K6-II, i686

Hi, I recompiled my kernal about 2 weeks ago and have been meaning to ask this: When it asks what chip I have, what whould I pick if I have a K6-II? I think I picked P5/Normal Pentium. Shoule I have picked PII? I hear that it doesn't really make a difference because the code isn't enhanced for the newer chips, is that right? Any/all Help is appreciated. James bond225(a)tiac.net

what to do with .rpm files

If I download a program in .rpm format, how do I install it? When I tried to install it with YaST, I got an error that /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc does not exist; it in fact does not exist (the /usr/lib/rpm directory doesn't exist). I do have a copy of the rpm binary in /home/eckles/.kde/share/bin/, but when I try to run it I get the same error. XF86 configuration

I'm getting really frustrated here. The SuSE 6.1 install via NFS worked great. But now I can't get my X server working. I've used sax and XF86Setup and after going through the procedures umpteen times trying different servers, cards, etc, I keep getting the same response when I type "startx", namely: Fatal Server error No valid modes found. I have been everywhere on the web I can think of: google, LDP, personal sites, manufacturer's sites, etc. to no avail. I've been over the XF86Config file with a fine-toothed comb and I can't figure out why it can't find any valid modes! I've searched on the error message, but there doesn't seem to be an answer that applies to me (case-sensitivity, Trident cards, etc.). The card information (both from the web and SuperProbe) is a WD 90C24 with 512K SVGA. The monitor is an LCD screen that will support VGA (I don't know what color depth it will work at, but that Other Operating System that came on the HD looked damn colorful!) Now what?

Does anyone know of a site or sites where I might be able to download an ISO image of RH6.0 and the newest Debian distro? Just want to check them out. On the other hand, even selecting the Banshee driver didn't do me any good. The SaX included in my copy of 6.1 reported that the chipset was still not supported. You need to run something like xf86config (command-line tool) and give it some bogus settings. This will make most of the necessary links for you. Install the xbanshee RPM from your disks, and `ln -s /usr/X11/bin/XFCom_Banshee /var/X11/bin/X'. True type fonts

Ok all this talk about true type fonts and I want them. I'm looking for the difinitave answer. . .what is the best way to get them in KDE and Netscape. Do I need xfstt or is there a better solution?? If so where do I get it or what do I do? I've been looking since I read all this but I can't find it. wvdial question

I recently installed SuSE linux 6.1 and I'm trying to get ppp to work. So far I have everything working and when I type wvdial at a prompt I can use various internet services. My question concerns disconnecting. I read the man pages for wvdial and there is nothing there. There are no options suchs as wvdial -d to disconnect. Right now the only way I know is to kill the program but this does not hang up my modem correctly. Any help would be appreciated. There is one other question I had that someone might be able to explain. When you view permissions for a file sometimes you see s instead of x under the execute column. What does the s mean? I read the man pages for chmod but I couldn't really understand what they were talking about. Also, can you set s for all users? I tried but it didn't work. Thanks, Avery Fay

Binary

Is there any way to send a binary file, either as attachment or otherwise just readable, in a script? the mail command send it but its garbage once you receive it. Thanks Jeff
