If I understand lilo correctly, it looks for the kernel at a very specific position on the disk, if it has changed, lilo gets lost. (Or I could be wrong and its a different problem, no matter). Try booting your system as you describe with the install floppys and use Yast to create a boot floppy. See if that floppy will boot. I seem to remember that you can also recompile your kernel using # make bzdisk (instead of bzImage or bzlilo) I think that's right, double check the docs to be sure as I don't have access to a linux box right now (again I could be wrong). If you can get to a bootable system floppy, you're halfway there. [SLE] Soundblaster problems

Hello, I have a Soundblaster AWE64 and I am trying to run it with suse 6.3. Aparently suse is trying to use irq 7 instead of 5 as the card is set to do. I get choppy sound and the console is telling me that there is an irq conflict with irq 7. I have run pnpdump > isapnp.conf and selected the ?correct? configuration for the card in isapnp.conf. [SLE] Problem with Netscape preferences

Hello: I have a really annoying problem that I've been unable to solve with my limited knowledge of linux and Netscape; one that I don't recall ever having seen discussed here before: I recently tried to access my Netscape email on my Win95 disk while running under linux (SuSE 6.0). To do so I mounted the Win 95 disk (hda1) and then selected the Netscape mail directory on that drive by editing the linux Netscape's (v4.5 that came with SuSE 6.0) preferences through the edit menu. For whatever reason that didn't work, so I rebooted under Win95 searched for the information I needed, then went back to linux. When I reloaded Netscape, under linux, I got an error message saying something to the effect that the inbox requested wasn't available and I would be unable to receive new messages. Netscape never did load. I then went to the /home/user/.netscape file and deleted the lock file; then edited the /home/user/.netscape/preferences.js file to change the default mail directory from the Win95 Netscape mail file that was listed there to /home/user/nsmail/ . When that was done Netscape loaded up just fine and I had access to my Netscape mail files as usual. The problem now is that every time I exit the Xwindow system and KDE (my default X window interface, usually when I shut down the machine, and then start the X window system & KDE again my /home/user/.netscape/preferences.js file has been rewritten to so that the default mail directory is the Win95 Netscape mail directory again. This happens even though I also go back and edit Netscape preferences after I get into Netscape. The problem does not happen if I simply close Netscape and open it again without leaving X window system. This suggests to me that the problem is not with Netscape per se, but with another configuration file such as /etc/X86config (which I have checked to no avail). I have looked in every configuration file I can locate in /opt/netscape, /etc, and any other place I could think of to look for configuration files to find out where the path to the Win95 Netscape mail file might be stored, but have not been able to find it. Can anybody out there suggest anyplace else to look? Or any way to ensure that when I edit the mail path from the Netscape preferences menu it will stay changed? It's really annoying to have to go in and edit preferences.js file everytime I turn on my computer and go to check my email. Thanks for your help. George -- George H. Griffin Powered by SuSE Linux. Hello, Something is not right with my xfs setup. I can't list my Type1 fonts. If I can figure out what's wrong here with xfs, then I think I can fix my TrueType problem. By the way, after doing this stuff at the console, NetScape won't open, and KDE won't shutdown. [SLE] bash: (whatever): command not found

After upgrading from 6.1 to 6.3, I see this message a lot, whether I'm attempting to run a command under my normal id or as root. No, I don't have the local directory included in my path, and my path (from echo $PATH) looks the same as one from a machine where this problem is not occuring. Even trying sh (command) doesn't work. Any ideas? [SLE] Problem with yast, passwd and user accounts

Greetings, I have inherited a SuSE 6.2 box with some interesting account/password problems. When I add a user using YaST the new user is always given a user ID of 509. When I try to change the pasword using passwd or YaST I am told the new user does not exist or in YaST the fields do no populate as expected. Existing users populate properly and I can change their passwords using passwd with no problem. It appears that the previous administrator deleted some entries directly fom /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd. The only thing I noticed strange in shadow and passwd were entries in each that were old users that were no longer needed. I thought that mabey these inconsistencies were the problem, so I deleted these unnecessary entries. This was not the problem. /shadow and passwd now agree on the accounts and users that should be on the machine, I can change passwords on existing accounts, and I can add new users. However as I said, I cannot edit the accounts using YaST or passwd At this point I have no reason to suspect the system to have been compromised, but... I've downloaded some tutorials that have .ps extensions. The program that kde invokes to read these files (KGhostview) displays only the first page of the documents.
