HI, yesterday an win98 (in vmware) crashed. On reboot I get a message 'unable to handle kernel paging address' followed by a screen of assorted numbers. I mounted (via rescue system) and re-ran lilo. This made no difference. It now seems as if /boot is empty!. I tried to reinstall, recreated my partition setup via yast but as soon as I get to the 'mounting filesystems' bit the machine reboots and I am back where I started. How can I force the recreation of /boot?
Many thanks in hope
Francesco

You need to find a way to run Linux fdisk, and clear your partitions before trying to reinstall. I don't know just what happens, but I have run into this problem--I think it was when trying to install a SuSE distro where there had been a Mandrake. If you have an early distro with the manual (text-based) install, just run that install until you get to the fdisk section, clear everything out and save, then exit and run the suse install and it should work. Good Luck! --doug

Hi again,
I only have 6.2 and 7. I tried rearranging the partition table (keeping well away from where my data is) but still get stonewalled. Has anyone got any further suggestions? Can I clean it up via the rescue system? Desperate now.
Thanks
Francesco

I ran fdisk and deleted hda1,2 & 3 (leaving 4 which is /, which contains /home) then with yast1 recreated them and hey presto - dame problem - an automatic reboot before I get to go any furthern (yast2 gets as far as asking for names and passwords before it does it's reboot). Am trying _not_ to lose hda4 as some of the stuff represents a lot of work.
Since you've already gone some way to reinstalling, this is my suggestion. When you get the LILO prompt for the SuSE installation, type 'manual init=S' - this will mean that when you boot the installed system, it will go into the single user runlevel. Use the YaST option 'boot installed system' to boot the system. When this is done, create a new /home partition towards the start of the disk with fdisk (take this opportunity to create a new partitioning scheme, with a separate /home partition), format it and mount it as /newhome. Then copy the current contents of /home over into /newhome (as well as any configuration files you may want to keep - in fact anything that you feel you need to transfer to your new install - you may even want the whole of /etc...). Once this is done, you're free to vape the / partition and reinstall. If you need any more details, let me know.

Unfortunately the installed system will no longer boot. My data is intact (can mount /dev/hda4 through the rescue system). Cannot mount /fd0 though as 'special device does not exist'. My problem now is that cannot get a bootable system and at same time cannot install without formatting hda (which want to avoid until have salvaged some of /dev/hda4/home/fgs). WHere to now?
Use a YaST install to go as far as partitioning your hard drive, and create that single /home partition I mentioned earlier (or a /boot partition in front of it as well if you want). When you've moved onto the next YaST dialog box, switch to another console and find a bash prompt (Alt-F3 I think). Format the new /home partition. Assuming the new partition is /dev/hda2 (it may not be), use the command 'mke2fs /dev/hda2'. Then you can use that same shell to create a mount point and mount the partition. Then you can copy your files over as before. Isn't it amazing that Windows can cause so much trouble even when you're running Linux...
