Do you think Pentium II 400 Mzh with 128 M Ram and a 64k Lease line can handle it ? Does SUSE 6.2 come with other mail system ? [SLE] Help with SCSI module loading.

I'm having trouble understanding the correct use of modules with my 6.2 system. I have an IDE-based system which works fine with the default kernel; it boots off the internal IDE drive, mounts the ATAPI CDROM, etc. Life is good. What I'm trying to do is to add two external SCSI CD-changers connected to an Adaptec 7940 controller. These changers are installed as IDs 3 and 4, and respond to LUN 1-7 to access the different disks. My situation thus far is that I can load the aic7xxx module manually with the modprobe command. I put entries in fstab for /dev/scd0-13, referencing names /cd1/1, /cd1/2,.../cd2/1... I created corresponding directories for the mount points. I can then mount the cds manually, and access the data on each with no problem. What I *can't* do is figure out how to load the module automatically. If I put an entry in conf.modules, and reboot, it doesn't get loaded. I get the "scsi : 0 hosts" and "scsi : detected total" messages. I'm not sure what the proper alias is, but nothing seems to work. Conf.modules had an entry "alias scsi_hostadapter no" in it; neither remarking it out nor changing the "no" to "aic7xxx" made any difference. When I load the module manually, the warn log references a scsi0 device that the CDs are attached to; I don't know where that name came from, but using it as an alias in conf.modules doesn't get the job done, either. Using an append=aic7xxx LILO parameter doesn't work, and that doesn't seem to be the correct approach, anyway. Likewise, changing the kernel to the Adaptec one shouldn't be correct, and isn't as the system fails to boot (logically, since there's no boot device attached to the Adaptec). I've now officially run out of talent. I suspect that there is some additional work required to cause a module to be auto-loaded at startup, other than creating the conf.modules entry. Or, I have the format incorrect. I don't think this is a problem with the Adaptec BIOS not loading and needing to be forced, since it has no problem being detected with a manual load. Thoughts?? I'm out in the sticks where I'm not in a position to pick up discards from folks down the hall, so I probably will have to actually spend money on a M$ os :( I do need the Y2K compliance, though other than setting the system clock, I don't know how a non-compliant os could mess up my app. I need access to the M$ end of things from the SuSE side almost exclusively; very occasionally will I move data to the M$ side, and I can live with 8.3 filename limits for these files. I'd never try to print anything from the M$ side, etc. FWIW, the app receives realtime market data and displays it. I want to get to that data from SuSE, both to develop my own replacement for the M$ app, and for various manipulations of the data. Occasionally (once a quarter) the results of the manipulations get imported back into the app's world. The app uses a virtual device driver to verify its dongle, so wabi/wine are out of the question. People seem to run this app in everything from Win3.10 to NT without problems, but as far as I know, I'm the only one in the world that wants to connect it to a Linux network. Sounds like I should spring for Win95b. [SLE] Aliased IP interface not working

Running SuSE 6.3 (2.2.13 kernel.) The machine in question is our gateway machine. Our Internet connection is via eth0; a private intranet is on eth1, with the gateway providing Internet access for the intranet via masquerading. We have two IP addresses on the Internet. One is on eth0, the other on eth0:0. This used to work just fine. Now, however, TCP connections (e.g.: SMTP) to the aliased interface from the Internet fail. Connections from the intranet work fine. Also, eth0:0 can be pinged from the Internet. Now, if I switch the IP addresses around, so that the IP address from the alias interface is now on the "real" interface and vice versa, both IP addresses are available for SMTP connections. They ifconfig eth0:0 down ifconfig eth0 down ifconfig eth0 12.15.47.122 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 12.15.47.255 ifconfig eth0 12.15.47.121 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 12.15.47.255 route add default gw 12.15.47.120 Using 'route add -host ...' doesn't help. Hi all, A buddy just got a system with allot of USB stuff. He talks about using Linux, but says he has to have Win98 for USB. Does Linux support USB yet? Or what parts of USB does Linux support?
