why is it that every time I update Netscape from SuSE's site it trashes my plug-ins and all? Getting to the point where I don't wanna ever update again. I don't think it is just a qmail problem. I have been having issues w/ people griping (justifiably) at me because of this 'Sender' field. But I am not using qmail, or sendmail, or anything (yet) I have been using Netscape Messenger, and that's it. No MTA involved. but I get these darned Sender fields injected in my messages using my local user name. And for those who want to tell me to edit 'Preferences', 'Mail', 'Identity', I have. Nowhere in there does it contain 'monte'. It has my email address. Period. So the problem is coming in somewhere else (in Netscape, or whatever). Sorry if I seem a little touchy on this, but I got several off-list emails from people who didn't read my earlier posts, then pointed out what I already had done, and (this is what burns me) did it using a bogus email address. Grrr... I am setting up my email & news system this week and going back to mutt and slrn! At least there I have more control over my headers! This email _shouldn't_ have a weird sender field, as I am sending it from Yahoo!'s web mailer. As an aside, is there a good way (using procmail, or whatever) to recycle my old emails from ~/nsmail/ into my new mailbox for mutt? Also, I believe I am not getting all the posts to this group. I see messages in GeoCrawler archives that I haven't seen in the mail I received, and I get followups to posts that I never saw either. WTF? [SLE] Flash plug-in keeps breaking...

I get it working, then after a while, it stops working and the plug-in pulldown won't allow me to set a plug-in under edit > preferences > navigator > applications. I'm using Netscape 4.73. I've installed libflashplayer.so and Shockwave Flash.class in both home/mole/.netscape/<plugins> and in opt/netscape/plugins It works as root now, but not as user. It did work as user, and I have not changed anything that I know of. [SLE] Packet logging software? and Netscape takes a long time to start...

I have my Netscape set to start from http://localhost, which in turn goes to my Apache httpd/htdocs/index.html webpage, however when I call up Netscape is takes about 45 seconds to bring up the webpage. Now that I have wvdial.dod installed, it still takes 45 seconds *and* wvdial connects to my webserver, even though it shouldn't be even connecting to the internet at this point. I have my Primary and Secondary DNS servers set to my ISP DNS machines. What is the solution for this? I have an idea that it might be my DNS settings, but I'd like confirmation before I go mucking with my machines. If I have to change either Primary or Secondary DNS, what should my preferred settings be for a standard dial-up machine. Also, I have SuSE 6.4 and wvdial.dod is not shutting down my PPP connection after a timeout of 180 seconds. Someone had previously mentioned to me that I should log the packets being sent and received during those 180 seconds to determine what process was running. What software on the SuSE CDs should I run to do this logging? I installed Firewal from the /sec section of YAST, but the only logging I have in /var/log/firewall so far is the PPP connection going up and down. I have enabled *_all logging from within rc.config. Do you happen to know what type the partitions were originally? The standard DOS (fat16) is type 6, but there is also a type e that fdisk reports to be Win95 FAT16 (LBA). I don't know if it is significant but maybe there is a problem there. My understanding of W95 long file names (on fat16 anyway) is that there is a standard 8.3 file name and the remainder of the file name is contained in extra directory entries with a link between the two (I think OS/2 kept these and other extended attributes in a separate file). The extra entries/links can get lost fairly easily which is why you don't want to run old utilities on these partitions, defrag from dos 6.22 for example. Perhaps something similiar has happened? What did you use to do the reformat? I, like many, use fetchmail to deliver to my local MTA which is sendmail. It seems as if fetchmail will use the Sender: header as the sender envelope to deliver messages if available. Unfortunately, it seems like qmail is creating this Sender: header from the local machine which may not be a resolvable name as far as DNS is concerned. I have sendmail setup in the default way which rejects unresolvable sender envelopes. This Sender: header causes the message to bounce, but since the sender is not resolvable, the bounce fails and it gets delivered to postmaster locally, missing the body of the message. I'm seeing a lot of these bounces from various lists, but mostly from this list. And as far as I can remember, all were sent via qmail. So I'm assuming this Sender: header is set by qmail. Does anyone know if there is a setting in qmail that controls what the Sender: header is? [SLE] questions with kernel 2.2.15 and other

Hello everyone, I have a couple of questions 1)I have downloaded the kernel for 2.2.15 from the kernel.org mirrors. After applying the Phillip Thomas's adjustment to the Makefile using the susewmif kernel en command I compiled and installed the kernel. >From time to time (meaning it does not happen every time) when I want to use 2.2.14 Suse kernel the PC starts loading everything but stops when it comes to the point where it prints the message. Setting the CMOS Clock I checked the /etc/rc.d/init.d/boot file to understand what it tries to do. AFAIU it just checks if via YAST I have asked for GMT time setup. Well the answer is no I have not asked for GMT. But this only happens randomly if I what to boot with 2.2.14, it was not doing that when I only had 2.2.14 as the kernel. Any ideas what might be going wrong ? 2) Under the 2.2.15 source tree there are files for USB however when trying the configure the kernel I never see the option for USB devices hence the usb modules do not compile. While searching for USB pacthes I found one but this one is backported for 2.2.14 (although it says could be used with 2.2.15 but did not make sense when I already have the files) Any ideas how to get the USB working for 2.2.15 3) After installing Netscape 4.73 128 bit (downloaded from netscape) I have the following error message ERROR: /opt/netscape/plugins/cpPack1.jar.old: invalid ELF head Cant load plugin /opt/netscape/plugins/cpPack1.jar.old. Ignored Yet Netscape looks like its working fine (Maybe I did not come to a web site where this would create a problem) Any idea in fixing this ? I'm using Kernel 2.4.0-test1 on a non-critical system only. If people didn't try it, then the bugs wouldn't get ironed out. I had only the 1 problem with it - and that was the pppd daemon dialling problem. Updated and everything is fine. In fact, I'm just about to upgrade my ReiserFS to 3.6.6 as I applied the 2.3.99 beta Reiser 3.6.6 patch to this kernel and even that is working fine! :) No hacking as such required. I would only recommend installing Kernel 2.4 at the moment if you really wanted to try the new features - but I wouldn't depend on it as Keith says. Hi, Anybody doing videoconferencing exclusively w/ Linux? If so, what program and video camera are you using? My objective is to talk and see family back in Portugal. Are there alternatives?
