[SLE] How to run M$ Office applications on Linux box over network?

Hello Linux folks! I have to use some M$ Office applications for my job. I know that I can run them under Linux using emulators like vine or vmware. But for this task I must create FAT32 partition and install Winblows with all needed M$ applications on my Linux server HD. I don't want to do that. Is there any possibility tor run Winblows applications installed on pure Winblows box under Linux over network. Kind of idea of Winblows application server. Any your help or suggestions are gladly appreciated. Thanks. [SLE] How does one mount a ZIP drive?

I have an Iomega 100MB ZIP drive connected to my parallel port, and my printer is connected to the Zip drive. I think I have made the necessary entries in modules.conf (alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc, and options parport_pc io=0x378, 0x278 irq=7, none), and I have loaded imm (modprobe imm), but I don't know how to mount the drive itself, since I don't know what its device designation is. Can someone please help me? Thanks very much. [SLE] Solution: K-Menu display error

Hello, Just found a solution to the K-Menu display bug: If there are too many program entries to display and they don't fit in a single column, the menu will roll over to the next column and the following entries will be displayed... ..unless the .directory file has "SortOrder" defined. If the option "SortOrder" is used, the menu will not roll over to the next column but will run off off the bottom of the screen, making the bottom entries inaccessible. So to fix the rollover behaviour, remove the SortOrder line. A small oneliner to do this is: find /opt/kde -name .directory -exec perl -pi.save -e 's/^SortOrder.*$//' {} \; Cheers Koos Pol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S.C. [SLE] What's on ports 1015 & 1016?

Few minutes ago I was being port scanned on these two ports in a rapid succession, although both TCP wrappers and portsentry took care of business, I would like to know what are these two ports. I could not find any reference to them. [SLE] kdat unreliable

Maybe it's jus me, but I have a dat drive and I'm trying to make regular backups of my system. I thought it would be nice to use kdat because of the interface but it seems to be very unreliable. It apears to use tar to do the backup, but when I do a restore test on single files I can't seem to extract them using tar. Am I the only one with this problem? I have a shel script written by a friend that does great backups and I'm thinking of rewriting it and using it. Is it needed? [SLE] Tar and CDR/CDRW

I'm used to dump-ing and tar-ing to drives, mostly tape drives but it also works to a regular hard drive and most any block device. Is there a way to do the same sort of thing to a CDR? I have a vfat partition (mounted via fstab with default options) that I want to allow all user accounts to be able to write to. The mount point (/dos) that it is mounted under is owned by root with rx permission for group and other. No matter how I (as root) try to chmod this directory and all of its subdirectories to +w for all users (for eg. chmod -R a+w /dos), it just will not change from it's default permissions. Enlightenment about text files... DOS (Win xx, OS/2, and compatable OS's) all have both the line feed (LF, ANSI character 10, 0Ah) and the cartrage return (CR, ANSI character 13, 0Dh) to denote the end of a line in a text file. Macs only have the CR, and Unix only has the LF. Why? Same reason does uses the back slash and Unix the forward.slash. What to do about it? One way of dealing with it to FTP the files correctly. There is both a binary mode and an ASCII mode to trasfer files. What is the difference, you might ask... The binary mode trasfers the file EXACTLY as it is from one box to another, which is what you normally want, but... The ASCII mode will do things like convert the CRLF to simply LF if the file is going from a DOS system to a Unix system, and from simply LF to CRLF if going from Unix to DOS. The program that does the such a conversion is very simple to write, I am sure there is a utility in Linux to do that for you. One a Sun Sparc station it is dos2unix, and I would guess unix2dos. There are some "smart" editors, one of them that I like very much in the DOS world is Boxer (http://www.boxersoftware.com/), that will read in a text file from DOS, Mac, or Unix and allow you to save in any of the three formats. I would not be surprized if there are also some Linux editors that can do the same, again it is a very simply process. Sam P.S. Hello, I want to explode the file tkhylafax_3.2-1.tar.gz so I type tar xzf tkhylafax_3.2-1.tar.gz I get the messages gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file tar: Unexpected EOF on archive file tar: Child returned status 1 tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors What am I doing wrong?
