[SLE] Question about security

Hi everyone, Last night while just looking to the /var/log/messages I have noticed that some one has fingered me and started an ftp action the following were logged home in.fingerd connect from bla bla home in.ftpd connect from bla bla now when I saw these messages I diconnected from the internet since I wa on dial up. However I am planning to swcith to cable modem which will allow continous connection. I want to know how can I control such actions. Is it enough I commment everything in the inetd.conf or are tehre additional things I can do. I got the same problems (and a report of a friend who had no problems at all with 6.4 and CFS...strange) >> startproc /usr/sbin/cfsd || return=$rc_failed >> mount -o port=3049,intr localhost:/.cfsfs /crypt || return=$rc_failed After I accidently changed the port to 2049 this mount request worked, but /crypt is mounted with permissions 000, so this seems not to be the correct way. I think it has something to do with the Portmapper : When mounting this is syslogged : nfs: RPC call returned error 111 RPC: task of released request still queued! [SLE]A strange command in history list

PROMPT_COMMAND='pwd>&6;kill -STOP $$' Since 5.3, whenever I execute history command, I see this command in my command buffer which I didn't typed. Can anyone tell me where it might come from and what it performs if I accidentally execute it? [SLE] TV, Burners, Video Cameras

Hello list, Persuaded my oldest son to install SuSE 6.4 . Now he wants all the bells and whistles to work on his machine. (PIII 600, 64M ram, I believe). He has a Hauppage TV card (which is supported), a cd-burner (don't know), and a little video camera. I want to help him as much as possible without revealing too much of my newbie-ness (spelled ignorance). I think I've read that the burner has to be used as an SCSI device? What about the TV card, what's involved there? And the video camera? Any help would be appreciated or point me in the right direction. Make me and SuSE look good......he's 21 and working on his Doctorate already..........but he's VERY windows oriented, and I've been talking up SuSE for some time now. He's in CA so luckily he can't see me sweat! Thanks a million. [SLE] RPM question Failed dependencies

Hello all, I have been using suse 6.1 and haven't felt the need to upgrade but then I wanted to install some rpm's and I keep getting failed dependencies. libc.so.6 needed and others I checked and I have those libraries in /lib/. I have checked all over the place to find an answer. expert exchange, suse suportdb, among others. What is the deal I would rather figure out the problem than just upgrade. [SLE] gdb problems slowing developement - possible problem with glibc ?

Hi, I am having some painful problems with gdb, and any help would be really appreciated. 1) breakpoints in shared libraries: If I set breakpoints in functions which are in shared libraries, when I restart the program gdb complains with the following message: /path/to/program/to/debug: error in loading shared libraries: libXX.so.1: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory The only option I have is to disable the breakpoints, set a breakpoint at "main" and then enable the breakpoints again :-( 2) The line numbers which are being reported by gdb do not correspond with the line numbers in the source file - even though the up-to-date file is actually loaded into the debugger, the library has been compiled with the loaded file, and the compiled library has been loaded! Possibly 1) above affected this ? And some other data: system is SuSE 6.4 which means that gdb rpm gdb-4.18-81 Problem 1) occurred many months ago and I am almost sure that it was after migrating from an older version of SuSE ( 5.3 to 6.1 ), so maybe it is because of the glibc migration ?? Problem 2) only seems to have occurred since I migrated from SuSE 6.3 to 6.4. However I did have some migration problems ( e.g. the gdb version was not updated correctly ), so could anyone suggest a possible cause of the above ? [SLE] Bad idea to "pick on" a particular distribution

Please RE to the SuSE list and let the RSN folks drop by and listen or participate as they like. I took a look at this site [ http://www.RedHatIsNotLinux.org ] because it was posted to the SuSE Linux mailing list. I agree with the spirit of what you are trying to accomplish, in so much as it regards the preservation of a free GLinux. (the 'G' may be silent as in "GNOME") I believe it is a bad idea to pick on any particular distribution. I have used SuSE for two very solid years. For the most part I am happy with SuSE, and I have the feeling they are on of the truer distributions in the OSS spirit. The has it's ups and downs. I have spilt blood over HP's WJA for (Red Hat) Linux. I have had the same type of experience with Corel's WordPerfect. In the latter case Corel was willing to assist the SuSE community in using their product with reasonably good results. The danger in naming Red Hat specifically is that it threatens to polarize the overall Linux community. I agree that RH has the potential of becoming the Microsoft of GLinux. To a large extent this is not their "fault". It's not RH who demands these vendors produce RH specific products. It seems to be more a combination of the traditional, one vendor of OS's, paradigm, as well as an ignorance on the part of the hardware vendor community as regards the overall GLinux community and market. I have never used RH, but I'm sure they produce a fine distribution. In the last century the Unix industry attempted to standardize on an agreed upon framework, and ended up with a heterogeneous plethora of Unix products that tend not to provide the interoperability promised by such an agreement. I would like to see the GLinux community accomplish what the Unix vendors failed to do. I don't believe singling out RH or any other distributor as the culprit will produce the sprit of trust and cooperation required to create a truly open GLinux platform. The problem arises that the GLinux distributors need some type of market differentiate to attract customers. If companies who distribute GLinux cannot make money, they will not survive. Finding the middle ground is not easy. It becomes more difficult when we start using antagonistic tactics. I humbly suggest you change the focus of your campaign away from an opposition to RH, and toward the goal of a truly open GLinux. [SLE] IPMasq

Hello, I have finally conviced my boss that it would be a good idea to have a linux box in the office as a firewall/gateway. Now our web/e-mail hosting people have just informed us that they are going out of business and I have 3 days to get the machine running. For the moment until I have time to set up the proxy's I am going to use IPMasq. I have done this many times before but for some reason I can not get any request to the internet to work. When I run IPTraf and using my NT workstation machine to ping or telnet it shows packets going out both the internal network card and the one pointing to the world, but I can't seem to get a connection. Does anyone have any ideas about this. At the moment I am on a test network using simply ipchains -A -forward -i eth1 -j MASQ. Any help would be apreciated. Thank you, Austin P.S. [SLE] Ipchains with gfcc - any recommendations?

Here's the layout: A friend of mine, who is a NT sysadmin, although open-minded, asked me two days ago if I could replace one of his servers whith a LINUX-box that does simple IP-masquearading before Wednesday next week, i.e 2000-03-05. If not he would have to buy the third-party NAT software whose demo-license expired last week. I told him that I would give it a try, if he would rely on SuSE. I have no previous experience whith IP-chains, but I read the various related HOW-TOS and it doesn't seem impossible. I also found that SuSE 6.4 comes with the program gfcc, which seems to make IP-chains a little easier for thee beginner. If I succeed I might save a poor soul from the NT persuasion - I hope you see how important this is. Now the question: has anyone out there had any experience whith gfcc and if so fdo you have any tips or recommendations? I would be glad to just hear that it works out of the box! [SLE] extended partition

I partitioned my 13 Gig hd using Partition Magic 4.0 and installed my 3rd SuSe linux, 6.3 using yast1. SuSe is by far the best distribution. I have only a few questions: 1. I get this message when I use fdisk: The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 1653. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) /dev/hda2 is my /boot and it is below the 1024 boundary so I don't think I have a problem. ================================================= 2. as shown below, /dev/hda4 is a Win95 Ext'd (LBA) I installed SuSe with no problems. Being a Win95 extended partition, could this cause a problem and should I change it to a linux extended using linux fdisk. I read in this group that you should't mix PM and fdisk.
