[SLE] Console to Cisco router and firewall

I need to talk to my office's Cisco router and Pix firewall, the vendor told me to use hyper terminal in NT/9x which the whole cabinet of servers are all SuSE Linux. : ) Can someone point me to the right way to get it work? I tried minicom, etc but they are don't care about (the cisco things). Help and thanks. Dennis @Singapore.

The swap driver was coded to only handle 128M as maximum swap space on any one swap device. That's my guess ! What I was trying to say is that if you need 512MB swap space, on a machine with 256MB memory, and you are heavily swapping, it is probably a good sign your machine is under-spec'ed, at least on Linux. This would have to be looked at differently on other systems, such as FreeBSD which has a completely different (and in my view much better) swapping philosophy. Ask Linus ! Cliff

Huge or not... as you imply, this argument has probably gone on since the VAX introduced virtual memory... Anyway, my point is that even as RAM has become so cheap that it is not totally out-of-the question to implement the entire 32-bit memory space of a modern PC in RAM, and thus entirely do away with swap (at least if you disregard the multitasking factor), CPUs are moving towards 64-bit memory space and I do definitely believe that we in a few years time will regard multiple GB RAM as commonplace. This will *not* eliminate the need for swap space, only create demand for even greater virtual memory. Today, memory demands above 512MB is nothing fancy, and if you happen to follow the SuSE-linux-on-Alphas discussion, you'll notice that a lot of people already employ Linux on machines with several GB RAM and their disk space is staggering (to us stuck on PCs, that is), and they have applications making good use of it, too! (I am able to right to it as root just fine) Created directory /muzak Mount /dev/hdd1 /muzak (this is the 2nd physical harddrive) Net use m: \\lunacy\muzak (from my Win2k boxen) Connected fine At this point I cannot write (but I can view fine) to this directory from account ancalagon (which is in the root group) I attempt to change permissions to allow write access to group Seems everything works alright I check permissions again to make sure and they have reverted to NOT allowing the root group to write This is where I am at now, and I really don't know where to go from here. On DC's suggestion, I tried this with the second drive being partitioned as EXT2 (was trying fat32). This is my first attempt at having 2 physical drives in Linux, so keep that in mind. Do I have to set a "global" write permission somewhere? I am grasping at straws here... Thanks! CK

On reboot I get a message 'unable to handle kernel paging address' followed by a screen of assorted numbers. I mounted (via rescue system) and re-ran lilo. This made no difference. It now seems as if /boot is empty!. I tried to reinstall, recreated my partition setup via yast but as soon as I get to the 'mounting filesystems' bit the machine reboots and I am back where I started. How can I force the recreation of /boot? Many thanks in hope Francesco
